Alec Baldwin Lampoons American Airlines On SNL
Calendar16 Sun, 11 Dec 2011 20:22:26 UTC +00:00
This hysterical Saturday Night Live clip features Alec Baldwin playing the role of American Airlines Captain Steve Rogers, who came on the show to issue an official apology to mister Baldwin after the actor was removed from an American Airlines flight earlier this week. Baldwin was booted from an LAX to JFK flight on Tuesday for playing the iPhone game . The gained national media attention as well as turning a spotlight onto the wildly popular Scrabble-like app created by Zynga. One of the funniest moments occurs when SNL news anchor Seth Meyers asks Baldwin (Capt. Rogers), "Don't phones interfere with the planes communication system?" Baldwin replied; "You don't believe that do you Seth? Would you really get on an airplane that flew 30,000 feet in the air if you thought one Kindle switch could take it down? Come on!! It's just a cruel joke perpetrated by the airline industry and Read More
Alec Baldwin, was asked to exit an American Airlines flight on Tuesday afternoon when the actor remained glued to his iPhone playing the Scrabble-like "Words With Friends" game just before takeoff. Initial word of the altercation came from a Tweet by Baldwin himself just after 2:00 PM PST. "Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving." Baldwin wrote in . "Alec was asked to leave the flight for playing Words with Friends while parked the gate. He loves WWF so much that he was willing to leave a plane for it, but he has already boarded another AA flight." said a spokesman for Baldwin. As the incident made instant headlines across the web, Baldwin went on to fire several jabs at American Airlines via a few hours later, swearing to never fly with American again. The Ad-Free Version of 'Words With Friends' Drops to 99¢

Surely you've heard of Words With Friends by now, haven't you? I figure, if my mom plays it, that's a pretty good benchmark for the entire world knowing about a video game. Well, if you haven't, here's the gist- Words With Friends is basically the game of Scrabble with a social cross-platform twist. Utilizing the magic of asynchronous multiplayer and push alerts, you can play games of Scrabble with friends across the world. Cooler yet, it doesn't matter if your friends have Android phones or are even playing the Facebook version of the game… It just works. It's casual and simple enough that you could play with your grandma, while being classic enough that it's fun for even the most hardcore types who enjoy playing word games with their friends and family. Seriously, I can't say enough good things about Words With Friends. I can say one bad thing though, in Read More

Words with Friends now a Facebook game
Calendar16 Sun, 14 Aug 2011 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
When Facebook gaming giant Zynga bought Newtoy and rebranded it as Zynga with Friends, it was only a matter of time until games from the "with Friends" franchise started popping up on Facebook. Sure enough, Words with Friends is now playable on Facebook as of a couple weeks ago. The game's interface is basically identical to the iOS games, so if you're already familiar with those, you won't need to adapt much to the Facebook game. The coolest feature by far is the game's integration with the mobile versions. Playing the browser-based version will sync game progress to Words with Friends on iPhone and iPad pretty much instantaneously if you have the app synced up with your Facebook account. You can start a game on Facebook, then pick it up later in the iPad app. It's all very easy to set up. Words with Friends on iPad has almost exactly the Read More

Posted 08/05/2011 at 11:01am | by Florence Ion There are so many games in the iTunes App Store that sometimes it's really hard to figure out what to download and what's worth playing. There's also the dilemma of the age old adage that if it isn't broken, there's no point in fixing it. And, well, so many game companies have already perfected the kind of games we're looking for, so why bother looking anywhere else? Well, I can answer this one for you: do the words "free" ring a bell? If you wish you had a free alternative to popular games like Plants vs. Zombies and Bubble Bobble, you're in luck! I've found exactly what you're looking for. Maybe. Take a look for yourself after the cut and save a couple of bucks on all those big blockbuster games with these free alternatives. Because you can't spell "free" without the "f" Read More
'Words With Friends' Is Coming To Facebook (Duh)
Calendar16 Tue, 02 Aug 2011 03:44:04 UTC +00:00
[$1.99 / Free] is headed to Facebook. Social giant Zynga Games announced the platform flip this afternoon with a delightful teaser image. Normally, I’d be a little annoyed by the lack of information, but really, what is there to say? Words with Friends is an extremely simple riff on the Scrabble formula with basic visual do-dads and mechanics that we’ve been enjoying for quite a while on iOS. I’d imagine the reason we don’t have many details here is tied into the fact that nothing meaningful has been changed, aside from the addition of new Facebook-y social elements. Let's talk about those for a second. PC Mag is reporting that users will be able to sync their iOS and Android games to this particular version. Also, you'll be able to, somehow, post about your current game on your foes' walls. Cool! Zynga is heavily invested in Facebook, and as you know, Read More
'Kalimat' and 'Wordfeud' – The Battle of the Word Games
Calendar16 Fri, 13 May 2011 20:28:56 UTC +00:00
Words With Friends [2.99 / Free / HD] has dominated the multiplayer word game genre on the app store for a long time, but recently some new competitors have elbowed their way in: Kalimat [$2.99 / Free] and Wordfeud [Free]. We've loved Words With Friends since way back when, but it can't hurt to see what the competition has to offer. Both games are Scrabble-style word games with asynchronous multiplayer - Kalimat through OpenFeint, and Wordfeud through its own system. Both also have free, ad-supported versions to try (Kalimat's cripples some features). But there are a few things that set these games apart from each other. Wordfeud beat Words With Friends to Android earlier this year and then made its way to the App Store. It's not pretty, with its muted colors and plain interface, but it's quick. I ran into a few small bugs, but nothing game breaking. Currently, it Read More
Pixelocity Software is a development team of two brothers who have previous experience in the game industry working on big name console titles. They decided to branch out and form their own studio in an effort to create smaller, more fun-focused titles. Based on their first iOS offering Disc Drivin' [$2.99/Free], they're off to a pretty fantastic start. Disc Drivin' is a turn-based racing game that can be played locally or online with up to 4 players in each race. If “turn-based racing game” sounds weird to you, you're not alone, as I had trouble envisioning how something like that could work or even be fun when I first heard of the game. However, once I actually tried Disc Drivin' it quickly became clear just how brilliant an idea it is. If you've ever played the board game Pitch Car, this is essentially the video game equivalent. It's missing a couple Read More
Earlier this week Zynga sent out some curious invitations to a conference call to various members of the media, including TouchArcade. That left us scratching our heads to see what exactly it was that Zynga was up to that could possibly interest us. I was half expecting them to reveal plans to bring more games to iOS following the success of Farmville [Free] on the App Store, but this took me completely by surprise. Zynga has acquired NewToy, the developers behind both Words with Friends [$2.99 / Free] and Chess with Friends [$2.99 / Free]. Where things really get interesting is when you consider that NewToy collaborated with ngmoco to release We Rule [Free] back in March, which has since been reskinned several times in various themes. Ngmoco has since been bought by Japanese social gaming conglomerate DeNA, which currently is one of Zynga's biggest competitors in the social gaming realm. Read More
Free Version of Words With Friends HD Hits The iPad
Calendar16 Mon, 08 Nov 2010 20:47:37 UTC +00:00
The paid version of Words With Friends HD [2.99] has been available for the iPad since the dinosaurs began hocking up miasmic balls of cosmic goo. But the free version? Nah, that hasn't been around at all -- until recently at least. The free version of WWF HD [free] is now available to download as of yesterday, and just like its iPhone counterpart, the app is ad-supported. In this version specifically, you'll get access to everything WWF. In other words, you'll be able to play up to 20 games at the same time, join and start online games, chat in a cute little text box while playing, receive push notifications when not in the app, and feel like a moron whenever you spell "van" knowing full well that "V" could have gone somewhere else for more points. There's not a lot that differentiates the iPhone and iPad versions of WWF. The Read More

To say that here at Mashable we “heart” word games is as much of an understatement as saying the ocean is a bit wet. Fellow wordsmiths know there are few things better than a good game involving language, but with the App Store brimming with such offerings, which ones do you go for? To save you the trouble of sorting through the hundreds of options, we’ve spent a considerable amount of time searching, downloading and testing (hard life, we know) and we’ve narrowed down the best to a top 10 list. Best of all, we’ve focused on free games (although be warned a couple on the list fall into trial version categories) so with this list, and for the grand total payout of exactly zero, you will never be bored again. Period. This really is a taster app to try and get you hooked enough to fork out the $3.99 for Read More

The Guide to HD iPad Game Upgrades – Part 2
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Apr 2010 06:17:59 UTC +00:00
Here's Part 2 of our iPad Game upgrade guide. Again, to be clear, most of the games we are discussing are great iPhone games. The question is whether the sold-separately iPad versions are worth paying for if you already own the iPhone version. If you've never played any of these games and own an iPad, the HD version is the one to get. Here's our general rule of thumb: Here's our Part 2 list of recommendations on upgrading. Recommended Upgrades Labyrinth 2 HD ($7.99)iPad Features: iPad specific levels With a bigger screen, Labyrinth 2 HD allows for even more elaborate levels filled with tons more obstacles than would ever fit on the iPhone screen. Just like the non-HD version, there is a seemingly endless supply of level packs to download and the top down tilting control method works very well with the iPad. Labyrinth 2 HD is also a great game Read More

iPhone Gaming: Looking Back on 2009 and Forward to 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Dec 2009 20:20:34 UTC +00:00
With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform Read More

While this week has been filled with news and reviews of fast paced games, I've always had a weakness for word games on the iPhone, even though I'm fairly terrible at them. Here are three recently released or recently updated word games that are all worth checking out-- Guess the News [99¢ / Free] - Surprisingly enough, the news is good for more than material to auto-tune. Guess the News pulls news stories down from various RSS feeds, and turns them in to puzzles to be solved. You're given a brief description of the article, then need to guess the headline from the pile of letter tiles on the game board. Puzzles are broken out in to several categories such as health, sports, and even "odd stories". For instance, I recently played a few games in the technology category that had me guessing the titles of Engadget posts. Guess the News Read More

Official 'Catan' Game Builds Settlement on App Store
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Oct 2009 19:38:25 UTC +00:00
Following apparent removal from the App Store, Catan [App Store] fans were left without an outlet for their need to build roads and settlements along with gathering various resources on the go-- That is, until USM and Exozet Games' recently released official Catan hit the App Store. Catan for the iPhone is a faithful reproduction of the board game, which was first published in Germany in 1995 and has sold over 15 million copies worldwide since. The game is played with up to four players (or more with expansions not present in the iPhone game) on a board game with 19 hex tiles that randomly go together to create a different layout for each game played. Players then build settlements, cities, and roads as they gather resources and settle the island. To win the game, you need to have a certain number of victory points on your turn which are earned Read More

Better than Scrabbble
Chess Junkie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am a huge Scrabble fan but I just deleted it from my iPhone. Words with Friends is faster, cheaper, and most importantly - I can play multiplayer against my friends. This game is from the same guys who made Chess with Friends, which is another great app.
Love it

Multiplayer does not work.
PBNJay 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I never recieved the activation email, so they had to activate it manually for me. I have tried everything to get multiplayer working but all I get is "can't find user" messages. Fix this and I will update my review.
Game Play is good - ads are very intrusive and the program crashes a lot

The basics - the game play works well. Play is basic and slick, nice animation, good graphics, it works.
Promising start
FoobyDoo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is doing a lot of things right, especially considering that it's free. It really is a competent Scrabble challenger, and thanks to its nice presentation - my personal favorite. One thing that I really wish this game had (that scrabble does) was a little balloon that tells you how much your word will be worth before you make your move. I know you can count it yourself, but i've always thought that that was a nice touch.

This app is crack. It's turn-based Scrabble and it's amazing. I can hardly get through an hour at work without checking for moves at least twice. Email notifications are good, and I hear push notifications are on the way shortly, in which case I'll have to quit my job and possibly check into rehab.
Very awesome

It took several hours for my user ID to actually become active, but since then everything has gone smoothly. This is way better than the official scrabble game.
Amazing, but...

The Amazing Supergirl 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great, free game. It has super graphics, it's easy to use, and quickly finds an online player to challenge. Would love to see push, a dictionary, and the crash problem fixed. The ads are annoying but expected for a free app. I would actually give it five stars if it didn't crash so much. Thanks!
Great

Great game from newtoy. I'm a big fan. I love and have been playing Chess With Friends from day one. This current game has a lot of potential. The current ad placement is probably the most obnoxious I've seen from a free app. It definitely ruins the gameplay. But I appreciate that you've given us a 99 cent option to make the pain go away. (You should do the same for the chess app). I, for one, have not experienced any crashes like other users have mentioned. I have a 3GS, so maybe that's why. One thing missing from both this app and the chess app is push notification. Push is a MUST.
Awesome app buuuut...
DangerouslyDelisiou 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is definately a great app. I would give this 5 stars but theres one annoying thing, you can not delete your games. This wasnt a problem at first but now i have like 15 games that are over just wasting space. Its quite annoying please fix it! :)
Fun but too ads too frequent and intrusive
oooosh 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The app itself is really fun. It gives you all the functionality of a basic word-tile board game. But an ad after every turn is too much. Especially because it takes up your entire screen. Might have to spring for the pay version. Hopefully it's not as bad. Chess with friends is fun too. Ads not as intrusive there. Hope that stays the case.
Good game.

This is a very good game, but there are some issues with it. Currently, I'm unable to play it because whenever I try to open it, it crashs. I've deleted it, reinstalled it, reset my phone more than once, yet it still crashs. Also you can't delete games and you can only resign from a game when it's your turn. I've got games on my list 3 days old that have been abandoned by who I was playing.
Love it

It is a great game.
Great App but Please Listen To My One Suggestion
Cashsimpson 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love that you finally have this to rival scrabble. I lobe the chess app u have. The ads are fine to me and it hasn't crashed that I've seen. The only thing I would suggest is the ability to be able to move around my letters when it's not my turn. Sometimes it's a while before the next guy makes his move (Random Opponent) and I'd like to be able to set myself up for my next turn. Besides that it's perfect and if you add that I'll update to 5 stars. Thanks again for making this game!!!
Crashes cause of ads
SharkySharky 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The game itself is fun! The problem is that it crashes and the advertisements are the worst I have ever seen in an app. So first the ads. After EVERY turn you must view a full screen ad and click two times to close it. This is absurd and honestly I get the feeling that they made them as obtrusive as possible just to make a sale for the paid version! I know I'm tempted! The crashing is due to memory consumption. Launching the game with 50mb free and after a while it crashes and I noticed I had 6mb free! There is either a memory leak or I have a strong suspicion that the advertisements are the cause to the memory usage, slow down and eventual crashing. I played the game for about an hour straight and switched between 5-10 games frequently in this time period. Since after each move a large ad loads, I believe that the caching or loading of these ads is what is causing all these problems including my annoyance. I am torn because I hate the ads and want the full version, but I also feel like that would be "giving into" the devs making such a horrible decision on the usage of advertisements. Just sad to see such a great game be brought down by advertisements. Sad sad sad
Horrible!

Horrible ads!!!!
App rocks
Nomadichuntergatherer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
1: mine doesn't crash, even with a last generation and generally mangled phone. 2: they know they need Push notification, but I'll say it again anyway. 3: yes, the adds are truly anoying, but that is how you pay for such an awesome resourse. 4: this and Chess with Friends both need an informal skill rating system for random opponents. 5: newtoy: please please give us a 4+ player option! 6: newtoy: please please rip off Risk or Axis and Allies next!
Enjoy it a lot

However, I sure hope the game is not the reason for the rise in spam that I've been getting.
Crashes and text notifications don't work
StealthDawg 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app crashes especially after you play a word. Really annoying. Also the text notification feature stopped working. It worked fine now not at all. I haven't received a text in over a week. Both with chess with friends and this game. What the heck newtoy?
Awesome!!
w.v. fan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game would easily get 5 stars if I was able to receive my texts. Not sure what happened, but I haven't received any notice on either program made by NewToy for over a week. I think my chess friends and word friends are getting frustrated on how long it takes me to make the next move. Otherwise, this game rocks. Another job well done! Would like to see it connect online as well in the future. For both games
loveeee ittttt

will give 5 stars when push notifications are available!!! we need push push push! :)
Good, but ads are poorly integrated
gtangjr 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
In fact, the ads are so blatantly, distastefully and inelegantly integrated that I am soured to the point of (1) refusing to buy the paid version as a slap back, and (2) immediately closing the program after each of my moves is registered so as to render the ads useless. I am a huge, avid fan of Chess With Friends and its wonderful implementation of such a classic game. There are ads in that game, yes, but they are seamless. With WWF, however, I was shocked to see the means by which they chose to spread the advertisers' messages. It genuinely takea away from NewToy's product. I could see if they were trying to annoy you enough to buy the paid app, but they get paid for ads as well, so why not have the consumer actually enjoy the experience at the same time? For example, if ads were displayed when the app was opened, that would be fine. But after each move? Ridiculous. Enough on the ads. As for what would otherwise be a four-star game, here are the differences that would make it a 5-star affair (again, assuming "better' ads). 1. Shake to shuffle letters. 2. Reorganize letters when not your turn. 3. Fix email updates to display correct app. If you are avid in both WWF and CWF, you will notice that notifications do not differentiate between apps. Sometimes you will forget and have to open both apps to figure out where a move is waiting. 4. The ideal situation would be an app called "Games With Friends" that would serve as an aggregate for all your ongoing games in the NewToy universe. (Interestingly, the game lists within each app are already headed "Games With Friends".) Other than the size of the app, which is irrelevant if you have two separate apps installed anyway, I can't see any reason why this would not work. How awesome would it be if all movse for all games appeared in one place? 5. A rating system, or at least a W/L/D record. Accounts are already kept. No reason this shouldn't exist. 6. Keeping account email addresses private. 7. I said I wouldn't say it in this list, but again, fix the stupid ads.
Good

Really fun, but scrabble is the way to go. It takes to long to update and doesn't tell you the word point amount.

Esnoe 5.0 stars Version: 4.11
This is one of my best games on the IPhone. It is extremely addicting and is fun to compete with friends. I like the option to send you opponent a message like "you can't beat this word"! Or "Send me a word already"! The only problem I have with it is that there are no notifications. It would be extremely nice if there would be a type of "text message" that would appear telling you that your opponent just sent a word. Or, if notifications are impossible, than at least have a number by the apps picture to let the player know that it is there turn. Other than that, it is totally worth getting.
Spectacular
