iMore Picks of the Week for April 14, 2012
Calendar16 Sat, 14 Apr 2012 22:35:42 UTC +00:00
Every week the editors at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week’s selections include apps a beautiful iPad weather app, apps for sports and politics, a fun camera app, an app filled with inspirations, a puzzle game, a music app, and an alternative to Instagram. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! It’s been a crazy week, so I’m going simple with my pick – simple and beautiful. Leanna reviewed a weather app called Living Earth recently and after reading her post, my need to see just how great this app really was took over immediately and I downloaded it. You might find a weather app that does more or has more geeky weather options for meteorology nerds, but with the possible exception of Weather HD, I’ve yet to see a Read More
TiPb Picks of the Week for October 8, 2011
Calendar16 Sat, 08 Oct 2011 18:09:39 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Saturday, Oct 8, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! I thought about what I wanted to talk about for this week’s pick, and I decided to take a step back and look more at the bigger picture than a single application. I thought about how profoundly my day-to-day life has changed and about influences in the past few years at Nickelfish, and no week seemed more appropriate than this one to recognize the massive change the iPhone brought to users. I’ve been a fan Read More

This week Rene talks with Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns. What’s your name? Mike Smithwick What’s your company’s name? First Light Design, LLC, I was hoping to name it something like “Apple,” I know, dumb name, but someone already had it. Where are you located? San Jose, CA. What’s your website address? www.distantsuns.com What’s your Twitter name? @distantsuns for any hot breaking news about, uh, Distant Suns (duh!). Apps to Track Hurricane Irene
Calendar16 Fri, 26 Aug 2011 14:56:35 UTC +00:00
As Hurricane Irene makes its way up the East Coast, you may be tempted to hunker by the TV or computer with your three-day supply of batteries, water and MREs to track the storm’s progress. But you can feel free to go out and test the tensile strength of your umbrella thanks to a number of phone and iPad apps that will keep you current on Irene’s position. At the top of the list has to be Hurricane Express, a recently released 99-cent iPhone app specializing in – what else? – hurricane tracking. With information from the National Hurricane Center, the app provides lots of raw data for wonky storm chasers, but also moving radar maps, maps showing the forecasted storm track, wind maps and others as well. You can also check the curated Twitter feed from weather organizations and weather pros, or check the news feed with bulletins and videos. Read More
iOS 5 weather app to include hourly forecasts
Calendar16 Thu, 16 Jun 2011 15:30:00 UTC +00:00
The weather app in iOS 5 has a new feature that lets you view the hourly forecast of the current day with a simple swipe of your finger. It's a minor improvement that doesn't compare with full-featured apps like Weather HD or Weather Bug Elite. But still, it's a nice touch for those that prefer the simplicity of the built-in app. Read More
App Showdown: Weather Apps
Calendar16 Wed, 01 Jun 2011 17:38:28 UTC +00:00
Posted 06/01/2011 at 9:38am | by J Keirn-Swanson With all the crazy weather we’ve been having lately all across the country, you might want to think about upgrading from Apple’s pretty bare bones weather app to something with a little more umph to it. But where to start? The App Store is choked with weather apps, but the basics are pretty much a given. You want to know the temperature, what the weather will be like today, and a forecast into the near future. Is that too much to ask? Let’s find out.   Perhaps realizing that after you’ve covered the basics, there really isn’t much more to do, ITWC, the makers of Weather+ decided that pretty was the way to go. So they souped up their universal app with gorgeous weather-related backgrounds. Of course, there’s plenty besides pretty. Once you’ve inputted your location, Weather HD grabs the local time and Read More
There was a time when taking an electronic device with you on an adventure holiday would have been seen as sacrilege, as how would it be an adventure if you had that level of assistance?  Thankfully, we think things have changed, and your smartphone is seen as not only an essential safety tool, but something which can enhance your adventure too! If you’re planning an adventure this year, here are ten hints and tips about what to equip your iPhone with before you go. 1.  A Really Tough Case. If you’re going to be using your iPhone 4 in harsh environments, it’s going to need to be well protected.  There are several super-tough cases available for the iPhone, and we’ve previously reviewed the Ballistic HC for the iPhone 4 and the Otterbox for the 3G, and both are seriously hard wearing, sealed units able to withstand proper shocks. 2.  An Extended Read More
Ooo, QuickWeather for iPhone!
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Feb 2011 21:24:26 UTC +00:00
There isn’t too much to say about this app aside from the fact that it looks incredible and features one of the cleanest weather presentations I’ve seen in an app thus far. I’ll probably continue to use LockInfo 3.0 (jailbreak only) for my weather forecasts, but if you’ve been looking for a weather app that practically doubles as a screensaver, check this one out (and if you do, please let us know about the speed — WeatherHD took forever to load on my 3GS). How the iPad Is Influencing Web Apps
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Dec 2010 20:42:30 UTC +00:00
The Web Development Series is supported by Rackspace, the better way to do hosting. Learn more about Rackspace’s hosting solutions here. Google officially unveiled its Chrome Web Store yesterday, and with it, a veritable treasure trove of highly optimized web apps that use technologies like JavaScript and HTML5 to create optimized experiences that blur the lines between web and desktop apps. We’ve already profiled some of those apps, most of which work on any modern browser, not just Google Chrome. A few months ago, we talked about how the iPad is transforming web design. We dubbed this phenomenon the “iPadification of the web.” As much as the iPad has had an influence on web design, its influence over this next wave of web applications is even more apparent. Looking through the Google Web Store, we couldn’t help but notice the similarities — in some cases perfect facsimiles — that some of Read More

Weather HD Now Runs on the iPhone Too
Calendar16 Wed, 06 Oct 2010 18:03:29 UTC +00:00
Weather HD – the most gorgeous of weather apps – was updated to become a universal app last week – so it now runs on the iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the iPad (where it started out). This app is not one that will offer you a deep look at current and future conditions, or an array of choices for weather maps. It offers just fairly basic weather information, but does so with great style. It’s been my favorite weather app on the iPad since the first day I spotted it. If you’re after a simple and beautiful weather app for your iOS devices, Weather HD is well worth a look. You can find it in the App Store now, priced at $0.99. Read More

Estimate: Top 1000 iPad apps making $372k a day
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Apr 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Here's an interesting look at just how big the iPad app market might be. Vimov, the makers of Weather HD, have used their own sales numbers to put together an analysis of what the top 1,000 iPad apps on the App Store are pulling in, and they've come up with a series of estimated sales for each position in the top 100. By their reasoning, the top paid app in the store sells about 5k copies per day, with the number two app selling about 3k, the number three app about 2.5k, and so on. Vimov estimates that everyone in the top 100 list, when you add them all together, is making about US$304,058 on any given day. The shelf drops off from there -- in the top 1000, developers are making about $372,000, and past that, they're obviously making less. So, what does this all mean? First, these are obviously Read More
Weather HD
Calendar16 Sun, 04 Apr 2010 02:20:25 UTC +00:00
The iPad is noticeably lacking a weather application in it's arsenal of remade apps. This is a large disappointment for most users because the weather app definitely needed an overhaul. Weather HD is an app trying to fill that void by bringing users the forecast and some amazing graphics for the iPad. The app allows a user to input a city they are interested in and then receive the weather for that area. Each time the weather is retrieved, the app plays a video depicting the atmosphere and conditions. Each video is absolutely stunning with some extremely artistic pictures of the current weather in the area. The app will also provide a weekly forecast for the chosen city and tapping on the various days will change the video to reflect the predicted weather on that day. The app doesn't really provide much more than an experience though. There are no weather Read More

Disponible: App Store Precio: 0,79€ Read More

Beautiful

Yes, just beautiful. Get this app just for getting to show off how pretty your iPad is to your friends. My one request, if I may, is that the song that is in the trailer be able to cue up during the playing of the weather. Very enjoyable for a dollar. Also, yay, first review!
Most beautiful app i have ever seen
money777 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Truly the iPad is a revolution i was almost brought to tears at how stunningly beautiful this app isa must buy and only 99 cents.

Amazing
StrypeMZ 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This app is the perfect weather companion for anyone who appreciates a visual representation of the current weather and future weather conditions. The video conditions are absolutely stunning, and run seamlessly. The location database is expansive, finding the secluded hometown where i live, that the weather channel and NOAA cannot find. If you are going to spend a mere $.99 on anything, spend it on Weather HD. You will not be disappointed with your purchase. The developers also respond to your suggestions promptly, and consider everything you have to say.
It's amazing and beautiful
Dracont 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Simply one of the most beautiful apps for iPad that says all it's worth the price if you are in love with the iPad as much as me.
Really Beautiful
frubio2012 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This app is worth the $0.99. It is stunning, beautiful, and just a good program overall. This app really takes advantage of the screen and the colors.
Review from st1ckyn1ck3l
richtannehill 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This app is beautiful, I find myself putting in random locations just to see the different weather animations. The developers have a winner on their hands. Definitely recommend checking this one out!
Don't waste your money
abacus01 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Bought this based on reviewss. Cool animations but nothing as far as content. Basic 4 day forecast and that's it. This should be a free app. Save your money.
Beautiful
colddragonvn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I really like the app. Developers really care about their customers too! Good job.
Excellent
bautsch 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3

Europa2010 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Awesome app for some eye candy. Keep the awesome animations coming!
Improved!
Mike88 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Very responsive developer. Immediate response to my complaint that my city wasn't listed an an update 2 days later. Now the app is exactly what it says it is. It's a beautiful, simple weather app.
Slow
McPatriot 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Searching for cities is slow, and some don't seem to appear at all.
Not working
nate05032009 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app looks good but it doesn't work that well. It can't even find my city / state or by zip code either. The eyecandy make it looks good that's all. Save your .99 cents and buy Wendy's 5 pieces of chicken nugget. This app is worthless. I will go back to the Weather Channel apps for the iPhone or wait until more iPad apps are release and buy. This app is so simple yet it takes 70 MB and i know the reason why. The special graphics is the reason why. Save your money and valuable space if you don't have that much on your iPad. I got a 64GB WIFI so i can spare this piece of crap on my iPad until i find a better one. I will try to go back and attempt to get it to find my city.
Great visuals
Wookets 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's bright and sunny here but the app says it's partly cloudy. Hmm. Not a great start. I favor more radar based weather apps, but the visuals are great for a 'is it raining out'. Worth the visuals don't know about the accuracy of its weather. Also they didn't have some cities on their lookup list. I wonder if the server is just a bit overloaded from day 1 launch.
Seriously? no US cities listed?
Aidden 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I pray this is a simple oversight and an update is forthcoming nice launch day fail
Very responsive dev
Morouxshi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The app works as advertised and i personally like how minimalist it is. The only problem I had was that I couldn't fin a a city and I got a reply from the dev in less than an hour notifying me that the fix was already submitted to apple. As soon as it was approved the dev let me know and asked if I has any more issues. I wish other devs took this initiative.
cool
lyomi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
can you make it fade out/in when changing cities??? now the screen just blacks out after swiping and it's a little ugly
Awesome app!!!
Luvintheipad 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This app is great!!! I was missing a great weather for my iPad and this was a great buy!
Weather Eye Candy!
tearbreak 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Unique and very visually appealing. It's definitely worth the price of the app. However, as others have already mentioned, searching for locations is slow and often fails to find what you're looking for.
WOW
DemocratCat 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of those applications that are specifically built for the iPad that are a) cheap and b) GOOD. For a 99 cent app it is pretty cool. The visual effects are pretty cool and it does heat it's supposed to do. Great iPad app.
Missing Major Cities
Too Busy 4 U 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's Ok. It would be great if you could see other major cities you are intrested in....
Pretty but...
playless13 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
...not much else. Video is pixelated. I live in Illinois and it showed me a sandy beach with waves crashing on shore.... At least return relevant location based images.
Beautiful !
sschaubach 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Thanks Amr & Osama! So, I first bought this app when I bought my iPad, and it would not find San Francisco. I sent a quick email and was immediately sent a response from tech support telling me they were sorry and a fix had been submitted. Today I got an email from them letting me know the fix was ready...I downloaded it and all is well. The pictures are amazingly nice, accurate info, too. For 99 cents it's a great app, thanks guys! Looking forward to your next app.
