TiPb Picks of the Week
Calendar16 Sun, 19 Dec 2010 14:45:51 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Sunday, Dec 19, 2010 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked this week, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! The very first app I purchased the day I bought my iPhone, is still the one I use every day. Bejeweled has long been a favorite of mine. The Palm and Windows Mobile versions weren’t cheap, but in iTunes, it’s only 99 cents. While most of you are probably familiar with the basic concept – match coloured jewels in rows to clear jewels and score points. Bejeweled has improved greatly even since I Read More

For those who are asking what would be the future of the dictionary, the answer is right on the App Store and it goes by the app name - Word Lens. If this is not the coolest app that ever hit the App Store since its inception, it should at least be the coolest iPhone app for 2010. Simply put, Word Lens is an augmented reality app that translates words that your iPhone scan into another language. Right now, the app only has the English to Spanish, Spanish to English language translation pack. But more languages will be supported soon. Aside from the cool augmented reality translation tool, this app also does another cool thing. Two cool things, in fact. First is that you can scan printed words and you can let the app display it in backwards mode. Or you can scan these printed words and let the app delete Read More
Remember the Babel Fish? As fans of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" will recall, it lived in your ear and immediately translated whatever language a person was speaking into whatever language you could understand. Word Lens for iPhone works just like a Babel Fish, except it doesn't live in your ear, and it translates only printed text, not spoken words. But it's no less amazing. Working a kind of magic I can't fully understand, Word Lens instantly translates whatever text your iPhone camera sees. Point it at a sign that's written in Spanish and you'll immediately see its English translation. Or go the other way: Point it at a menu that's written in English and you'll instantly see Spanish. Ay caramba! Seriously, you have to see the app in action to fully appreciate it. So with that in mind, watch this: This isn't some proof-of-concept video; this is how the Read More
Word Lens hit the store with a bang, promising real-time translation of signs, menus, and any other text your camera can capture. Does the augmented-reality app work? Somewhat, yes. Is it the future? Definitely. We're just not there yet. I'll let the images in the gallery tell the story. But first, a quick rundown of what to expect when you download this free app. It is fun to point your camera at text in the real world and see the iPhone start replacing text. There's your future part. Character recognition flops all over the place if you don't hold your hand steady, of course, but when you hit the pause button Word Lens snaps a pic and analyzes the text it has captured. There's a little camera control you can use, including a camera light (for when you're at Casa Bonita), basic zoom and focusing square (on supported iPhones like the Read More
Word Lens: Traducción mediante realidad aumentada
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Dec 2010 14:40:56 UTC +00:00
Disponible: App Store Precio: Gratis Read More

Word Lens is one of those apps that grabs your attention the first time you see it in action. Created by Quest Visual, it is an iPhone-based optical character recognition (OCR) application used for language translation. In real-world usage, it will translate a foreign language sign in an instant using your camera. Word Lens uses OCR to single out the letters in an image captured by your camera. It identifies letters, builds the words and looks them up in its built-in dictionary. Once the words are identified, translation from one language to another is easy. Translation is not perfect, but it is good enough to get the basic understanding of the translated words. Word Lens is similar in functionality to Google Goggles, which also lets you translate words within an image. Word Lens, though, has a leg up on its competition as the image processing and translating is done on the Read More
Amazing Instant Translation App Looks Great in Video
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Dec 2010 02:30:45 UTC +00:00
The World Lens iPhone app just went live tonight and this tool for instant OCR-driven language translation through your phone's camera looks great in the demo video. After buying it and testing it, though, I can tell you that at least in my limited experience it is more likely to result in motion sickness and chuckles than helpful navigation. The video (above) looks great, but I tested it on some Spanish text on both my computer screen and printed out on paper with little satisfaction. The translations fly in and out, change constantly, don't make a lot of sense and are very hard to read. A write-up on TechCrunch says that the creators worked on this for more than two years. Perhaps their results have proven better than mine. Perhaps mine would be better in the field. But for now, it's not so good. I've posted a screen capture below and Read More

posted by Trey Trawick on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 5:57 pm.   I have no words to describe how incredible this is. It’s a real time translation app that uses the camera on iOS 4.0+ devices to literally replace the words displayed with next to no lag. ¡Es asombroso! (Y gratuito, pero los paquetes de idioma costará 4,99 dólares.) Do yourself a favor and just watch the video. Read More

Instant and amazing!
Kkhalsa 5.0 stars
I hardly thought it would be possible to get live translation without the internet! It's fast, easy and you can even look up words. It's like having a dictionary in the palm of your hand but without flipping through pages and feeling like a tourist. It's so clean and fast, I love it!
Cool app, demo actually does what it says
Mr. Silvers 4.0 stars
I didn't use the "in-app" purchases, just tried out the demo for now. It certainly isn't perfect, but what it does do is pretty cool, I tried both the "erase" words and "reverse" words. It seemed to be able to detect words fairly effectively, though it is a bit inconsistent, it'll see and "unsee" various words and phrases, which could be from unsteady hands. It properly read the words though, and reversed them with a very similar font (giving the illusion that the sign/text is seamlessly translated) I currently don't have much need to translate text on the fly, so I won't be buying the in-app translators just yet. However, if the consistency and accuracy of the app can be improved, Im definitely looking into buying. For a free demo, definitely worth the download just play with. For people who want something to translate signs on the fly, expect some bugginess, but overall it will get the job done (though the translator could be completely different)
Incredible

Highly impressed
Thushan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app flat out wowed me the first time I got to play with it. It's like a visual version of Douglas Adam's Babblefish - translating what you see live. It even worked fairly well in motion on a moving train. Again, highly impressed.
Good concept but lame execution
zrb123 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
if you want the app to be considered useful or good you need to include at least one language with it. Only giving people the option to reverse words or erase then is lame. Make it add based and change your in app purchases so they remove the adds. How do i know its worth the extra purchase for the translation if you don't acutely let me try and translate something. Better luck net time.
Free app doesn't do what it advertises; needs at least 1 language to be useful
Snowboarder Bo 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I agree with the other reviewer who noted that simply reversing or deleting words is a useless application. Without at least one language included, this is a very slightly amusing app, but nothing that anyone needs or will keep on their phone. Offering the "free" (useless) version as a way to entice people to pay isn't going to work. It just makes Quest Visual (the publishers) look like jerks.
Amazing concept, flawed performance, greedy sales tactics
TJCacher 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The online ads for this product are sensational, but the product (I'm reviewing version 1.0) is flawed by technical problems (the demo "reverse words" mode does not recognize *very* clear, brightly lit text reliably, and therefore the reversed versions of the words either appear briefly, incorrectly, or not at all), and an overly greedy sales model. In my opinion, the model of selling dictionaries really is a bit greedy. I think the app should inlcude either a single full dictionary with the free app, or, at the least, a limited dictionary (perhaps with commonly used travel-related words?). I also think it's a bit over-the top to charge separately for two-way translation (English -> Spanish and Spanish -> English are separately priced? Come on.) At the present, only the Spanish/English dictionaries are even available, by the way, although I assume that others are surely on the way. As an aside, I also agree with a few of the other reviewers who would like to see an ad-based version of the app which includes a dictionary or two, with the ability to remove the ads via in-app purchase. I know that pricing and content models are something that app makers often wrestle with. I hope those responsible for this app consider a more flexible, user-friendly sales model as well as continuing to work out some of the current version's technical flaws. I look forward to future versions of this product. It really is an amazing concept.
Promising but half-baked
cayblood 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It currently doesn't detect orientation changes, so if you try to use it in landscape mode it won't work. I wish they provided the option of using Google translate instead of their built-in dictionaries. Otherwise, they had better offer a lot more dictionaries or it will not be very useful. Really cool concept though.
Wow!
Skywarpgold 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The speed at which this works and renders is simply amazing.
Doesn't work
Ellsass 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I purchased the Spanish>English pack and held it up to a few samples. Nothing happened. The samples were very clear and simple, and I was holding the phone steady. I got the same results with the included "reverse order" demo -- a little bit of flickering on the image, but nothing actually changed. I'm disappointed, but hopeful (based on the positive reviews) that it's just something I'm doing wrong. But then again, it shouldn't be that hard to get it to translate right out of the box.
Wow
Structor 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's definitely not perfect, but it works well enough to be very useful. Simply amazing.
Wow!
neonfunk 5.0 stars
Simply incredible that it performs with such speed and accuracy. Make sure to hold in portrait orientation, or it won't work (devs, maybe add a landscape mode?).
AMAZING App but Doesn
MsJG 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I *so* wanted this app but alas, I have an older iPhone 3G - which this does not work on. Seriously bummed me out. (Don't tell me to buy a newer phone... I'm unemployed and broke so no new phone is in my immediate future.)
Very Sci-Fi
BurtonWarpup 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is the most practical use of augmented reality I have seen. It feels like it's straight out of the future. I bought the Spanish-to-English version, but not because I really need it, I just wanted to support some amazing software. I'm really hoping they release a German-to-English version in the next couple months. I've got a ten spot already site aside for it. Word Lens doesn't support handwritten text since I assume that is much more difficult to recognize, but I don't really see that posing a problem. Great app, keep up the good work!
It's an amazing app, no doubt. But it's only about 75% "there".
spdorsey 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
To start, you download this "free" app, and it reverses text. Cool party trick, but no practical application. Language translations are $5.00. That's not very much, and I think it's worth the cost for such a powerful app. Currently, only Spanish translation is available. I'm sure they are working on other languages. The translations work best on high-contrast text, preferably in a sans-serif typeface. When it works, it works well. When it does not work, it's useless. This app does not (yet) replace a pocket dictionary on a trip to Mexico or Spain, but I would DEFINITELY have it along on the ride. I can see where it may come in VERY handy on short notice. It's an impressive app.
Question and comment
Bakka Bot 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have a question. Is this App as awesome as I think it is? and I have a comment. YES!
Bummer
Jeffsters 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Looks cool but needs more languages. I'm going to Brasil in a January and could REALLY use Portuguese. :-(
Nice try
MissMamo 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is not *free*. Yes, you can download it for free, but it doesn't do what it says it does for free. As if reversing the letters in a word is the same thing as translating into another language and that is an accurate demonstration of how it works. Seriously, folks??
Amazing
omnivector 5.0 stars
I've been waiting for this app since the day the iPhone was announced. Bravo, you have changed the world.
The Best App Ever!
Nathan10_4 5.0 stars
This app truly makes my iPhone epic!
Imperfect Magic
chrisash.com 5.0 stars
The future is here. It may not perfectly translate and replace all the words that you show it, but under the right circumstances it works magic!
Excellent demo
bRaD 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
People who complain that it doesn't include a language need to stop being so cheap. The app shows what it can do with the reverse words suitably. $5 isn't a lot to ask for real functionality -- they could have just charged $5 for it. This is a tremendous bargain for technology like this.
More languages
Dawidawid 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This would be more handy than many of the $8 or $10 dictionaries I have used. I will be awaiting future updates. Also, instead of buying one-direction translation, you should be able to buy a language and go back and forth at will. I live in Poland and this would be really handy for me here and when I travel. My German is rusty and my Czech and Italian are non-exsistant.
Cool Idea, Weird Pricing
jeanannvk 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is totally cool...however, to get the actual language versions you have to buy the $4.99 app...the free one is kind of worthless. And, they make you pay $4.99 for translation from English to Spanish and then another $4.99 for the translation from Spanish to English. I like the concept, but they might want to rethink the pricing structure.
