TiPb Picks of the Week for September 17, 2011
Calendar16 Sat, 17 Sep 2011 14:07:56 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Saturday, Sep 17, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! I love Amazon. I visit the site multiple times a day, whether to order things for my home or the office, or just to browse and do some product research. I’m also an Amazon Prime member, which only fuels my compulsion even more, allowing for free 2-day shipping of almost anything. As a fully-grown child with instant gratification issues when it comes to purchases, Prime can’t be beat. But mostly, I like being able to Read More
Favorite Four: Reference Apps
Calendar16 Wed, 29 Jun 2011 17:30:59 UTC +00:00
By Kevin Stout on June 29th, 2011 In this week's Favorite Four, we list our favorite reference apps. Using the iPhone and iPad as a tool to quickly lookup something (often to settle a bet!) is an often under-appreciated and useful feature (it’s even the biggest folder on our homescreen for some of us!). While one can argue that a Wikipedia app or just using the browser is sufficient for looking up everything, a dedicated and specific reference app can’t be beat in its category. So this week lists our favorite four reference apps. iBartender This app (which is surprisingly the #7 top paid iPhone reference app) is the ultimate companion for a bartender. iBartender is a simple enough app to explain, it’s one of those books that can be found behind a bar listing all kinds of alcoholic drinks no one knew existed. iBartender trumps all of those bar books Read More

Wikipedia App Roundup
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Jul 2010 21:02:40 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Monday, July 5, 2010 at 2:02 pm.   Wikipedia is one of the greatest resources ever created, and should be easily accessible by anyone, no matter where they are. Here’s a roundup of some of the most popular Wikipedia applications on the App Store. All of them will have the most up-to-date information, and work on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Wikipedia Mobile is the official Wikipedia app, so naturally it is completely free and ad-less. One of the unique features is the ability to view nearby points of interest on a map, which can be pretty interesting. The main downsides are that the app is quite slow compared to the others and has limited features, as it is essentially the mobile Wikipedia site rolled into an app. There are no tabs, so you can only view one article at a time which makes it harder to Read More
Articles: Wikipedia with class
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
If you frequent Wikipedia -- and appreciate an interface that's both beautiful and highly functional -- Articles is an iPhone (and iPad) app you should try. Going beyond just being a wrapper for the less-than-beautiful compendium of user-generated knowledge, it offers a very pleasing way to navigate the tomes. In addition to normal browsing, Articles offers integrated maps and uses geolocation to offer items of interest around you, or around any location you specify. It also has support for multiple pages, a la Mobile Safari, so you can follow multiple lines of research without losing your place. Automatic spelling suggestions help you locate your information, and an integrated chapter browser helps you navigate. You can bookmark pages, and organize bookmarks in folders, as well as search your history by day. Recently-viewed articles are even available offline. I haven't played with every Wikipedia app out there, and I've heard some great things Read More
Wikipedia Gets Pretty with Articles iPhone App
Calendar16 Fri, 19 Mar 2010 23:15:19 UTC +00:00
by When it comes to accessing Wikipedia on your iPhone, there’s no shortage of options. This week, a new app entered the arena dubbed Articles, and for users who value a solid interface and pleasant viewing experience, it’s an excellent choice. The app, which is $2.99 in the App Store, features some innovative features, like viewing articles based on your location, a really great photo viewer (complete with the ability to either copy photos or save them to your camera roll), and a multi-page interface that works the same way as Mobile Safari. The app also features a pull-down menu, a la Tweetie 2, that can set the device’s orientation — perfect for those that want to view Wikipedia articles while in bed or on their side. You can search both article titles and content, bookmark your favorite articles in folders of your choice, and even view an article at random Read More

Back to School: Top 10 iPhone Apps for Students
Calendar16 Tue, 25 Aug 2009 20:47:49 UTC +00:00
Ah, the smell of erasers and chalk dust is in the air, which can mean only one thing: it’s back to school time in many parts of the world. While I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was happy my school days are behind me, I am a bit jealous that students heading back to school now have a plethora of great web and mobile applications to help them tackle the tasks involved with obtaining an education. I would have killed for some of the great applications available to students today — almost all of which are cooler (and more useful) than the Tetris app I used to play on my graphing calculator. In this list we’ve assembled ten of the must-have iPhone applications for students heading back to school. These apps will help you stay organized, take notes, and study better. What other iPhone applications are helpful to you Read More
Wikipedia Foundation creates official iPhone app
Calendar16 Thu, 20 Aug 2009 19:30:00 UTC +00:00
The Wikimedia Foundation has just released a free app for accessing the web based encyclopedia right on your iPhone or iPod touch. Wikipedia Mobile [iTunes link] brings the full boatload of Wikipedia knowledge to a nicely formatted iPhone screen. In my tests, it responded quickly, and without any glitches over Wi-Fi and the 3G network. The only issues really are that there are already dozens of similar apps available for the iPhone. In fact, if you go to the Wikipedia site in Safari things are nicely optimized for the iPhone screen. Of course the app has a built in history button, but Safari does too. Some of the other Wikipedia apps I've tried are Wikipanion [iTunes link], which has more features, including changing the font size, and Wikiamo [iTunes link] that allows landscape view, reading of saved material offline, and links to other languages. I'd like to see the ability to Read More
Wikipedia (Finally) Has an Official iPhone App
Calendar16 Tue, 18 Aug 2009 20:39:30 UTC +00:00
by While there are many unofficial Wikipedia iPhone apps on the market (some of which work really well), there’s never been an official one from Wikipedia itself. That changed today as the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit that runs Wikipedia, has launched an official iPhone application: Wikipedia Mobile [iTunes Link]. The free app does exactly what you’d expect it to do: access Wikipedia. The focus, according to the Foundation, is “on being very simple and very fast.” The entire thing is community-built and open-source, and in the nature of Wikipedia, they’re looking for more people to contribute. The app itself is nothing to rave over; it is indeed simple, but unfortunately not particularly fast-loading. Still, it gets you the information you’re looking for, it loads images, and it is easy to read. What you can’t do is save favorite pages, edit pages, or even browse tables of contents – things other apps Read More
Wikipedia Lauches Official iPhone App
Calendar16 Tue, 18 Aug 2009 19:41:59 UTC +00:00
The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the popular Wikipedia, just released its first official iPhone application for Wikipedia. Wikipedia Mobile, which is available for free in the App Store now (iTunes link), gives users access to iPhone-formatted Wikipedia articles. The truth, however, is that this isn't a very good application and doesn't really go beyond anything the regular mobile Wikipedia website doesn't already do. Indeed, the app is basically just a wrapper for the mobile Wikipedia site. There are already a number of very good Wikipedia apps out there, including Taptu's Wapedia (iTunes link), Wikiamo (iTunes link) and Wikipanion (iTunes link). The official Wikipedia app doesn't add anything new here. While other apps at least include features like the ability to easily browse tables of content for apps and include in-page searching or the ability to save posts for offline reading, the official Wikipedia app doesn't feature any of these Read More
How To Get Through A Semester With Your iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 07 May 2009 19:52:59 UTC +00:00
see also:  Sure, the semester is coming to a close, and you’re probably in the midst of finals week, and you’re thinking – well, why would I read this article now? The reason is quite obvious - statistically speaking, most students don’t do nearly as well as they planned in a semester. Finals – being the last chance at improvement – typically don’t go too well for most students. So unless you’re a young Feynman, you’re probably thinking about what you did wrong, and how you can improve. While the real key to improvement lies in your approach to studying, technology must not be neglected as a means of assistance. The iPhone – your most portable computer – is an unbelievably helpful tool when it comes to educational organization, studying, note taking, staying connected with other students, data reference, and more.  Organization myHomework This application is all you need to keep track of Read More

So Glad This Came Out
"Showtime" 4.0 stars
For awhile now I have been using a springlet (a web app that quickly searches wikipedia without loading the whole page) to view wikipedia, but the process kinda slow for my liking. I have checked out the other wikipedia app in the app store I didn't really care for that one either.
Good for regulars, not for wikipedia users
idima 4.0 stars
This is a nice application for reading Wikipedia, but not good enough for Wikipedian regulars. You can't edit here like you could with the Safari webapp, and some things don't show up how they're supposed to.. Not an easy interface to use.. Good for reading on the go, not for anything else.
Great app!

Very nice, much improved

Nice app and very useful, much better now in 1.1 with custom font sizes. The only other thing I would suggest would be a little nicer way to view the photos, then I'll move from 4 to 5 stars.

It works faster then the website Perfect for quick look up info Works great and snappy over edge network just needs some settings and maybe a way to bookmark your fav searches
Just one little complaint...
fortris 4.0 stars
The font size is HUGE. It barely shows a paragraph at a time. If they could give us an option to make it smaller, then it would get 5 stars.
Quick access to Wikipedia
Rayfire 4.0 stars
This app really is quick on finding stuff on wikipedia. I did notice the large fonts so it would be easily read, can be viewede on landscape and portrait, as well as the pictures. The bottom panel I had to figure out what those icons were, I wish there was a help or just provide it on the app's description. The bottom panel consists of Back, Forward, Sections, Links. One thing I would suggest for the future update is a "Back to the top" link, or somehow make it easier to go back to the search box. I had a hard time scrolling when the wikipedia's description was way too long. Overall it's a handy wiki-app :)
Great Free App

This is a great free wikipedia recreation app. Could use some more features, but being free it really doesn't matter.
An excellent interface to Wikipedia right on my homescreen!

Awesome app. For all you that are giving this a bad rating because you don't trust wikipedia, stop listening to your teachers. I've tried to change the facts, it is virtually impossible to get by their system
Just use wikipedia on safari...
TheKaram 1.0 stars
Worthless app. It basically re-aligns and re-wraps wikipedia pages to fit the iPhone screen...but with big ugly fonts and none of the functionality. This app involves no info organization at all...just a very long ugly webpage.
Good app, huge fonts
Peednas 4.0 stars
This is a pretty good app that is a welcomed replacement for the web version(s). The ability to book mark is greatly appreciated and tapping the top bar to take you back to the top of the page helps. Not sure how useful the external links feature is since the links are already in the article. The problems are the layout and text size. Font size needs to be reduced and the page shouldbe reormated a for a cleaner apperence.

Striver333, the feature that allows the user to clear the Wikipanion history on the next launch is supposed to save you from the hassle of having to open the application to clear the history. There is a feature that allows the user to clear the history from within the application. To do this, press the bookmarks button (located at the top right of the screen in the search bar), then press the button on the bottom right of the screen that shows an image of a clock (this shows your history). Now just press edit (on the bottom left) and clear (on the bottom right). To go back to your bookmarks, just press the button that is next to the history button (this button has the bookmarks symbol). So to simplify this process: Bookmars Button, History Button, Edit Button, Clear Button. I hope this helps you to realize that the "Remove History (On next launch only)" is meant to be a time saver.
