Wikipedia Foundation creates official iPhone app
Calendar16 Thu, 20 Aug 2009 19:30:00 UTC +00:00
The Wikimedia Foundation has just released a free app for accessing the web based encyclopedia right on your iPhone or iPod touch. Wikipedia Mobile [iTunes link] brings the full boatload of Wikipedia knowledge to a nicely formatted iPhone screen. In my tests, it responded quickly, and without any glitches over Wi-Fi and the 3G network. The only issues really are that there are already dozens of similar apps available for the iPhone. In fact, if you go to the Wikipedia site in Safari things are nicely optimized for the iPhone screen. Of course the app has a built in history button, but Safari does too. Some of the other Wikipedia apps I've tried are Wikipanion [iTunes link], which has more features, including changing the font size, and Wikiamo [iTunes link] that allows landscape view, reading of saved material offline, and links to other languages. I'd like to see the ability to Read More
Wikipedia Lauches Official iPhone App
Calendar16 Tue, 18 Aug 2009 19:41:59 UTC +00:00
The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the popular Wikipedia, just released its first official iPhone application for Wikipedia. Wikipedia Mobile, which is available for free in the App Store now (iTunes link), gives users access to iPhone-formatted Wikipedia articles. The truth, however, is that this isn't a very good application and doesn't really go beyond anything the regular mobile Wikipedia website doesn't already do. Indeed, the app is basically just a wrapper for the mobile Wikipedia site. There are already a number of very good Wikipedia apps out there, including Taptu's Wapedia (iTunes link), Wikiamo (iTunes link) and Wikipanion (iTunes link). The official Wikipedia app doesn't add anything new here. While other apps at least include features like the ability to easily browse tables of content for apps and include in-page searching or the ability to save posts for offline reading, the official Wikipedia app doesn't feature any of these Read More

Nearly perfect

This is a great application for reading Wikipedia articles. It's faster than loading the entire webpage and it formats the content for your iPhone/iPod Touch screen (no need to zoom/pinch the screen or anything like that). It's got pretty much all the features that other wikipedia apps have and some more. You can search within the app, move back and forward, quickly navigate categories, bookmark articles, etc. The killer feature is that it caches all of the pages you visit so that you can view them even while offline.
Better than paid versions
Peednas 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is simple, straightforward, and free. The only feature missing is the ability to resize the text. Hopefully it will be part of a future release. Excellent work.
Competition!
XavaX 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
Wiki-war! Wikipanion, Wikiama, Quickipedia... Largest benefit of Wikiamo? More viewing area, the search box is it's own screen. Largest drawback? Font size and other customizing must be set through Settings, can't do it within the app yet.
Excellent
ninjas_never_lose 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Robust features, easily the best Wiki app out, free, and they keep adding features. Perfect for my college classes.
Amazing app!
Cowcowcowcowcow 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app is the best wikipedia article viewer I know of. I only wish it would search within articles instead of just their title. Then it would be the perfectest
Just okay
cyclista 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
This is just okay, not nearly as good as Wikipanion
Very handy
BrujoLoco 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This application simply formats Wiki - but very nicely! It makes all the difference, no more scrolling back and forth to read the entry, nice history, search, bookmarking and a spiffy entry index. I feel like I really have Wikipedia in the palm of my hand.
Very good
Girald 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have a paid version and a free version . This one is by far the best.
Perfect!
Rachel_86 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
The most useful app I've downloaded so far; wikiamo seems to be so much better than any other wiki-app. Love the layout, simple searching etc. Get it, it's great!
Perfect!
thesolaris 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Best wikipedia software I have seen in the appstore so far. Thanks.
Best of Current Offerings
Bozocity 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
All Wikipediaw readers have a fatal flaw: They search only titles of articles, not the articles themselves. Thus, they find "Hartford Circus Fire," but not "Ringling Fire 1944," which Google or Wikipedia proper can find. This may be a problem with the API, but it means no Wiki reader replaces Safari. Still, of all the Wiki readers, this has the best interface for a small device. Unlike others, everything implemented here works consistently and correctly. Features to add: Startup screen needs something to confirm the app has launched; it currently presents only a blank search box. "What's Nearby" with option for manual configuration for ipod users.
Nice!!

A Must Have
akarp 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I'm pleased I decided to give this one a try. It brings the free online encyclapedia to the iPhone in a very usable stable format. Scrolling through Wikapedia pages by way of iPhone Safari led to too many Safari crashes. No crashes yet with this app. And the pages are much easier to read by way of the cool formating. Thank you!

The feature to be able to search non-English wiki makes this one the winner for me. ありがとうございます!
Decent
Crosscrescent 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
Great app, but it was pointless to make if wikipanion was out first because that one is better and it is the one that I will be keeping on my iPod 2G
Are you experiencing "Random searches" ?
Recycled Electron 5.0 stars Version: 1.9
If so go to the settings (in system settings [the gears icon] and look under Wikiamo's entry). Turn off "shake to shuffle". Fixed. Otherwise at the slighest movement of your iDevice you get a random page.
pretty good
Pianoman0615 3.0 stars Version: 1.8
