App Showdown: Wikipedia Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Nov 2011 17:30:00 UTC +00:00
Posted 11/01/2011 at 9:30am | by J Keirn-Swanson There are almost as many Wikipedia-based apps as there are articles in Wikipedia. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but there are tons of apps that help put everyone's favorite online source of data in your pocket. While you could read Wikipedia’s article on apps, we think our article is much better [need citation]. Articles is a pretty skin for Wikipedia whether in its iPhone or iPad version. Sophiestication Software has chosen a pleasing design for replicating articles. Everything is laid out like a very well designed one-columned magazine with light sepia toning to the page.  A very nice looking layout wins you lots of points with Steve Navigation buttons as discrete as Safari’s, running across the top on the iPad and bottom on the iPhone. That's not the only place it resembles mobile Safari, as multiple pages can be loaded and accessed very similarly Read More
Wikipedia App Roundup
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Jul 2010 21:02:40 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Monday, July 5, 2010 at 2:02 pm.   Wikipedia is one of the greatest resources ever created, and should be easily accessible by anyone, no matter where they are. Here’s a roundup of some of the most popular Wikipedia applications on the App Store. All of them will have the most up-to-date information, and work on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Wikipedia Mobile is the official Wikipedia app, so naturally it is completely free and ad-less. One of the unique features is the ability to view nearby points of interest on a map, which can be pretty interesting. The main downsides are that the app is quite slow compared to the others and has limited features, as it is essentially the mobile Wikipedia site rolled into an app. There are no tabs, so you can only view one article at a time which makes it harder to Read More
Back to School: Top 10 iPhone Apps for Students
Calendar16 Tue, 25 Aug 2009 20:47:49 UTC +00:00
Ah, the smell of erasers and chalk dust is in the air, which can mean only one thing: it’s back to school time in many parts of the world. While I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was happy my school days are behind me, I am a bit jealous that students heading back to school now have a plethora of great web and mobile applications to help them tackle the tasks involved with obtaining an education. I would have killed for some of the great applications available to students today — almost all of which are cooler (and more useful) than the Tetris app I used to play on my graphing calculator. In this list we’ve assembled ten of the must-have iPhone applications for students heading back to school. These apps will help you stay organized, take notes, and study better. What other iPhone applications are helpful to you Read More

Mobile Recherche-Werkzeuge
Calendar16 Wed, 20 May 2009 08:15:10 UTC +00:00

One of several good Wikipedia clients
Tad Davis 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
There are several good Wikipedia clients, each having some feature that sets it apart. For me, the key feature of this one is Queue Mode, which allows you to click links in the current article and, rather than jumping to them immediately, save them for later followup. This is a brilliantly simple idea that fits perfectly with the way I've always wanted to use Wikipedia, but couldn't till now.
It's good and looks promising
sss4r 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Finally, bookmarks! LOL. Bout time. Safari might be free, but it's clunky compared to this client. It really delivers well the free content. Makes the iPhone feel like a research device/information tool specifically when running Wikipanion. Plus the features make this worth the 5 dollars. The queue is perfect as a launchpad for future articles to be read so I don't have to remember or keep a separate list for those random paths. I need folders in bookmarks. I can't load bookmarks when an entry is loading slowly over E. Icon looks sweet but makes me think dictionary. There are some styling issues: text and elements overlap for some pages. Looking forward to updates. Learning doesn't have to be boring. Knowledge is the spice of life. Hard to put a price on expanding my consciousness.
OK, the extra features are kind of worth it
Roquentin999 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Infuriating price though: it's right at the most I'm willing to spend for this, Wiki-junkie that I am. These less-than-$10 apps are bankrupting me by degrees. Frankly, I'd like to see the persistent-queue feature on the actual website: very, very handy. At this point I can almost say that I prefer to browse Wikipedia on the iPhone than on computer. I'd have stuck with the "W" icon, or something like it, instead of one that looks too much like Mac OS X's Dictionary.app.
Plus and minus
Zellers 3.0 stars
Queued browsing and individual control over saved (cached) articles--independant of bookmarks--is why I spent the 5 bucks, why I use this Wikipedia reader the most, and why this app stands alone among the many. These features seem to work perfectly, or nearly so. On the other hand, the UI needs tons of work. For example, the only access to bookmark-related controls and screens is via the button in the search textbox at the top of the page. This should really be accessible from the main menu bar at the bottom, perhaps by combining the contents and related links buttons and screens (see Wikiamo). And even when you touch the app title bar to scroll to the top, and then the bookmark button, you still may have to back out of the bookmarks hierarchy to the top level just to access the add button. This is nearly a useability nightmare. Here is where more standard and more predictable UI design elements can bring huge improvements. As referenced above, the Wikiamo app seems to have gotten the basic UI elements right on (but lacks the huge features mentioned at the top). Control over rotation and rotation itself are very iffy. I'm not even sure the rotation lock works at all; surely not as expected. I would like to see three options for a Rotation or Orientation setting: 1. Auto, 2. Portrait, and 3. Landscape, with the 2nd and 3rd settings being locked. And I mean locked: right from the app launch. Also, smoother, more predictable rotation is needed when rotation is enabled. Here, Wikiamo does it well, but lacks any settings to control rotation.
Amazing
Br'er Lappin 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I've used just about every Wikipedia app over the last several months and can definitively say that Wikipanion is the best. Both the Queue mode and Offline Browsing features are implemented very well into an already extremely polished and feature packed app. Initially I was hesitant to upgrade, but the premium above the free version is definitely worth it for such an enriched Wiki experience. Highly recommended!!
good!!

This is SWEET!
oracle_ab 5.0 stars
Definitely the best Wikipedia app out there bar-none! Loved the fee app, but purchased for two reasons: 1) I wanted to support the developer in continued work on both versions of the app, and 2) I'm on a touch, so I need the ability to store pages offline. Keep up the work!
It's better than using the website on a real PC.
btipling 5.0 stars
There are many additions such as the que mode, the history of what you've read, bookmarks, iphone menu instead of html link menu for the table of contents for articles, and an iphone menu for related content and categories make the $5 worth it if you are the type to like reading wikipedia.
The best wiki app here!
Hieu Nguyen 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
I've tried most of wiki app availabled in the appstore to date & Wikipanion Plus is the best. Kudos to the developer! SUGGESTIONS: -Please add Categories (or maybe Tags) system to Bookmark and Saved Pages. -An option to disable/enable auto screen rotation would be nice. Thank you!
Well worth the money - Unique 'Queue' feature
Picky guy 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
Wikipanion Plus was well worth the $5 when it had the 'Queue' feature as its main attraction. Now with the local save feature for off-line viewing, it's a no brainer, Wikipanion Plus is a must have for the I-Touch and the I-Phones without a data plan. Also, the in-program font size adjustment control is nifty, allowing you to size up or down as much or as little text as you want on the screen. Suggestions for future releases: 1) Add an AUTO scroll feature with a user setable speed control. This will allow the read to have a hands free experience. You could even tie the scroll to accelerometers so that a slight flick of the wrist will scoll by a user setable amount. 2) Add a folders option in the bookmarks. Without folders and after much bookmarking, it becomes overwhelming with pages and pages of bookmarks. 3) Add a skins feature or at least an option to change the background or foreground colors. Great job. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to future updates.
My favorite way of doing wikipedia research.
mspasov 5.0 stars
Wikipanion is fast and has some unique features. I highly recommend it.
Great app.
KRSONE 5.0 stars
I paid the five bucks because I thought the free version deserved to be paid! The full version is way beyond it! Try the free one first and then think you will add the helpful Queue mode and offline (even if you have the right plan you will get articles faster). Simple but efficient.
buy it
bcircle 5.0 stars
the best mobile wiki app.
Right on Queue!
iUberGeek 5.0 stars
Best Wikipedia app on the App Store! I prefer Wikipedia Mobile's layout, but the Wiktionary lookup and the queue mode make Wikipanion+ the best, even at $5. The queue mode is a dream for curious Wikipedia readers like myself, who previously had to hop between pages when they found an interesting link. Also, both Wikipanion apps have a beautiful, functional, and intuitive UI that Apple could not improve on (except for one thing: make bookmarks accesible from more places than just the article entry bar)! So, why are you still reading? Get one of the Wikipanion apps! Please add a simple integrated web browser to explore external links.
Extremely impressed

Just what I needed
m1k83l 4.0 stars
I was on a trip in Europe. I didn't have a constant data network. The save page and queue features were great as I traveled from city to city. I liked its interface better than the other wikipedia readers when I bought this app in November.
Great!
runcoberry 5.0 stars
This is great! I love the queue. It could be significantly better if it had support for wikitionary, the companion dictionary to wikipedia. Overall amazing job!
Simply amazing

Imagine going abroad and having no always on internet connection. With wikipanion+ you can always have your most read articles with you. Amazing. It's a must for every iPod Touch user!
Loved the free version...

I am constantly on this thing. The added features in this paid version is worth the price. The bookmarking feature is so helpful.
Great Wikipedia App
ATinNC 5.0 stars
Love the plus version! If you're considering this, try the free version 1st. You'll see -- the features are great, the UI very solid and simple. Great job!
Queue Mode is fantastic
jcucc 5.0 stars
The ability to queue pages for further reading without interrupting the current article is wonderful. Wikipanion Plus would be *really* cool with voice recognition.
Awesome application

An awsome app that got better.
Elegant UI and great features for heavy Wikipedia users
sklender 5.0 stars
The author of this app has done an outstanding job on both the free and paid-for versions. The Queue feature on the Plus is the killer upgrade: a simple tap on a link adds the article to the queue for later reference and browsing. And the ability to download links for offline reading is great for airplane trips.
Best Wiki App
bcomwhtur 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
I tried other wiki apps and they just don't stack up to Wikipanion Plus. The free Wikipanion version is good but I'm glad I paid to get the fantastic features. The developer has done a great job of adding new features and keeping the usabiltity very intuitive. The only suggestion I have is to add a 'Near Me' function like WikiMe. I would love to just have one app that handles all my Wiki needs.
Awesome!
Madrobby 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
Gladly paid for the app, big fan of the free version, too. Looking forward to future updates, please keep up the awesome work!
The best wikipedia app!
Thee Ferret 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
It's awesome now that we have offline page viewing. This app blows evey other wikipedia app out of the water. A MUST have for any college student. This app has saved my life many times. Since I use an iPod Touch, I need the offline page view for when I leave a wifi area. Plus, the bookmark feature comes in handy win you frequent articles that change every couple days or so. Buy it. One of the best $5 apps out there. One of the best apps period. Get it and get wiki-ing....
Fix the glitches
Super_Geek360 4.0 stars
It started out as a good app, but over time has developed many glitches. Also, tabs would be nice. Overall though it is a superb app.
Most used app
TimSpears 5.0 stars
Wikipanion is the most used application on my phone second to mail. This just makes the whole process of reading Wikipedia on the small screen a pleasure. I was perfectly happy with the functionality provided by the free version, but since I use it so much felt obligated to purchase the Plus version. Now that I've been using it for a bit, I really do like the Queue mode. Good Job.
This is THE Wikipedia app to own
Fair Reviewer 5.0 stars
The rest don't come close. The ONLY bad thing about this app is the extra/mega/super ugly icon. Brown? If it's brown, flush it down.
Wonderful app
ThePi200 5.0 stars
I absolutely loved the free version, and I am one of those types who opens any interesting links, so the queue function sold me. I'm also on iPod, so I love being able to download what I'm reading before I leave wifi range. A must-have program for any wikipedia reader!
Does not work as claimed

I see that in fact the artical of choice does not load in to memory as claimed.I'll update my review the minute anything improves!

Suffice it to say that the official Wikipedia app leaves a lot to be desired. There are far better apps for Wikipedia than that one.
