10 iPhone Apps for Wine Enthusiasts
Calendar16 Mon, 15 Nov 2010 22:03:50 UTC +00:00
You don’t have to be a wine aficionado and toss around words like “bouquet,” “tannin” and “terroir” to appreciate a fine glass of grape. But as with everything, a little knowledge can go a long way. Getting to know wine is an ongoing and pleasure-filled process that begs for a curious palate and a lot of welcomed experimentation. If that isn’t enough motivation, consider the health benefits that moderate wine drinking offers. Numerous studies have shown that antioxidants known as flavonoids found in red wine reduce the risk of heart disease, improve cardiovascular health, produce good cholesterol, reduce inflammation and even prevent cancer. Well, in that case, pour me another glass! Regardless of whether you’re a wine snob and refuse to drink from a bottle with a screw cap, or could care less and happily swig from a box, the following 10 apps will help you better understand this refined libation. Today's Notable iPhone Apps - Wenesday July 15th Edition
Calendar16 Wed, 15 Jul 2009 22:59:26 UTC +00:00
By – Today's iPhone app reviews are all about keeping you on top of your game. With Mirror Free, you'll be able to look your best (or just trick people into looking stupid by really expecting a mirror.) With Hearing Age, you'll be able to make sure you're not getting too old (and if you are, then atleast you'll know it's time to start lying about your age.) Thomson Reuters will make sure you're up to date with today's news, and Wine Enthusiast Guide will help you choose, evaluate, manage, and enjoy wine. Mirror Free by Inner Four, Inc. Category: Entertainment Price: Free Yes, this app is a joke. But atleast the developers are up front about it. It's actually kind of funny (especially since there are 28,000 one star reviews.) The app simply puts a frame around a black screen, so that you can see your reflection in the glass. Read More

Not for Serious Wine Drinkers
TheZeroWino 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not for serious wine drinkers. The application is far too expensive for what it offers. Under "brand", which is a poor use for wine makers--unless of course you refer to the large California producers--there are mainly US wine producers. While it has general ratings for years in various areas, it is a very poor one when one. For example, all of burgandy, (nuits, beaune, etc) red and white is under one category. Don't even bother looking for a specific bottle! For what you get with this application, $1.99 would have been about right--$9.99 is way too much. Is there a retun policy for applications?
Great for Wine Novices. Less Useful for the Intermediate/Expert
iByron 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The app is well designed and the interface intuitive and iPhone-appropriate. The novice should find information on most wines he or she will encounter, presented in a simple, US-centric manner. The glossary and "Wine 101" sections are particularly useful. Those with more expertise may be frustrated by its limitations -- te only wines available are those WE has actually reviewed, and readily available but more exotic grape varietals (Tannat, Torrontes, Chambourcin) are missing -- and the somewhat simiplistic presentation (Burgundy is referred to as "the French version of Pinot Noir). Experts no doubt clicked away upon seeing "Wine Enthusiast" at the top.
An app I've been waiting for
ericsenfATmacDOTcom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
While in search of great wine deals at Trader Joe's, Costco, etc. I frequently want a way to quickly lookup wine ratings. I have tried all the other apps and sites that are supposed to provide this functionality and they have lacked that iPhone finesse. This is the app that delivers; easy to use, fast to look up that bottle you are eyeing on the shelf. If Wine Guide on my iPhone saves be from buying a single bottle of mediocre wine, it will have paid for itself. Nicely done and thanks for a great app.
Sommelier In Your Pocket?
MrBruceC 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great alternative to the subscription-based offering from Wine Spectator. I know it's impossible to include every wine, but the first three I tried to check out aren't in the database. Maybe as a future enhancement they will offer a feature where users can suggest a wine for inclusion??? Anyhow, well worth the money!
Easy to use with lots of great info
Strumerika 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Loads of wine reviews, easy to use and fast, plus a lot of helpful wine information. The vintage chart is an awesome tool to use if a restaurant runs out of a certain vintage on the list.
looks ugly and crashes all the time
Danger Jesus 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is devoid of any sort of asthetic design. The actuall functionality is decent and the database of wines is ok, but very limited. It has also crashed on me multiple times. It would be a lot better if they had some cool logging features like Wine Snob.
Disappointing
QTLLP 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Crashes constantly. Missing lots of wines. Not what I expected. Not worth the price.
Where is the log area?
RMC4571 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great but where is the area to make notes on the wines or keep a log of wines you've tasted? If you added that, you would leave the other wine apps in the dust.
Perfect Restaurant Companion
Robert_928 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm not a wine expert, but enjoy having a good bottle with a meal on occasion so I am really glad to have this app based on a trusted wine reference. Now I can check the ratings of those wines on a menu and be sure I'm ordering something decent. Having a Wish List section is great as I can easily pull up those that I have enjoyed in the past, but can't remember - I can see using it to purchase a bottle after I have enjoyed it at a restaurant. Thanks Wine Enthusiast and mobileAge for a great app.
Good start; Needs much more in database
jeffreydkern 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I like this app but there needs to be a more detailed database of wines -- like where are the major French Bordeaux wines from the big names (i.e. Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, etc.)? If they're there I couldn't find them.
Would be wonderful if free, ok for $2, not OK at price
hersk 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Hit rate for vintages in my collection for Ladera, Peju, Chimny Rock Na. Few others Zero! not because mine are young, good but small vintages are just missing. Educational material is first grade cartoon version. This is my impression after 30 minutes with program- will recant if I am somehow impressed with more exposure- but will be amazed if that happens
Best, and now much improved in many respects ...
mountainguy 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
UPDATE: Well, thank goodness, the developers hired a real graphics artist and revised the interface. The embarrassing icon has been replaced with a stylish one; well worth another look. I'll be returning to update my review.
Great start 12/8
Wino in n.o. 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very nice program! The interface is fast and clean and definitely beats looking up wine reviews on safari. The search feature is great for finding new wines to try. Unfortunately more updates are needed as many wines in my cellar are not reviewed. Despite this it is a great start and with more updates this program will be fantastic.
This is an actual database
Booondocks 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app is built around an actual wine database, which is updated all the time by the people at WE, not just some guy in his garage. Also, all the other apps are just glorified note pads designed to help users keep their own wine notes. That's great, but what I need is what this app offers, actual buying information. Sure it's not perfect, but when I wrote to them with suggestions via their blog at wine enthusiast magazine, they responded quickly, and then actually included some of features I had suggested in the latest update. This tells me that they're working hard to improve this app, and I'm counting on it getting even better.
Works Well
RedSpyderX 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Finally, a good wine program for the iPhone! This one lacks some features but an excellent serach tool covers almost everything. I love the "Wish List" which includes a picture of the bottle plus the price and review. Good work!
Easy to use, cleanly designed
CruleToBeKind 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Found out about the program because of its icon (thanks Gizmodo) – have to say though it’s a pretty good little app. Not sure what the compaints are here regarding the design, certainly is clean and intuitive to me. Definitely nice to know I now can look up a wine while out. I’m no wine expert, so this will definitely help.
getting better all the time
tangerineseeds 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
the recent update's new icon is a better fit. the app itself is easy to use with a solid layout. haven't had it crash once. I appreciate the glossary included with the app as one does not have to go back and forth between this and wiki to know WTF. would like to see the addition of user notes re: wines and/or favorites list. I'm sure that a team of rapidly typing monkeys are hard at work inputting more recent wines. being that folks have made wine for nigh on a zillion years, they do have their work cut out for them!
Awesome!
The Toner 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I work at Morton's and it has helped me a ton!
Good, not great
@nonymous 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
There are a lot of wines/vintages that are missing. Even with 64k, I'll find about 20-30% of what I look up, and many times have to read about a different vintage. If they continue to update and enhance, this app could evolve into something pretty special. Until then, I feel like I paid way too much. Oh, and am I the only one who thinks that the app icon looks mildly pornographic? I show this to a lot of people and it always gets a reaction. Can we 'class up' the icon a bit plz?
Need two apps to get the job done
Watercat2 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This offers the best data base available thus far for reviews. If you want to keep your own notes and add wines not listed you have to buy "wine snob". Someone needs to combine these features into one app.
Needs Work Wait to buy!
DMcD 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good start ... WAIT to buy for more robust database ... To expensive for today version ...
Over priced!
podjoy 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Worth $2.99 don't be a sucker like me and over pay. Right now program is buggy and slow.
A very good all round wine guide app
SteveOMoscow 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I like this program. Unfortunately, you can't get the individual wine reviews with out access to the internet so this is a drawback, particularly if you are in a restaurant with no access! I hope the future editions can provide full program access without internet.
Useless for purchasing wine
rosski 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had expected a guide that would be helpful in purchasing and ordering wine, but with the dated listings (very few wines listed from the last 5-6 years), it is impossible for this to be so. What a disappointment!
Pinots are there
Joy Miller 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Mengam, I did a search of wines for just the Carneros region in California, Pinot Noirs 90 points or more under $100 and got 113 entries.
Regions
dakirst 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Love this app! It's loaded with info and has been a great reference tool, but would like to see more regions listed under "Vintages" menu. Especially in the US. I can't believe How much is within this little app! Just expand your ratings/entries in the regions under Vintages.
Later vintages are definitely represented
clintonL 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Some people have commented about the lack of coverage for recent wines. Currently the application's description specifies that 29,000 reviews are for wine vintages from 2004 onward. Each month 2000 or so new reviews are added, this month 2900 professional wine reviews were added.
Good, but could be better
Mobilescott 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
Would be more iseful if you were able to key in brand/wine and get a review, rather than having to cull thru lists looking for the one you want to know about.
Best wine app to have!
Macsimus 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
I own a liquor/wine store in Studio City and this app makes my life so much easier. With the latest update, things work much quicker. It doesn't list ALL wines I carry but it's a great way to sell wines and create a database of the wines I do carry. Even for the average wine drinker, this app is awesome and I would recommend it to anyone starting to drink wine or someone with a cellar! Thanks so much!
Lacking in content
SonosPhan 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
This guide is very limited. I would gladly pay more for a more comprehensive guide. I do not recommend this app. The design of the app is ok but that means nothing when the content is so lacking.
Almost Worthless
Hgbjr 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
Wine data base is old. Vintages are no longer available in most cases. I've not found many recent vintages listed even for the best known wines. Search engine seldom returns anything useful!!
