Zynga picks up four more mobile gaming companies
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Jan 2012 07:00:00 UTC +00:00
Mobile/social game giant Zynga has made four more acquisitions in mobile gaming, having already picked up quite a few iOS and mobile development companies in the past. This time around, the biggest pickup is a company from Germany named Gamedoctors, makers of the very popular ZombieSmash title. Page44 Studios is the second purchase. They did work on the also very popular mobile version of World of Goo (though Page44 isn't the actual developer of the original game; that's 2D Boy). Hiplogic and Astro Ape Studios are the last two purchases, each with their own libraries of a few mobile titles. Zynga is building up quite a library of mobile developers and their titles, though we're not actually sure why yet. Most of the developers Zynga has acquired haven't actually put many other titles out on the App Store. Presumably all of these developers are working on something, and Zynga will probably Read More
'World of Goo' Hits One Million App Store Downloads
Calendar16 Tue, 10 Jan 2012 20:17:08 UTC +00:00
Whoa! World of Goo [$2.99 / UHD], a game that we're always stoked to talk about, has hit one of those benchmark download numbers. According to developer 2D Boy, the physics-puzzler has hit one million downloads across the App Store and the Mac App Store. That's a lot of loving for an indie game that doesn't have a toy line. 2D Boy, as it usually does in its sales post, highlighted some interesting facts. Like, these, for example: about 69 percent of this million have come from the more expensive Universal version of the game, while 29 percent came from its regular version. The rest come from the Mac version, which in our experience, is every bit as delightful as the touch ones. World of Goo won our game of the year award in 2010. We highly suggest you join the million or so people and get in on this action. Read More
iOS, Android and Mac stats for World of Goo
Calendar16 Tue, 10 Jan 2012 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
World of Goo is a physics based game that's popular among kids and adults. It started off as a PC desktop game and transitioned to the Mac, iPhone and iPad. The company recently sold its one millionth copy on iOS and released some sales stats for its different platforms. Not surprisingly, the universal version for iOS is its top seller followed by the iPhone version, which together account for 96% of the game's Apple-based revenue. The Mac version comes in last with only 4% of the revenue. The app also launched on Android about a month ago, and sales are strong. The paid version has been downloaded 70,000 times, and the free version has topped 450,000 downloads. During its first month of sales, the iPhone version reached 180,000 downloads. 2D Boy claims it's not fair to compare the sales of the two platforms because iOS customers had to pay for the Read More

Posted 09/30/2011 at 3:00pm | by Susie Ochs Holy guacamole, it's practically October? October is tomorrow? Is this the fastest year ever, or what? As the leaves start turning and the days get shorter, it's comforting to know that some things never change -- like all the sales in the App Store. OK, technically those do change; they change all the time! Which is why we tell you about them, in Friday's Price Drop column. This week we'll help you work out, pig out, and then bliss out with one of the funnest games of all time. It may not be bikini season anymore, unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere where it's right around the corner, or you take a vacation somewhere warm for the holidays. But any time of year is a good time to exercise your way into better shape. FitnessBuilder for iPhone/iPod touch used to be $9.99, but Read More
World of Goo for Mac and iOS now on sale
Calendar16 Thu, 29 Sep 2011 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
World of Goo is a popular physics puzzler from 2D Boy that lets you build towers with blobs of goo. Using loosely applied principles of physics, your goal is to move the goo through pipes and into new levels. The game has an enthusiastic following and is available on a variety of platforms including OS X and iOS. 2D Boy is celebrating its 5-year anniversary today and has slashed the prices on World of Goo. World of Goo for the Mac is available for US$1.99, down from $9.99 and World of Goo HD, a universal iOS app, is available for 99-cents, down from $4.99. There is also a non-HD version for the iPhone and iPod touch that is on sale for 99-cents, but as 2D Boy points out, you might as well buy the HD version since it is a universal app and includes both the iPhone and iPad version. posted by Jonathan Kizer on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 4:36 am.   It’s not every year that a relatively small niche of a growing industry gets featured in a prominent book of world records, but that’s exactly what has happened. In this year’s version of the Guinness Book of World Records: Gamer Edition, many developers of popular games for iOS, and for more traditional platforms like the PC, have been immortalized in the pages of a book. The following iOS games are highlighted: The following are also given honors, but don’t exist on iOS (yet): The games that were mentioned were all considered “experiments,” given that they were developed on a much tighter budget, and often by first-time coders with a vision. Take Minecraft, for example: the game is now a phenomenom, but who could have guessed that a game with 8-bit, square graphics could thrive among today’s games like Uncharted, Call Read More

World of Goo Now Available For iPhone and iPod touch Users
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Apr 2011 18:43:00 UTC +00:00
The gameplay is very simple; you have to place the sticky goo balls together in order to make structures. The goal of each level is to get a certain number of sticky goo balls to a pipe, which will suck away the goo balls when they are close enough to it. Getting them there, across chasms or through other obstacles, well, that’s the challenge. Here’s the official description of World of Goo courtesy by iTunes App Store: Beautiful and surprising, the millions of Goo Balls who live in the World of Goo are curious to explore - but they don't know that they are in a game, or that they are extremely delicious. This is the FULL award winning game, now on iPhone and iPod Touch. Drag and drop living, squirming, talking, globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins, and giant tongues. posted by Trey Trawick on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 7:32 pm.   Originally submitted by Jacob World of Goo has just been updated with universal support, bringing the lovable blobs of black tar-things to the iPhone and iPod Touch. If you’ve never played the PC or iPad version, be prepared to spend hours building elastic bridges and structures to reach the safety of a Dr. Seuss-like vacuum pump. The game is slightly pricey at $4.99 [iPhone-only version is $.99 for 24 hours], but is worth every penny. If you already own the iPad version, just update through the App Store for extra-mobile playing. World of Goo HD is now Universal! Buy once, play on any of the following devices: iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3rd gen, iPod Touch 4th gen. [iTunes] Thanks Mitchell209! Read More
Metacritic now charting iOS games
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Mar 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Gaming review aggregation site Metacritic has posted that it is now charting for iOS games through its service. The site has long charted movies, music and video games as an overall average of all the scores found online (out of 100), and now it's going to do the same thing for iOS games. Metacritic will do this by aggregating all of the scores found online with a weighted average and assigning a score out of 100 to each title in the system. You can see the main iPhone page right there -- Tiny Wings is highly rated as a new title, and on the overall list, World of Goo leads the way, with iBlast Moki right behind and a good mix of games on down the list. As you'd expect from a list of iOS games, the titles are all over the place, from bigger studio releases to tiny indie downloads. Read More

World of Goo Sells Like Hotcakes
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 18:30:22 UTC +00:00
By Timothy Smith on February 10th, 2011 2D Boy learns and shares some valuable lessons about developing World of Goo for iPad The developers of World of Goo recently posted a really in depth article that not only reveals its sales record for the first month, but also lays out an in depth overview of their experience with the App Store and the iOS platform. The game has sold an impressive 125,000 copies. That is quite an achievement considering it only sold 68,000 Wii copies and 97,000 PC copies during its best months on each of those platforms. This makes the iPad version of the multiplatform game the fastest selling version. The article also presents some interesting facts about their pricing scheme, promotion campaign, and how they tailored their development process to better suit iPad gamers. Overall, the game received fairly high praises (check out our review here), but interestingly enough, Read More
Drop whatever you are doing and head over to the App Store right now. This is not a drill. There are some pretty crazy Valentine's Day sales going on right now, but this... this is beyond crazy. World of Goo HD [Link] for the iPad, the same World of Goo HD that we gave a glowing five star review to and chose as our 2010 iPad Game of the Year, is currently being sold for just under a dollar. We thought World of Goo HD was a bargain at its original price of $9.99, and a must buy when it dropped to $4.99 last month, but at 99¢ you should basically just shift into "click buy button" mode. If you still need convincing, there is a forum thread full of positive impressions from our members. Honestly though, when a game that is the caliber of World of Goo HD can be Read More
2D Boy, Indie-Entwickler von World of Goo, analysiert seinen Erfolg in Apples App Store.
2D Boy Shares Its Thoughts On 'World of Goo' Post-Launch
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 22:46:07 UTC +00:00
If you’re a fan of playing App Store QB at home, then this World of Goo [$4.99] post-mortem piece is definite must-read toilet material. In the blog posting, game creator 2D Boy talks about the sales and problems with keeping our GOTY at the top of the charts and even takes the time to discuss points of design users weren’t fans of, the promotion of the game to press, the release timing, and its overall observations about the project. I’m still in NFL mode, so here are some highlights: ON PRICING: 2D Boy timed the release of World at Goo, to the game’s detriment, so it would be featured for the two weeks that it was. The plan was always to price it high and then go low later, but as you’ll read in the article, you’ll find that the chart lift from price slashes isn’t all that it’s cracked up Read More

In late 2008, when App Store gaming was still fairly new, one title that we really liked was RealArcade's Tiki Towers [99¢/Free]. It was a bridge building physics puzzle game that took more than a few cues from World of Goo, but back then World of Goo was not available on iOS and Tiki Towers provided a similar experience that was executed well with cute graphics and clever level designs. Since that time we've seen additional titles in the same vein like Moonlights [$1.99/Lite], Bridge Odyssey [$4.99/Lite], and of course the official port of World of Goo [$4.99] for the iPad. That hasn't stopped RealArcade from releasing a sequel, however, and more than two years later we now have Tiki Towers 2 [$4.99]. It doesn't stray too far from the formula of the original, and like any good sequel it builds upon its solid gameplay foundation by adding several welcome enhancements. Read More
App Review: World of Goo

posted by Joe Rossignol on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 7:15 pm.   Developed by 2D BOY, World of Goo (iTunes link), $9.99 USD (currently on sale for $4.99), is a physics-based puzzle game in which the player must lead a group of Goo Balls into a pipe and out of the level. World of Goo has already been a huge hit with its Windows, Mac and Wii versions. Being the year’s most anticipated iPad game, does it live up to all the hype that it’s received prior to its release? Well, here are my thoughts. Before discussing the game’s Gameplay & Controls, I will first briefly talk about my first experience with World of Goo. I had originally played this on my Mac and it was a great game. However, I never played it a lot or got addicted because of the controls. The main reason why I stopped playing Read More

I have been waiting for this one to arrive since the iPad launched. Worth the wait. Worth the price. Worth your time. Exactly what I had hoped for.
One of the best games of all time.
10th Row Films 5.0 stars
World of Goo is more then just a game, it occupies that rare space that can only be defined as an experience. It is completely immersive. The soundtrack is grade A. The kind of thing that I enjoy listening to on my iPod. The art is beautiful and well crafted along with some wicked level design. World of goo is one of my favorite games of all time and I said that long before the iPad version was released. Now with touch controls on the iPad the experience has come into it's own by finding the controls that the game was really made to have. I can't imagine being disappointed in world of goo. It may be a tad pricey but it is worth every penny.
My favorite game ever!

Loved this game on PC and have actually beat most of the levels multiple times. The iPad version is even more fun since it adds a new level of difficulty with touch coordination. Listen up! I don't write reviews, but this is important! This game is AMAZING!!!! 2D Boy got screwed by pirates when this game was released on PC, don't punish them again. BUY THIS GAME NOW! I bought the Wii version, I bought the PC version, and now I am buying it again. 2D Boy is a VERY small independent studio, and they need your help. Hopefully the app store will bring them the rewards they truly deserve, and by supporting them, we maybe lucky enough to receive another amazing game from them. I for one, am sick and tired of seeing doodle this and doodle that. We NEED games like this, especially on the iPad. PLEASE! I beg you, PLEASE! Buy this game now. For $10. Don't wait for a sale. Pirates put these guys into chapter eleven bankruptcy before, now, let's help resurrect them, and hope that they grace the gaming community with another gem! Thank you 2D Boy for this masterpiece. I will continue to support you 'till the end. What are you waiting for? BUY THIS GAME NOW!! While you're at it, gift it to a friend as well!
Incredible.

A standout game that is very polished. Even if the gameplay doesn't win you over at first, it'll grow on you, guaranteed. It's also a visual treat in every level.
The gameplay is great, the music is great, the narrations are great...

Gameplay: 10/10Music: 10/10Controls: 10/10Replay Value: 10/10Value: 10/10Uniqueness: 10/10The Good:Everything about this game is great. I had never played the PC or Wii versions of this game so I don't know how it compares, but this game is just awesome. The music is great and really relaxing and goes well with the game. The controls are pretty responsive and there isn't much lagging. For $10, this is a full version of the game which costs $20 on the PC and Mac. This game certainly is unique and I have never played, (nor will I ever play) anything as interesting and unique as "World of Goo.". The latest updates fix all crashing issues and bugs and improve the controls drastically, so no more accidentally tapping time bugs or accidentally moving goo balls around. The game is universal so you buy it once and can use it on iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch. (FYI: This is - retina display version, and also a universal iPad and iPhone version). THIS GAME IS SO FUN!!!!! The graphics are beautiful especially on the iPhone 4's retina display and the iPad's large screen, and overall, the experience is amazing. I am proud to be in the top 100 on the World of Goo leader board (RAPFOA1) and would love to be in the top 50. Thanks for an amazing gameThe Bad: Two years in the making, and still no new levels, but don't get me wrong, there still are a lot of levels. An update adding another level pack would be good. The Verdict:"World of Goo" is a very unique game that certainly will not be forgotten. It's gameplay, while not flawless, is very close and will keep you entertained for a short while. The "Corporation Mode" adds replay value to the game after you beat the Campaign. The game is quite hard, which I appreciate, but some might get frustrated with. This really is a "love it" or "hate it" game, but I, (and most of the other reviewers) love it. For $5, it is a little pricey because after all, you could buy Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Pocket God, Doodle Jump, and Angry Birds Seasons for that price, but if you have 5 dollars to spend and love to be challenged, then this is a perfect game for you. It's not so much that this game isn't worth $5. It is. I would pay $10 for this game and in fact I did when I bought it. And the universal support part is awesome. So the verdict is: If you have an iPad and/or iPhone, buy this game, and if you don't buy an iDevice, and then buy this game.
Way overhyped, cumbersome and not even HD

I just couldn't find much to like here. It takes excessive persistence just to figure out how to navigate the menus. I guess I'm in a minority here, but I just couldn't squeeze any actual fun out of the gameplay. And having your finger block your view of what it is you're manipulating is a seriously broken mechanic. And, dude, charging extra money for the "HD" version, which isn't HD on the iPhone 4: really not cool.
Oozing with style!

Don't you hate app reviews with lots of superlatives?Having said that, this must be absolutely the most artful game in the app store. Its well balanced game play provides many days of enjoyment, challenge and frustration!Just when you thought you'd seen every variation of physics game, along comes World of Goo to raise the bar.So, if you're one of the few who do not already have it, just get it!
A game for thinkers

Keep craching
JF95310 2.0 stars Version: 1.4
i love this game but unfortunately since the last update of iOS the game keep craching after 2 minutes or right before the completion of a level, that is pretty annonying. I repeat I love this game, but since a week I can't play in good conditions... Please do something :(

My 6 year old discovered the game and was quickly able to surpass levels I'd almost given up on. Once u figure it out, it seems usually easy but not if before u are able to achieve the goal. Graphics are very cool, ,multitude levels keep it interesting.. I highly recommend it!
update
