Posted 08/11/2011 at 1:21pm | by Nik Rawlinson and Susie Ochs Believe J.J. Cale, because he knows what he’s talking about: traveling light is the only way to fly. The next time you’re tempted to overpack, remember to take half as many clothes, twice as much money, and your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. An iOS device can replace paper maps, books, and travel guides; and the information you’ll find in apps and iBooks is more timely and relevant anyway. Obviously you won’t need CDs or a portable DVD player -- or pricey hotel or in-flight pay-per-view -- to stay entertained. And by posting photos or blog updates about your vacation online, you won’t even have to send postcards. To prepare you and your electronic travel buddy to hit the road, we found the best apps, gear, and know-how to keep you connected. Travel can be tough on your iPad or Read More

Free App Friday: Strength Through Wi-Fi

Posted 02/11/2011 at 10:57am | by Florence Ion It seems like everything's got Wi-Fi these days: smartphones, tablets, weather monitors, baby monitors--even children's toys. More than we'd like to admit it, if it weren't for Wi-Fi, we might not know what's going on at all times of the day. But there are other uses for Wi-Fi than merely surfing the internet. More specifically, Wi-Fi can be used to stream movies, control your Mac and--hey!--get you on the internet when you're in a far away country. This week, we highlighted three free apps that stream movies between your Macs, let you control iTunes or Apple TV with your iOS device and find a Wi-Fi hotspot in Sweden without even connecting to the internet. Maybe you're not too interested in using an iPad or iPhone to watch video, or maybe you don't even have an iOS device to utilize in this manner. That's Read More

Wi-Fi Stumblers Getting Pulled from App Store?
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Mar 2010 14:11:16 UTC +00:00
Posted 03/04/2010 at 6:11am | by J.R. Bookwalter What do sexy apps and Wi-Fi hotspot detectors have in common? Apparently neither one of them is welcome on the App Store. The Register is reporting that Apple has started to yank Wi-Fi hotspot detecting apps -- commonly known as “stumblers” -- from the App Store, leaving developers completely in the dark as to why. “We received a very unfortunate e-mail today from Apple stating that WiFi Where has been removed from sale on the App Store for using private frameworks to access wireless information,” one developer writes. Apple has pulled various apps for using private frameworks in the past, but in this case it’s not totally clear what rule such scanning apps are breaking. Unlike the “sexy apps” which were pulled en masse recently, not all of the Wi-Fi finders have been removed -- apps which use a database of hotspots combined Read More

Reviews

Works for me
hawkster27 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm not a heavy WiFi user, but this does what I need, and you can't argue with the price. Accurately locates the WiFi locations, and lets you know which are free and which require a fee. No small consideration, since the fee-based spots, like Starbucks and McDonalds, can cost as much as $10 a month, minimum. Overpriced latte, anyone?
Re: WiFi
dhcaldwell 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
LISTEN: for those having problems: this app only requires wifi if you're a chump with a 1st generation iPhone without gps. The 1st gen iPhone, I imagine, needs the wifi to approximate your location. It works fine, wifi turned off, on EDGE on my iPhone 3G because of the gps. So stop giving the app poor reviews based on qualities you didn't bargain for (i.e., location-based services) when you bought a 1st generation iPhone.
Coupla things...
macuaig 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Helpful, but fusses with updating current location. And please add an indication on the main list whether it's a paid wifi site, rather than making us dig into each one to find out. A "$" on the first search results page would do nicely. Thanks very much!
Retarded reviews from iPod Touch owners
sdeetz 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
So many people have written reviews saying that you have to have WiFi to find a WiFi hot spot, so they think the app is useless. Hey people, have you ever heard of a device called the iPhone? It has this really cool feature where it can access the internet all the time, so this app actually does work. Many people still have a original iPhone with slower Edge data, so finding WiFi hotspots is very useful. And even if you don't have a iPhone, many people have WiFi at home, and can use this app to see if there are any hot spots in other areas where they may be traveling to. Try thinking outside of your little world next time you call something useless.
Great but 1 thing missing
Smann66 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Almost perfect if it would let you filter your "Near me" results by free or pay sites. It only lets you do this using the search feature, not the near me feature. Great App!
database lacking
the lowly peon 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
solid app, but the database it's using is out of date and too small. I look forward to the DB growing; this app will be great once it's a bit bigger
Simple change would make a useless application of value for the iPod touch
Ray's Reviews 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
How hard could it be to download the wi-fi database to the iPod touch and then make it searchable by zip code off-line? Answer: not hard. The authors could update the database next time it is connected to the network (since it is always changing). But no, that's not how this application works. Pretty useless as is.
Yo, people, if you have an IPHONE!! this app works just fine
Harmiclir 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Fired it up and it worked just fine the first time. As a free app I can't ask for much more and hope the developer will ignore the more ignorant comments and continue to improve tie useful app. Good work!
great wi-fi app, its saved me many times
MKMpanic 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
i travel a lot and this little app has proven very useful in finding wi-fi. i can't recommend it enough.
LOL retards
Bfreilich 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I agree with everyone else that thinks it's rather odd how it needs wifi to find wifi!?!?!?!?!?!!?!
Does exactly what I needed
simpliway 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was able to find a nice quiet hotspot on my trip to Vegas today. This is an awesome app! Keep in mind if you have a 3g phone you'll get the best results because of the GPS
Killer App!
MobileMan80211 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works perfect! FYI, Starbucks and barnes and Nobel are run by AT&T now instead of T-Mobile, so they are FREE! Looks like the app got it right.
Works great
fishb0ne 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very accurate for my area, the application works without any issues. I will go wardriving and contribute to the database of hotspots with my own finds
Excellent
CHollman82 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Works great. Found a couple free locations around me I didn't know of. To the idiot who said it doesn't work for touch users did you notice you can enter your location by city and state or zip code? If you don't know what city your in you have bigger problems than finding a wifi hotspot,
Great database, poor search options
caa100 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
You wont find a better database of hotspots, and it is free. Only 3 stars because the filtering could be better. Free/paid or location type (cafe, restaurant etc.) is a start. But what I want is to filter for providers I subscribe to -- any US iPhone user would want to filter for ATT sites, for example.
Works Great!
ituneslover83 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great wifi locator!
Good start
Sunneit 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Need to allow users to add wi-fi spots available and provide feedback on existing wi-fi spots. Given the fast spreading of wi-fi networks, this is perhaps the best way to improve any wi-fi finding app.
Awsome
Xamair 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works perfectly for me!
OK
KyleMHampton 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Needs to be able to find Burger King's and BWW's w/ Wi-Fi.
1 problem
b-ballhero 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
You need to be near wifi in the first place for it to be able to find spots near you.
WiFi Finder
bella2v 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
Difficult to enter a city, keeps reverting to San Francisco. Not all that useful when travelling.
Garbage
Bipo.la/r 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Complete garbage trying to use it on the road. I have to filter through results an hours drive away. Don't waste your time
Bad
FirstorLast1 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is terrible. It can't find anything. Wifinder is much better
Can't find area
Gygfjhgdbg 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
It can't find where I live so it is worthless
Great
BaubIPod 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Usef. Needs to add optiom for report new hot spots.
Pretty good
Atomic Boom 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
It helps find Internet places and the codes.
This is the worst app in the history of the universe
reviewer! 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
It is a mega triple pain for iPod touch users given that you need a wifi connection and you need to know all the zip codes to find a wifi hotspot. Don't buy this waste of iPod space. It's a goose in a burlap bag.
touch
Hhfchkksabh 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was happy to find a wi-fi locator app that I could use on my iPod touch.
to the idiots

Dear Idiots,
Ads in latest version
EdiPhone 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
Ads added to this latest version, with no warning or mention in the description. Let me pay a buck or two and take these Verizon ads (! I'm on AT&T hello!) outta my face.
