By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Aug 30, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns. What’s your name? Mike Smithwick What’s your company’s name? First Light Design, LLC, I was hoping to name it something like “Apple,” I know, dumb name, but someone already had it. Where are you located? San Jose, CA. Within walking distance of Cisco (really!), Intel, eBay, and only a few miles always from the Mother Ship. What’s your website address? www.distantsuns.com What’s your Twitter name? @distantsuns for any hot breaking news about, uh, Distant Suns (duh!). And @lazyastronomer for general space and astronomy geek stuff. Why @lazyastronomer? When people ask me why I wanted to write Read More

Reviews

Nice app, could focus a little more on weather
AustinUser 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Nice app for looking at our planet and the surrounding space. I would like it if it focused a little more on the weather (given it's name). A loop of the clouds over the last 6 hours would be nice (so you can see trends). Maybe a way to turn on global weather features (such as hurricane tracks). Finally, a couple of levels of zoom on the planet would make a great app (the features just get blurry as you zoom in). Overall a nice first release. I'm hoping updates can add some of these suggestions or others.
Very Good! But not 5 stars good.

This app is releasted by the same outfit that put out one of my all time favorite apps, Grand Tour - 3D. Between that and their Distant Stars app, there was no question about download this app. Even with no reviews at the time. They're stuff is that good. And in general, this is no exception. There only a few minor changes needed to be made to go to 5 stars. One would be to be able to lock it in on home (and keep the same home, not having it move with you) and instantly zoom in on it for your own local weather. Moving the planet around to your location is a bit of pain. Also it says you can zoom in on the moon and see earth from there? When I zoomed to the moon, I only saw the moon as you would see from earth. I could move around the moon and get earth in the background. But it didn't do it instantly. Did I misunderstand this? And if so, why do I need this feature when Grand Tour will show me the exact same thing? Minor complaints. In general another very good app from these guys, that know I'll enjoy for a long time to come. Easily worth the .99 cents I paid for it.
Great app

Very cool visuals, the only thing I have issue with is that, being that I own the iPod touch (which does not have locator/GPS capability) I have to enable the automatic location finder in gen settings, or the app will not open. I normally would not have it enabled because the pop up is a pain when it doesn't work anyway. Still really like it though.
Will be fun to watch this develop

Think of this as an inspired doodle from a great programmer who needed a break from slaving over his other apps. Because the iPhone platform only has so much RAM, he has to break his weather opus into a separate app, much like the many versions of X-Plane. Mike's responsive. We've written back and forth about his new app. He's going to fix the problem with crashing at launch if Location Services are turned off, and then develop Weather Planet into something wonderful, more than a work of minimalist art slowly showing changing clouds and seasons, more than a front end to Weather Underground, the most accurate forecasts on the 'Net. I'm in because I'll enjoy receiving the updates and watching the app develop. I also enjoy supporting a one-man shop who writes so much good, serious code with a folksy bent. As current features go, this might be a three-star first release, except that the quality and complexity of the coding deserve a fourth star.
