A couple of years ago, Brandon and Cody Pollet formed F5 Games as a clever way to sneak into Electronic Entertainment Expo and experience the gaming event firsthand. Both were college students with big ideas, and they ended up leaving it with even bigger ones. E3 gave their studio a soul. When the App Store exploded later, the duo discovered a direction. In 2011, Brandon and Cody went back to the Los Angeles-based event that got them dreaming big in the first place to reveal Pocket Heroes. They describe it on this week's bonus episode of the TouchArcade Show as the game they've always wanted to make, and it's been a long time coming. Pocket Heroes hits either later this month or early June, almost a full year since the duo initially showed off their idea. Pocket Heroes is a little like what would happen if Words With Friends [$2.99] and Dungeons & Dragons were Read More

Ticket to Ride Pocket adds asynchronous multiplayer
Calendar16 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
The pocket version of Ticket to Ride by Days of Wonder is among the best board game adaptations for the iPhone, and it's just gotten better with asynchronous multiplayer support. Now you can start a game with friends through Game Center, and take turns back and forth across the Internet. The experience is similar to popular multiplayer games like Words with Friends and Hero Academy. This free update also expands the game's local multiplayer mode, so that users on the same Bluetooth or Wi-Fi network can play across devices. Ticket to Ride for the iPhone and iPod touch is available for US$1.99 in the App Store, while the iPad version is priced at $6.99. Days of Wonder notes that Ticket to Ride has been extremely popular. It has sold over 350,000 copies, and a new online game is begun every four seconds on average. The game is definitely excellent, and the Read More

iPhone and Words with Friends save a life
Calendar16 Mon, 16 Jan 2012 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
The widely-played word game Words with Friends has a built-in chat feature that lets players talk to each other, and that may well have saved a man's life. According to KCTV, a player in Missouri named Beth Legler was chatting with a fellow player from Australia named Georgie Fletcher who claimed her husband was feeling ill. Legler's husband Larry, a doctor, asked Fletcher to describe her husband's symptoms. Upon hearing the description, Dr. Legler insisted that Georgie take her husband to the hospital immediately. At the hospital, it was discovered that Fletcher's husband had a 99 percent blockage in an artery near his heart. His doctors said that if he had not been taken to the hospital that day, there's a very real chance he could have died. From my secret lair in the South Pacific, I have an opportunity to see for myself just how interconnected the world has become Read More

Following our recent post about why you have to turn your iPhone off during take-off, famous actor Alec Baldwin didn’t apparently get the memo that you’re supposed to have your electronic devices off while the plane is idling at its gate. Baldwin furiously tweeted about getting kicked off an American Airlines plane for using his iPhone to play Words with Friends in the cabin. He ended up choosing the game over the flight. The “30 Rock” actor was asked to get off a New York City-bound flight for playing “Words with Friends” while the plane idled at a gate Tuesday, said Baldwin’s spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik. “He loves `Words with Friends’ so much that he was willing to leave a plane for it,” said Hiltzik, who added that Baldwin boarded another American Airlines flight to New York. How to Play Any Word You Want in Words With Friends
Calendar16 Mon, 28 Nov 2011 23:50:38 UTC +00:00
Words With Friends has undoubtedly become one of the most popular cross-platform mobile games over the last few years. The Scrabble-like title allows users to pair up with both friends and strangers to see who has the biggest vocabulary. The game follows all of the typical word-game guidelines. Each player gets 7 lettered-tiles, and garners points for using them to make words on a playing board. Typically, only real “dictionary” words are playable. That is, unless you have this tweak… MessWithWords is a jailbreak tweak by developer Brian Fox that allows you to play illegal words in the Words With Friends game. It’s a simple utility that doesn’t require any initial setup or contain a settings page. Once installed, it’s activated. And that’s where the fun comes in. After downloading MessWithWords, pop into WWF and start a new game (or play an old one). When you go to play an incorrect word, Read More

The Ad-Free Version of 'Words With Friends' Drops to 99¢
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Nov 2011 18:30:23 UTC +00:00
Surely you've heard of Words With Friends by now, haven't you? I figure, if my mom plays it, that's a pretty good benchmark for the entire world knowing about a video game. Well, if you haven't, here's the gist- Words With Friends is basically the game of Scrabble with a social cross-platform twist. Utilizing the magic of asynchronous multiplayer and push alerts, you can play games of Scrabble with friends across the world. Cooler yet, it doesn't matter if your friends have Android phones or are even playing the Facebook version of the game… It just works. It's casual and simple enough that you could play with your grandma, while being classic enough that it's fun for even the most hardcore types who enjoy playing word games with their friends and family. Seriously, I can't say enough good things about Words With Friends. I can say one bad thing though, in Read More
GameTime: Beat the Editors!

Daar Read More

App Showdown: Scrabblish Games

Posted 08/17/2011 at 9:48am | by J Keirn-Swanson We can't for the life of us figure out how there is even a legal case to be made that lets us do this App Showdown. Making words with tiles is so generic a concept that Scrabble can't have a beef with Banagrams, but Words With Friends is so completely similar to Scrabble in every particular that it boggles our minds. Nevertheless, which is the better game?   This classic has its origins in 1938 as an unsuccessful board game called Criss-Crosswords, and the story has as many twists and turns as a really great play of the game. Game maker Hasbro currently owns the property and it was their smart decision to turn over the creation of the iOS version of the game to video gaming giant, Electronic Arts. Currently spotting four versions of the game in the App Store, Electronic Arts Read More

Words with Friends now a Facebook game
Calendar16 Sun, 14 Aug 2011 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
When Facebook gaming giant Zynga bought Newtoy and rebranded it as Zynga with Friends, it was only a matter of time until games from the "with Friends" franchise started popping up on Facebook. Sure enough, Words with Friends is now playable on Facebook as of a couple weeks ago. The game's interface is basically identical to the iOS games, so if you're already familiar with those, you won't need to adapt much to the Facebook game. The coolest feature by far is the game's integration with the mobile versions. Playing the browser-based version will sync game progress to Words with Friends on iPhone and iPad pretty much instantaneously if you have the app synced up with your Facebook account. You can start a game on Facebook, then pick it up later in the iPad app. It's all very easy to set up. Words with Friends on iPad has almost exactly the Read More

'Words With Friends' Is Coming To Facebook (Duh)
Calendar16 Tue, 02 Aug 2011 03:44:04 UTC +00:00
[$1.99 / Free] is headed to Facebook. Social giant Zynga Games announced the platform flip this afternoon with a delightful teaser image. Normally, I’d be a little annoyed by the lack of information, but really, what is there to say? Words with Friends is an extremely simple riff on the Scrabble formula with basic visual do-dads and mechanics that we’ve been enjoying for quite a while on iOS. I’d imagine the reason we don’t have many details here is tied into the fact that nothing meaningful has been changed, aside from the addition of new Facebook-y social elements. Let's talk about those for a second. PC Mag is reporting that users will be able to sync their iOS and Android games to this particular version. Also, you'll be able to, somehow, post about your current game on your foes' walls. Cool! Zynga is heavily invested in Facebook, and as you know, Read More

Game Time: Games that Deserve Re-Reviews
Calendar16 Thu, 26 May 2011 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Posted 05/26/2011 at 1:00pm | by Nic Vargus The thing about iOS apps is that they're constantly updated. If we post a review, it's almost a no-brainer that an update will go live in a few days seconds. That being said, we can't just re-review every game that gets an update, or the site would be more packed with re-runs than TBS. That said, these are three apps we'd happily re-evaluate. Infinity Blade is almost definitely the prettiest game on iOS devices. And with an ever-increasing list of unlockables, even more gorgeous iPad-2-optimized graphics, and infinite replayability the game just keeps getting better. But that's not why we'd re-review it. Verdict: Better! Doodle Jump has a simple enough premise: jump upwards and don't fall. But what it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in update after update after update. Perhaps no game in all of the App Store has consistently Read More
Gaga with Friends? Zynga and Lady Gaga team up to promote the pop idol's latest album, and it looks like it's going to be a huge event. We’ve seen partnerships between artists and apps before, but this one is news-making in its sheer scope. Lady Gaga has recently announced a partnership with Zynga to promote her new album, Born This Way, across a number of their games, including two of its biggest hits, Words With Friends and Farmville. Thought you could escape the pop idol? Sorry, she’ll be lurking in your virtual field now, too! The promotion starts on May 17th. Farmville players will be able to visit “GagaVille,” a new, uniquely designed neighboring farm sporting unicorns and crystals, among other things. GagaVille will allow “little monsters” (as Gaga dubs her fans) worldwide to listen to unreleased tracks from the new album. And players who buy a $25 Zynga game card Read More
'Kalimat' and 'Wordfeud' – The Battle of the Word Games
Calendar16 Fri, 13 May 2011 20:28:56 UTC +00:00
Words With Friends [2.99 / Free / HD] has dominated the multiplayer word game genre on the app store for a long time, but recently some new competitors have elbowed their way in: Kalimat [$2.99 / Free] and Wordfeud [Free]. We've loved Words With Friends since way back when, but it can't hurt to see what the competition has to offer. Both games are Scrabble-style word games with asynchronous multiplayer - Kalimat through OpenFeint, and Wordfeud through its own system. Both also have free, ad-supported versions to try (Kalimat's cripples some features). But there are a few things that set these games apart from each other. Wordfeud beat Words With Friends to Android earlier this year and then made its way to the App Store. It's not pretty, with its muted colors and plain interface, but it's quick. I ran into a few small bugs, but nothing game breaking. Currently, it Read More

Review: Words With Friends
Calendar16 Wed, 05 Jan 2011 01:56:42 UTC +00:00
There are apps that grab you by their complexity, and then there apps that grab you by their simplicity.  Consider Words With Friends part of the latter.  After stumbling upon this, apparently, popular app a few weeks ago, I have been playing with it non-stop.  Just how addictive is this game? It has earned a spot on my first home screen.  Trust me, that’s not easy. So just what is Words With Friends?  Well, it is essentially Scrabble in many ways.  If you know Scrabble, you know Words With Friends.  The gameplay is nearly identical, if not a carbon copy (forgive me as I do not know Scrabble like the back of my hand). You arrange letter tiles on a game board to earn points.  The object is to have more points than your opponent after all of the letters are used. The app is designed and laid out very well.  Read More

Pixelocity Software is a development team of two brothers who have previous experience in the game industry working on big name console titles. They decided to branch out and form their own studio in an effort to create smaller, more fun-focused titles. Based on their first iOS offering Disc Drivin' [$2.99/Free], they're off to a pretty fantastic start. Disc Drivin' is a turn-based racing game that can be played locally or online with up to 4 players in each race. If “turn-based racing game” sounds weird to you, you're not alone, as I had trouble envisioning how something like that could work or even be fun when I first heard of the game. However, once I actually tried Disc Drivin' it quickly became clear just how brilliant an idea it is. If you've ever played the board game Pitch Car, this is essentially the video game equivalent. Earlier this week Zynga sent out some curious invitations to a conference call to various members of the media, including TouchArcade. That left us scratching our heads to see what exactly it was that Zynga was up to that could possibly interest us. I was half expecting them to reveal plans to bring more games to iOS following the success of Farmville [Free] on the App Store, but this took me completely by surprise. Zynga has acquired NewToy, the developers behind both Words with Friends [$2.99 / Free] and Chess with Friends [$2.99 / Free]. Where things really get interesting is when you consider that NewToy collaborated with ngmoco to release We Rule [Free] back in March, which has since been reskinned several times in various themes. Ngmoco has since been bought by Japanese social gaming conglomerate DeNA, which currently is one of Zynga's biggest competitors in the social gaming realm. Read More
Free Version of Words With Friends HD Hits The iPad

The paid version of Words With Friends HD [2.99] has been available for the iPad since the dinosaurs began hocking up miasmic balls of cosmic goo. But the free version? Nah, that hasn't been around at all -- until recently at least. The free version of WWF HD [free] is now available to download as of yesterday, and just like its iPhone counterpart, the app is ad-supported. In this version specifically, you'll get access to everything WWF. In other words, you'll be able to play up to 20 games at the same time, join and start online games, chat in a cute little text box while playing, receive push notifications when not in the app, and feel like a moron whenever you spell "van" knowing full well that "V" could have gone somewhere else for more points. There's not a lot that differentiates the iPhone and iPad versions of WWF. The Read More
Newtoy is the company behind the popular Games With Friends brand on the App Store, featuring Chess With Friends and the extremely popular Words With Friends. If you're on Twitter, you probably already knew that Words With Friends was popular (it's all over the service), but you might not have realized just how popular. Newtoy's own David Bettner took the stage here at GDC Online 2010 in Austin, Texas for a panel and said that the game has had 10 million downloads so far. That's allowed him, his brother Paul, and their cousin to take Newtoy from a company of three people working on laptops in a library (though they admittedly had a lot of good experience as developers at Age of Empires dev Ensemble Studios) to a 30-person game studio with a bright future in what Bettner calls "turn-based asynchronous mobile gaming." And that stat isn't the only interesting one Read More

Having done my share of downloading and reviewing, (72 apps on my iPhone 4 today), I often wonder if I have maximized the potential that the App Store can cultivate. It took me quite a while to break down and purchase paid applications. Probably too long. When I started adding iTunes credit to my account, it was if I was the conductor of entirely different ship. A much nicer ship. I first hit apps which reflected the interests related to my lifestyle. Engadget, ESPN Radio, Echofon, Words with Friends, Tiger Woods, and those similar were the Read More

TUAW's Daily App: HexaLex
Calendar16 Tue, 06 Jul 2010 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
HexaLex is a new title from developer Nathan Gray that offers up an interesting twist on the online Scrabble phenomenon. HexaLex has the same basic rules as most other word games (Words with Friends being probably the most popular iPhone title so far), with one big change: instead of squares, you use hexes to mark out the words. That creates a few interesting gameplay effects, including that you get a "bye" of two nonsense words per turn. If you can use the hexes to spell out multiple words, though, you can build up your score that way, too. Other than that, things aren't too different; you have a number of tiles to choose from, you can shuffle or exchange them as needed, and there's a full online complement to the game, complete with push notifications and nice options to brag or send messages back and forth. Unfortunately, the online service requires Read More

So You Just Got an iPhone 4 – An App Store Gaming Guide
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Jun 2010 08:20:31 UTC +00:00
If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. In the interest of space, we Read More

We’ve all been there.  Stuck with letters in Scrabble or Words with Friends that we just don’t know what to do with. It’s a painful experience that leaves you feeling drained and depressed, but it doesn’t have to be that way.  There’s help out there in the form of iPhone and iPad apps, specifically one called Word Helper, a universal app that helps you form the best words from your awful rack of letters. Word Helper allows you to import an image of your current game board along with your entire letter set in order to make letter inputting and word forming as pain free as possible. To form the best word possible, the first step is to take a screenshot of your current game board.  To do so, just press the top power button on your iPhone or iPad and the home button simultaneously.  This will place a screenshot of Read More
By Ben Harvell on May 24th, 2010 Popular puzzle game gets celebrity endorsement in Texas Newtoy Inc has been picking up some great press of late for its brilliant Words With Friends game, including our four star review. The popular multiplayer app is reminiscent of a word-based board game you may know (that rhymes with dabble) and is now available for the iPad as Words With Friends HD. The biggest print title in Dallas, Texas, D Magazine, recently featured Words With Friends and its creators, fellow Texans Paul and David Bettner, as its cover feature and is now launching its own Words With Friends celebrity tournament. With 64 places available, the tournament is open to all and will include D Magazine staff, the Bettner brothers and even Dallas Cowboys’ Martellus Bennet among the players. According to Newtoy, Words With Friends is popular with members of both the Cowboys and Texas Rangers. Read More

Review: Bananagrams is addicting without the clicking
Calendar16 Tue, 20 Apr 2010 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
Perhaps you've seen them, in Word Wars or another Scrabble movie; people who are a wee bit obsessive about their word games. For the iPhone-carrying among them, there is the official Scrabble app or Words With Friends. For people who like a little more variety in their word game apps, there are a hundred other options. Today, we look at one of the better ones, Bananagrams [$.99], which is quickly developing a fanatic player base similar to the Scrabble fans. In bookstores, libraries, and cafes around the world, people are playing Bananagrams face to face. There is also an online version through Facebook. While Bananagrams shares a lot of gameplay with Scrabble, it's really much more similar to a less famous game called Pick Two!, which was released in 1993, and to the homebrew game of Speed Scrabble. Since Bananagrams hit it big a few years ago, Parker Brothers has responded Read More

Desert Island Apps – Number 9, with Robin Rhys
Calendar16 Sat, 27 Feb 2010 18:29:33 UTC +00:00
Today we ‘re continuing our series called Desert Island Apps.  It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘.  The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music.  What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island. Today ‘s guest is Robin Rhys. Robin hosts, writes and produces the superb App Advice Daily video podcast, which I ‘m a huge fan of.  Here ‘s Read More
Ngmoco Reveals Gameplay Details For We Rule
Calendar16 Mon, 01 Feb 2010 20:12:19 UTC +00:00
Nearly one month ago, two previously unannounced ngmoco games were unearthed via an employee’s Plus+ account. One of those two games, GodFinger, was recently detailed, and now the other, We Rule, has been given the green light to be spoken about in public. In an announcement posted on ngmoco’s blog, the company indicates that We Rule is being developed by Newtoy, the creative minds behind the wonderful iPhone and iPod touch game Words With Friends. This is also the same team that once had a hand in creating Age of Empires and Halo Wars, which can only bode well for the game’s success. Below is ngmoco’s description of We Rule‘s gameplay: In We Rule, you will govern your very own kingdom. You will act as a city planner and landscaper—customizing your realm with buildings, banners, and botany. You’ll decide what crops to plant and ensure they are harvested on time. You will Read More
The 53 Best iPhone Games [IPhone Apps]
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Jan 2010 00:40:00 UTC +00:00
Scouring the App Store for the best games is a full time job. Luckily, it's a job held by the guys over at Touch Arcade. Here are their picks for the best games—and only games—available on the iPhone. While the App Store had clearly been a huge success in 2008, the continued growth and explosion of iPhone game releases in 2009 was beyond everyone's expectations. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 100,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2009 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is Read More

We wonder how many red-eye pictures we'll start seeing on Facebook if the iPhone gets an LED flash and we make fun of companies using the name Slate. iPhone Gaming: Looking Back on 2009 and Forward to 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Dec 2009 20:20:34 UTC +00:00
With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform Read More

Words With Friends
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Dec 2009 18:20:32 UTC +00:00
Words With Friends is a word puzzle game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Most of you will recognize it as an exact copy of one of the most popular board games of all time, Scrabble. The game is created by two developers who helped create the popular RTS games Age of Empires and Halo Wars. The entire point of the game is to offer a multiplayer experience that can be enjoyed at a slow pace. Players can connect with there friends over Edge, 3G, or Wifi and play a turn-based match or hop into a game with a random opponent from around the world. It's one of those games where the player will play their move and then forget about the game until it notifies you that it's your turn. The animation was great and the game played extremely smooth with no issues whatsoever. It played exactly like a Scrabble Read More
Monday Morning App HQ
Calendar16 Mon, 09 Nov 2009 09:29:55 UTC +00:00
Food For Thought Over the past few weeks/months/years, I’ve heard a good deal of rumors regarding the iPhone going to other carriers such as Verizon, or maybe even T-Mobile. I’m not here to debate whether or not this will happen, but whether such a change would be good for the App Store. With more and more people being exposed to the iPhone, we’ll see more and more people buying apps, creating a huge market base for developers. Here’s where it gets tricky though. With more and more people buying apps, will the larger companies (EA, Gameloft) start putting real advertising money into the system, only to edge out the small guys? There was a time, not all that long ago, where indie devs, many of which are developing for the iPhone today, were creating PC games. I don’t want to create a ruckus or anything, but I just hope that you Read More
While this week has been filled with news and reviews of fast paced games, I've always had a weakness for word games on the iPhone, even though I'm fairly terrible at them. Here are three recently released or recently updated word games that are all worth checking out-- Guess the News [99¢ / Free] - Surprisingly enough, the news is good for more than material to auto-tune. Guess the News pulls news stories down from various RSS feeds, and turns them in to puzzles to be solved. You're given a brief description of the article, then need to guess the headline from the pile of letter tiles on the game board. Puzzles are broken out in to several categories such as health, sports, and even "odd stories". For instance, I recently played a few games in the technology category that had me guessing the titles of Engadget posts. Guess the News Read More
Tuesday Morning App HQ?
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Nov 2009 18:06:13 UTC +00:00
It’s a fairly big week in the app store for game releases. Maybe the developers and Apple are teaming up to scare us reviewers (get it, Halloween… I thought it was clever) into working overtime to get all these reviews done. Just to name a few of them, we now have Doom Classic, Command and Conquer, Eliminate, NBA Live (last week), Asphalt 5, and Alice in Bomberland running wild in the app store, most of which are just dying for a review. Productivity, Lost I must say that working for an app review website is just about the best thing ever, but there is a major drawback. The reason half of the apps were made was to completely wipe out productivity. Some of the apps that are self proclaimed ‘master time wasters’ are in fact master time wasters. Every once in a while I’ll download something, you know, for work, and Read More
Official 'Catan' Game Builds Settlement on App Store
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Oct 2009 19:38:25 UTC +00:00
Following apparent removal from the App Store, Catan [App Store] fans were left without an outlet for their need to build roads and settlements along with gathering various resources on the go-- That is, until USM and Exozet Games' recently released official Catan hit the App Store. Catan for the iPhone is a faithful reproduction of the board game, which was first published in Germany in 1995 and has sold over 15 million copies worldwide since. The game is played with up to four players (or more with expansions not present in the iPhone game) on a board game with 19 hex tiles that randomly go together to create a different layout for each game played. Players then build settlements, cities, and roads as they gather resources and settle the island. To win the game, you need to have a certain number of victory points on your turn which are earned Read More

This app is crack. It's turn-based Scrabble and it's amazing. I can hardly get through an hour at work without checking for new moves at least twice. Email notifications are good, and I hear push notifications are a short way off, in which case I'll have to quit my job and possibly check into rehab.
Better than Scrabble
Chess Junkie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is just like Scrabble, and its only a dollar. AND, I can play multiplayer with my friends over 3G. This app runs smooth, is fast and easy to navigate, and looks great.
Love it

Sliding Duck 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game looks great, plays great, is easy to use, has chat and is free. The other scrabble type games on the iphone were there first, but are ugly and have clunky gameplay compared to this gem. Good job Newtoy.
Better than Scrabble
beardedmonkey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had some issues getting my account to recognize me, but now all is up and working fine. I play the Scrabble app alot but have always wanted the ability to close the app and still be able to play with my friends... sometimes playing scrabble can take a loooooong time. Now I can do other things and come back to see what words they choose. Gameplay and functionality is just like the companion app Chess With Friends, which is also great! My username is Henry if you wanna play me in either game :)
Love it!

Great online experience! Needs push notifications please!!!!!
Fun, but with inexplicable missing features!
kjmatthews7 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This turn-based Scrabble game is a great follow-up to the also excellent Chess with Friends. There are no features (that I know of) missing from the Scrabble implementation but, inexplicably, Newtoy has decided not to add push notifications or the ability to delete past games that have already ended for either of their apps. Otherwise an easy 5-star app!
Amazingly fun... needs one thing
garydflavin 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I absolutely love this game and also the chess with friends. If these games only had a way of tracking statistics between users this would be a five star game. Awesome job Newtoy Inc.
Excellent game

TX Shopper 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
You can play with the person seated next to you and/or the one across country - it is very addicting and the whole family can play! While I am not good at Scrabble, it sure is fun just to do. Really, really nice app!
1-year of online service?
EddyGeez! 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
What does "includes one year of online service" mean? Will this app only allow pass-and-play mode in a year and then require an in-app purchase to continue network-based games, even against local opponents? Sure seems like it. If so, that's really lame and this should be changed to a 1-star review. Plenty of other iPhone games offer server-based player statistics, high scores and network game play WITHOUT a silly subscription.

Great game but, i bought the app so that i wouldnt have to deal with them THEY WONT GO AWAY. Yes i read your thing about them being there the first launch but, i have relaunched at least 50 times in 2 days. If i had known that i wouldnt have payed for it should have kept the free one Just thought i would add that the game is great and i love it. UPDATE: QI. XI. & ZA. Are words.
It's Scrabble with a different board!
ClassicGMR 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This may not be Scrabble per se but it is absolutely an incredible rendition. There are some features that might make this better like win/loss rankings to pair players more effectively and show a top 5 list against your friends. All in all I am ecstatic that I jumped right in and bought this. It is worth $5 and is such a bargain at $0.99!!!
Huge fan

Very good game. Just wish it would let rearrange your letters while waiting for you opponent to love.
Great Scrabble-type game with excellent user-friendliness
ScottInRaleigh 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Let me start by saying I've been looking for a good asynchronous Scrabble-type game for my iPod Touch for months now. I never had much luck with the true "Scrabble," especially when it came to finding others to play against. And "Lexulous" seemed a bit too buggy, at least in its current state. But now "Word for Friends" has come along and blown those other two out of the water.
Great but needs a fix!
lazoli 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game has a great potential to be one of the beat games out there. But it needs some fixes for sure. I'd like to see the points I'll get before I submit my word! Also why doesn't the game which has ended still on my game list?(it says Game Over but it's still there!) Another thing, why am I seeing ADS even though I have the paid version which is suppose to be ad-free?!? Will "PUSH" be added with the next update? Please fix this asap!  stars until we get an update. Thank You.
Excellent!
glennarbor 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A steal at 99 cents, just buy it! What would be nice in an update. Push, friends list, ability to delete completed games.
You MUST have a connection
Dtrak 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have an iPod touch so most of the time I have no wifi. It did not say that this app won't work at all without it.
Awesome
Soupdawg30 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is really fun for anyone who likes scrabble type games. The random matching is good and you can usually find someone to play with within minutes. The best part is you can play multiple games at once and get updates sent via text or email when your opponent plays. Overall awesome game.
Woohoo!
ybfree 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Words with Friends is Scrabble but it's WAY better. You can play against anybody, anywhere. Across the room or across the world. No need for Wifi. It works over your cell connection. - Enable the ability to move tiles around when it's not your turn. - Needs Push!!!!!!!! - Add Rematch button. My entire family is addicted to this app.
One wordgame to rule them all
Cashinova 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is shockingly playable, and has successfully knocked all other games pretty much off my iPhone entirely. It's really streamlined and great, the controls are as solid as you could hope for.
Great app!
joannareyburn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love this game - my boyfriend and I play together when he's on the road, and it's great. It's so worth the 99 cents. My feature requests would be: 1. Push notifications 2. Arrange words during downtime 3. Friends list 4. Know how many points a word will be before submitting. 5. A rematch button. 6. My favorite words list. 7. Ranking.
Awesome, but how about......
Mthrun123456 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
1. The ability to manipulate your tiles when it's not your turn. 2. The ability to delete old games from the main menu screen. 3. A randomize tile button. 4. Show the potential score of a word before you submit it. 5. And for cool factor... And a one time per game "free letter swap" for a blank tile to use at those times when you have the "perfect word" minus that one elusive letter.
The game keeps crashing

I was having fun playing the free version for about half an hour then it started crashing. I thought that maybe if I bought the full version it might solve the problem, but it didn't. If they fix the crashing problem I would give this game 5 stars, but only until I can actual play and enjoy it without the crashing.
Text message spam follows account registration

I just registered for an account and have received two spam text messages already. Same thing happened to a friend when they signed up. Beware!!
Fun but....

This game is so much fun! Well it WAS until you start getting a crazy amount of ads in the middle of game play! Are you KIDDING me?!!! I paid for this game, figure out a more subtle way to the integrate ads, it's absolutely offensive. Aside from that I love it.
Where's all the big point 2-letter words!?!?
Swear Jar Inc 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love this app, but for the love of god, why doesn't it recognize some of the big point 2-letter words!?!?! Seriously, I've lost like 4 games now at the very end because it won't count "QI"
No ads?
Kevin Guzman 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
I purchased the app so that I don't have to deal with any unpleasant ads, yet all I see on the new update is nothing but ads! Yes, they're not random ads, they are ads promoting their own products, but I don't really care for them. If I want to play Hanging With Friends, I'll do so when I feel like it! So if Newtoy is really listening to our reviews, please, get rid of those disgusting ads for your own products, put those on the free version of the game, NOT the paid version!*Update*Still haven't removed the ads. I'm seriously disappointed in Zynga and with WWF team who pretend to care what their customers think. I don't want to see your other stupid games on the app I paid.
Ads are getting annoying and new FB is horrid
Randy Rathbun 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
I realize zynga is trying to promote their own aps and all, but the way they are doing this in this ad free game is really becoming annoying. To add to the madness, now the app wants you to tell all your friends on Facebook about every move. Zynga just lost a customer for good with this trick
I hereby declare Zynga a verb

It means: to take over a company (e.g.: NewToy) and crap all over their great game.I paid for Words With Friends so that it wouldn't have ads. Now I have Facebook crap popping up. I did not pay my money to advertise for you!
Stop Asking me to post after every MOVE!!
Jason V 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
This version is BUGGED!!! It asks you every time you play someone to nag them with a Facebook post. Avoid this version!!
Sound
CJ95008 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
Will give a 5 star review as soon as you allow us to turn the sound off on the game. Annoying when you want to listen to music while playing your game.
Don't upgrade version!
LabSRB 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
Never felt compelled to write a review before. If you're logged into Facebook, it'll run a popup every time you finish your turn. I don't want EVERYBODY on my friends list to know I just finished a turn!Basically prompted me to log out of Facebook in the app.
Awesome game except for…
Jake_rrr 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
Would be better if I didn't update. Now I get a pop up asking me to send a message on Facebook to remind my friends it's there turn. No way to disable it. Not linking my facebook account anymore.
Horrible now.
Chris Rios 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
The newest update is absolute garbage. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to spam someone's Facebook wall every SINGLE time a move is made? Remove this.
Terrible Facebook Integration
Jesse Jack 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
This latest version is awful; it prompts you to send Facebook requests after every turn and there's no way to disable it.
Entertaining
Rodricka Elliott 1.0 stars Version: 4.11
Had to logout of Facebook because it prompts you every single time to post on your friends wall when you finish a move. Wayyyyyyy to annoying. Ugh
