TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Hero Teams
Calendar16 Mon, 25 Jul 2011 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Hero Teams is a turn-based action strategy title for the iPhone, but you will probably recognize what all of that means a little better if I just say it's a lot like Worms. Basically, you put together a team of characters who get placed on a 2D map, and then you can throw, fire, and generally toss a bunch of different weapons at each other, blowing up the environment and your enemies until the best man wins. Unfortunately for Hero Teams, Worms already exists on the App Store, and since both games are just US99 cents, I don't have a lot to recommend this one over that one. But the look of the game is definitely different (it's sort of a hand-drawn thing, slightly above stick-figure level), and the levels are a little bit more close-quarters than Worms' were. The game also offers 50 different levels to play through, and Bluetooth Read More

'Worms 2: Armageddon' DLC Hits The App Store Today
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Nov 2010 13:33:00 UTC +00:00
Worms 2: Armageddon [$4.99] is getting a bit bigger today. Developer Team 17 has just released a new expansion for the title called "Worms 2: Armageddon Battle Pack" across PSN and the iOS. The content, which is available on the App Store for $1.99, is packing new weapons, a new campaign, and a few new features. Specifically, Team 17 says that it adds a total of 30 new deathmatch levels, a new "Warzone" theme, a game-style called "Forts Pro," and a bunch of new weapons and items including "termites, ferrets and worship statues." The heftier PSN version of this update will be getting one more feature, a "Body Count" mode which pits you against an endless horde of enemies. To be crystal clear, we wouldn't suggest the average App Store hawk to go and grab this simply because Team 17 supports the title. In our original write-up of the game, we've Read More
'Worms 2: Armageddon' Launches Into the App Store
Calendar16 Wed, 27 Oct 2010 11:30:02 UTC +00:00
In July of last year, Team17 released their classic artillery battle game Worms [$2.99/HD] onto the App Store. It was great to see such a beloved franchise hit iOS devices, but unfortunately the game was plagued with a number of problems. Performance was subpar even on a then-new and more powerful iPhone 3Gs, and fans complained of certain missing weapons and lack of online play. The game was updated a number of times which resulted in much improved performance, but the promise of additional weaponry and online matches never actually materialized, though they did add a very nice Bluetooth multiplayer mode to the game. Now Team17 has just released Worms 2: Armageddon [$4.99] to the App Store, and it essentially feels like what the first game was always meant to be. There is an incredible amount of weaponry in Worms 2, and local multiplayer with up to 4 players or 2 Read More

Steam Wars in Review – Steam-punk slam!
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Mar 2010 07:27:54 UTC +00:00
One of the earliest game genres ever dating back to 1980 and the Apple II computer were turn based artillery games. They have gone a long way since then with the famous Worms series being the true pinnacle of evolution that set the bar for many years. It’s no wonder  the genre has seen numerous reinventions on the iDevice – from the legendary WORMS (iTunes) reincarnation of the 3D Iron Sight. And today I’m going to review Steam Wars – a steam-punk look on how the genre should be approached. Feel free to discuss this review of Steam Wars in our forums. Steam Wars is not exactly a canonical artillery game. Instead of a 2D landscape the opponents battle it out on small 3D planets. And I DO mean planets – they are spherical and you can easily end up walloping yourself on the back of the head if you overshoot your Read More

There are few iPhone games that I will immediately buy. Most of the ones I do, however, are the classic games I played as a teenager. The iPhone/iPod touch is more than powerful enough to handle these games and it seems that there are many people like me who are keen to experience these classics again. So, here’s a roundup of modern ports of classic games. Only official ports of classic games are detailed here — clones and the like do exist but I had to draw a line in the sand. I’ve also included links to Wikipedia for those interested in the history of the games. The Video Arcade is where mainstream gaming began, and there are plenty of original ports from this era to re-live your youth shoving coins into cabinets. I’d still like to see BubbleBobble make an appearance here to completely satisfy my urges. Release Year: 1978Original Read More
Upcoming 'Wizard Warfare' Video Explained
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Jul 2009 20:37:27 UTC +00:00
Some videos have been circulating around the Internet and our forums of Sugar Devil Studios' upcoming game, Wizard Warfare. Aside from some great concept art, some cool looking screenshots, and a few mysterious movies, their web site doesn't have much information on it either regarding the actual gameplay. We got in touch with Niamh Kenny, one of the Wizard Warfare team members and got him to explain the game. Wizard Warfare is a turn-based artillery-style game similar to Worms [App Store] or Star Hogs [App Store] set in a fantasy environment with magic spells like "Flame of Desolation" and "Wanton Cruelty" instead of bazookas and missiles. Players will be able to play as one of six wizards and battle across five full 3D arenas using 33 different spells. Also included is a two player mode. Kenny sent us this video of a single turn in Wizard Warfare: Here is what is Read More
Worms Review: Should It Remain Underground?
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Jul 2009 09:30:26 UTC +00:00
Worms finally arrives for the iPhone! Does it make momma and poppa versions proud? Run for cover as the original, award winning turn-based strategy game WORMS™ hits the App Store! With a selection of single player battles, up to 4 player multiplayer mode and plenty of ways to customize your team, Worms™ is high on entertainment and replay value! My Take I’d really like to say good things about Worms but sadly, at its current state, I cannot. This one feels rushed and is in need of extermination of all the nasty gremlins that programmers and designers point fingers at each other over.  Now that I got that off my chest, I did find an area of the game worth playing, and I did like it, but the games mechanics and lagging (especially on the tap to continue screen) just kill it for me. And then I was asked to review Read More
Team17 completely blew it with Worms for the iPhone (iTunes link). I was running around the house screaming my head off like my team had just won the Super Bowl when I found out Worms was coming to this handset. When I finally got to playing it, it was as though the clock was reset to 0:10 left and the opposing team just hit a last-minute field goal, crushing my hopes and dreams. That’s not to say the game didn’t have its pluses – it’s still Worms after all. But I will say that the game was riddled with various performance issues, drawbacks and inconsistencies that will undoubtedly infuriate any Worms fan. Those who never enjoyed the classic turn-by-turn strategy series known as Worms: stay away from the iPhone version. Stay far, far away. For people like me, who long to relive on the iPhone their childhood love affair with the Read More

Worms
Calendar16 Mon, 20 Jul 2009 06:21:01 UTC +00:00
Worms is definitely one of the most requested titles that people wanted on the iPhone. Users all over wanted to get their fix of the turn-based mayhem created initially by the game Scorched Earth and honed to comical perfection by the PC game Worms. Well now the game has finally been ported to the iPhone and iPod touch and I must say, I've really never been more disappointed in a game. With all that could have been accomplished and the wonderfully gameplay that could have been achieved, Team 17 has seemingly decided to slap users in the face by providing a game that does not offer online multiplayer and struggles with framerate issues constantly. All of the amazing fun that was offered on the game before, like being able to connect computers or hop online and play a skirmish is gone with the port to the iPhone. Users can only play Read More

A bad porting to iPhone of the excellent WORMS
mrg80 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sorry Team17 but I'm very disappointed, why ?
Could be better.
Tom Anthony 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Really buggy controls and gameplay. I was really looking forward to this game coming to my iPhone, but now I wish it hadn't. Not worth the $5 for a crappy port.
Good/Fix all bugs
Iphonlvr 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have a 3g phone and it's Lina laggy. It needs tweaks on almost everything you can do. If you can fix all the little blips, this will be a grade "A" game, worth 6 stars out of 5. Till then you get 3. Please come out with a FIRM/COMPLETE update!!
Disappointed long time fan :(
adryy 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was expecting this game sience last year when rumors came up about worms. Now i'm so very disapointed! IT's VERY SLOW! you should optimize it to make it run smoother. There are iphone games with superior graphics that runs much smoother. There are no missions. Why?!?!?
Disapponted
Shinji01 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was looking forward to this but I am crushed. Really bad framerate that leads to choppy game play, no wifi or 3G multiplayer (not even adhoc), and just seems like a bad port. Scale is way too large on the battlefield as well for an iPhone display so worms appear to be dots at times. Please don't spend your money, or get Space Hogs instead. Shame on Team 17 for putting something like this out, should have been 0.99 cents.
So-so.
DenNukem 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
First, the game is dimming screen every turn for a few seconds. This is seriously bad - would you like if your laptop screen would suddenly change brightness on and off? Yuck.
fixes needed
Stevo ---- 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
•lag needs to be fixed •needs to be zoomed in more •needs missions •bluetooth and online multiplayer needed fix this and this will be the best game ever
Unplayable
miswit 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I wish I had waited to see reviews before I bought this game. You can't zoom in close enough to tell what you are doing. The controls are terrible. Basically, I wish I had my money back.
Very slow
hnsca 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I cannot play Worms on my 3G because it very slow. What's up? Deleted till next update.
Wished it was more
Nixul 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love worms and was excited to hear about worms for the iPhone, but this iteration of the series is just barely playable. I'm hoping to see some significant updates to this, but for some reason I doubt there will be. Until that time(if it comes) I have to rate this game poorly.
Not a very good release.
glmilton 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Like most of the previous reviews I found the game to be very sluggish due to the lag. The screen is mostly wasted space since you can't zoom in far enough. Hopefully they will fix this stuff with an update and I can change the review. For now though I have to give it 2 stars.
Sigh
Markdajew 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was so happy when I saw this game in the app store today. But when I got it I was sadly disappointed. The game runs slow and the zoom is pretty bad. Hopefully they update it soon. I'm giving it a 3 stars cause its worms=] 5 stars if updates
unplayable on iPhone 3G
wackybit 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was looking forward to having worms on my iPhone but it is too slow, it lags and freezes like a windows computer! I think it would work fine on the 3Gs but what about the rest of us with older iPhones? please allow an option to turn off some graphics capabilities so we can play it
Good ....but
Ctm3 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Controls are IMO clunky need to be better otherwise great fun
Almost there
AclockworkO 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The is so close to greatness yet so far away. Firsts, the good: gorgeous graphics and animations, good sound effects, seems like there is a lot to do and a lot of replayability. Now for the bad: controls need a lot of work and game is a bit unresponsive yet still playable on my first gen. IPod touch. The problem with the controls is that it's pretty hard to move and jump at the same time. I think an on screen d-pad is needed. Next, the draggable crosshairs is unresponsive so it's hard for precision shots. I'm really hoping that the responsiveness is improved and that we can zoom in a lot more. I also want more custimization for quick match like being able to choose the enviroment, choosing which weapons are available, and setting ammo. I hope that the developers take time to read the reviews and put a lot of effort into fixing this game. I hope that they don't abandon the game due to reviews and sales that are intially poor.
Outstanding!
josh.hofer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Seemless version for the iPhone. You can feel the hard work they put into this version. Great job Team17. I am looking forward to the updates that will add Bluetooth and Internet play. That will be the cherry on top! Even without that currently, still a 5/5 score. twitter.com/josh_hofer
Amazing Port of a great game!
HY8RiD 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you have played worms before buy this now. If you liked ishoot buy this now. Best game ever! Once this game supports better multiplayer options it's the only game I will play!!
already addicted...
MrKlippel 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
this is a awesome game.... hope they will include ota multiplayer soon,
Worst worms.
DavidR. 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Worms is one of my favorite games of all time. The new x-box version is near perfect, this iPhone version is far from that. The game almost feels unfinished. The controls are awful, the game is sluggish, and overall unsatisfying. Hopefully there will be some improvements soon to make this game playable.
Microscopic & unresponsive worms
AHAPXICT 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Bad controls ruin the whole experience. Just so frustrating  Plus, even if you zoom in, the worms are still very tiny. Neither enjoyable nor playable 
more weapons!
Kato760 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
needs more weapons
Poor controls
DaveStory 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Although slow and choppy graphics are annoying, my main complaint is with the controls. After much practice, the flip/backflip are still hit and miss - something deadly if you're on a cliff. My suggestion would be to put virtual controls along the bottom of the screen instead of using the whole screen as a control pad.
Wow. More than I expected!
PeterM11 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this game! It is so fun!
Wormage
lukewarmwalker 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great 1.0 release and I'm looking forward to the updates. The only thing I'd like would be able to do is to make fully customized games (not limited to one shot per round), mostly just for the hilarity of the action. Keep up the good work team17!
Great classic made for the iPhone.
hoopie29 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I forgot how great it was to play Worms. Just has fun on the iPhone as it was on the PC. Worth the price!!!!!
Great but could be better
jlemieux 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The controls are a little off, especially the scrolling around the level. It seems like a better solution could be made of using just one finger with double tapping to zoom in/out (with some intelligence built in to center on the nearest worm). Besides the panning/zooming controls and improvements being needed to the camera system it is an awesome game. The gameplay is great and hours of fun.
