App Smart Extra: Word Games
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Nov 2011 23:38:57 UTC +00:00
In last week’s App Smart column, I let the experts lead me toward a handful of great mobile games that I had somehow overlooked in recent years. There were puzzle games, kids’ games and shoot-‘em-up games, but strangely, none of my sources mentioned word games. Let’s remedy that, with a couple of oldies and one new game that will give word lovers reason to call in sick tomorrow. That new game is W.E.L.D.E.R. ($2 on Apple), which is short for Word Examination Laboratory for Dynamic Extraction and Reassessment. It’s wordy. Get it? Players are given a game board of 64 tiles with random letters and blank wild-card tiles and bonus tiles, à la Scrabble. The trick is to create words by swapping letters, but if you use too many swaps, you lose. Start it, and watch the hours fly by. Scrabble players who are great at using one or two letters to build Read More
On this week’s bonus edition of The TouchArcade Show, a crew of three -- count ‘em! -- chat with indie games visionary and creator of Canabalt [$2.99], Semi Secret Software's Adam Saltsman. The conversation kicks off with a light discussion of Adam’s oddly elaborate sandwich and then into other much more hard-hitting topics such as the themes and ideas that went into, ultimately, the creation of Canabalt, what Adam offers the indie games community, and several of his other games including Zits & Giggles and Wurdle [$1.99], one of the first iOS word games to hit the App Store. You can download this episode directly or stream it via the links provided below or, hey, you can even subscribe to our fair podcast via iTunes or the Zune Marketplace. This is an awesome and honest discussion that I think you’ll like. We’ll be back, of course, with another bonus episode next Read More
Five addictive iPhone games to kill some time
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Aug 2010 19:30:00 UTC +00:00
When you're waiting on the subway, sitting in the bathroom, waiting at the doctor's office or otherwise experiencing some empty time, there's nothing better than a casual iPhone game. You can play right away, quit whenever you want, and keep building up those high scores. Some iPhone games are more addictive than others, though. For many reasons, these five keep me coming back. It could be the quest for new items and higher scores, the quick learning curve, or the great graphics, but each of these games has its own unique combo of attributes that add up to high replay value. Check out the list for yourself, and then point out the ones I missed in the comments. I just picked this fast little number up for free during a promotion (it's normally 99 cents), and I haven't been able to put it down since. In Mega Jump, you control a Read More
I was about to embark on a three-and-a-half-hour trek home to Connecticut from Maine after a beach weekend. I had two youngsters in the back seat and, my wife and I would quickly discover, no food. But I had gadgets, and I had apps. And I was about to find out if they could mollify an 8-year-old boy, Luca, and an 11-year-old girl, Juliana, more effectively than snacks. A little preview: if you have a BlackBerry, pack lots of snacks. An Android requires fewer, and an iPhone (or, better yet, an iPad) may completely replace road food, if you choose your apps well. My general philosophy is that staring silently out the window is one of the more rewarding uses of brain power. But when that gets old, the children’s bickering gets loud and you notice that two nearby drivers are engaged in highway texting (for real), philosophy does not help. Read More
The Internet has been good to surfers and other water-sports enthusiasts, who can check a webcam or online surf report before taking a futile trip to the beach. Smartphones beat a desktop browser, however, because they put the Web in your hands when you have a few hours of free time, a long board on the roof rack and you want to check for waves. And, at least for surfers, the iPhone trumps other smartphones. Take the Surf Watch app ($10), for example. The software isn’t available anywhere on the wider Web, and sadly for BlackBerry and Android users, it’s not available on their mobile platforms. Before explaining, a little warning: for people who have no idea how coastal buoy data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration relates to a favorite surf spot, this app will mean a slight learning curve. But if, like many avid surfers, you know which Read More
Top 10 Free iPhone Word Games
Calendar16 Wed, 12 May 2010 22:30:28 UTC +00:00
To say that here at Mashable we “heart” word games is as much of an understatement as saying the ocean is a bit wet. Fellow wordsmiths know there are few things better than a good game involving language, but with the App Store brimming with such offerings, which ones do you go for? To save you the trouble of sorting through the hundreds of options, we’ve spent a considerable amount of time searching, downloading and testing (hard life, we know) and we’ve narrowed down the best to a top 10 list. Best of all, we’ve focused on free games (although be warned a couple on the list fall into trial version categories) so with this list, and for the grand total payout of exactly zero, you will never be bored again. Period. This really is a taster app to try and get you hooked enough to fork out the $3.99 for Read More
Video App Review: Wurdle
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Oct 2009 05:44:40 UTC +00:00
Rating: 7 out of 10 Pros: Well thought out game. Not only fun but educational. Cons: After reviewing the word list you can come away feeling a little dumb. Overall:Really fun addicting game. 2 player mode is enjoyable as it test two minds. You can purchase  Wurdle from the App Store for $1.99. Read More
We had the opportunity to meet with Bight Games at WWDC to discuss their upcoming games coming into the App Store on June 18th. Bight Games is a mobile gaming company that was founded in 2004. As seems to be the story of many mobile developers, Bight Games started doing primarily contract work. While they tried to publish their own original IP to mobile devices, the realities of traditional mobile distribution made it near impossible. The iPhone, of course, has changed many of these rules, giving developers an opportunity to much more easily bring their own titles to market. Bight Games has two of these original iPhone games coming out on June 18th. Big Top 10 Perhaps most efficiently described as "Wurdle with numbers", Big Top 10 is a puzzle game that will debut at only $0.99. Similar to Wurdle [App Store], the game revolves around sliding your finger across the Read More

Great addictive Boggle game!
mrsunwoo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is definitely one of the best Boggle games out there. The graphics are neat and friendly. The interface is very intuitive. Just drag along the letters or shake to shuffle the tiles. It's very customizable. You can choose not only your play time and grid size, but also your own tiles (You can even pick your own images from your iPhone photo library!). High scores are kept online along with the longest words. I found the game very addictive. I'm playing it whenever I find time. At this price, this game is a steal!
Fantastic
Chronologist 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've loved Quordy since it came out, which offers a similar Boggle-type experience, but I have to say the feel and options of wurdle are far and above what Quordy currently offers. The various choice of grid sizes and times are great, scoreboards, I love the different tile themes (all of which are nice, as opposed to the type of games that give you many options but only a couple usable ones), but by far one of the best additions is the ability to shuffle the tiles with a shake. It keeps you from running out of options and just watching the timer tick by. I thought this would make the game too easy, until I noticed the point penalty for doing it, so it's not something you can abuse - good balance.
My features wish-list

Great little game. Here's my wish list for a future version:
My Favorite Ipod Game So Far
AshtonJ 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
the whole point of Ipod games to me is to be a fun way to pass some time. This game is addictive because the rounds are short so you want to immediately try to beat that score then the next and the next. You can adjust the round time to 1, 2, or 3 minutes. The grid can be from 4x4 to 8x8. It is easy to pick up three letter words you did not know existed for points so I usually set it to 4 letters minimum. It can be set at 3, 4, or 5.
Great game
blazer123 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fantastic word game.
Cannot be played on subway
Jonathan Jackel 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Lots of fun while stationary, but constantly shuffles the tiles on the relatively smooth-riding DC Metro.
Great game!
attitudex4 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fast moving. I love boggle and this is a great way to take it with you!
Fun, if it only worked
Olvenskol 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'd love this game if it were playable, but on my phone it is not. No matter how still I hold the phone, the board "shakes" to a new board multiple times a game - usually as I'm tracing out a word. Unfortunately, this feature does not seem to be something one can turn off.
Stopped the constant scrambling..
melanerd 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I bought this app and was really excited to play it, and when I started the first game I thought the incessant scrambling was an 'intro' of some kind. I have the 16gb iphone 3g, and I've had absolutely no problem with any app, so I'm figuring it's not my phone. However, I turned the shuffle sensitivity OFF and it seems to have cured the shuffle issue for now. 3 taps will shuffle the tiles and I'm happy enough. I'm sure an update will take care of the problem and then I'll give it the full 5 stars..Love this game!
You'll wurdle while you wait
Latitudes 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love that this game is fast, easy, and still a challenge.
Who knew puzzles could be so fun?
iMac, therefore i think 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great quality game. Am in love with the fact that you can customize the tiles. I would love to see a longer time option. Three minutes seems to be too short, especially for the larger grids. I would like to see 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or even longer (like untimed).
Excellent game for an excellent price!
Technospaz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you've played Boggle, you would love this game. Even if you haven't, it's easy to pick up and difficult to put down. The gameplay is simple enough - create words by connecting the letters on your screen. The longer the word, the higher the score. The on-the-fly updating of your high scores / longest words online is also a great feature. This is a fantastic (almost unbelievable) price to pay for what is an addictive and mentally challenging game. A definite must-have for any iPhone gamer :)
Perfect!
The Clevelander 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Anyone critical of this game does not understand the concept of iPhone games. What a great way to spend time while you're waiting for a flight, waiting at the dentist or even when you're sitting in the intensive care unit with your mom!
The Perfect iPhone Game
jkharden 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game rocks all of the cool features of the iPhone! I love how Wurdle integrates my photos, the touch screen and the accelerometer into the gameplay. It also let's you post and compare high scores online. It has lot's of customizable features and is totally addictive to boot. I highly recommend.
Love it!
Tcat5309 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is my favorite game! I love boggle and any word game..... This is hours of entertainment for me! Thanks for adding the possible words, makes this game awesome!
Can't stop Wurdling!
mrkaplan74 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great fun! For people who love words, there's nothing else like it! Its quick! Its like a new game every time you play! Very Addictive!
Worth Every Penny!
Lame without sound 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Title says it all! No complaints!
Beats them all, but needs two things...
Coloursound 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
First, let me just say that Wurdle is by far THE best word search type (boggle style) game in the app store. I have a few of them, and this one is TOPS.
Yay
God Loves Liz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
My favorite game app. It's the only one I've paid for and SO worth it! I love the new feature that allows you to see all possible words at the end. Thanks Wurdle ppl!
Great game
CPElizabeth 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Love the game but don't see how to change grid size, or the timing... It says it can be done but How? Why not an endless option?
Not bad
aalhumedi 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thanks
Boggle on Steroids
dancelikeithurts 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is exactly as it sounds -- Boggle, going up to an 8x8 grid. That's great and this is a very good rendition of that, I would ask for only one (simple, I think) thing more in an update -- the possibility of playing without a timer. Of course, those scores should not be submitted online, but it would allow the player to enjoy a particularly interesting board at leisure.
Wonderful app!!!
Vilcheck4 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
For all you boggle buffs and wordsters. This is a great app!!! Great layout and very addicting. The price is well worth the purchase and highly recommended. You won't be disappointed.
Finally...
Random Traveller 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A game that is polished, fun to play, and doesn't feel like it is pigeon-holed onto the iphone platform. Excellent work! Lots of fun!
Great game! Alot of fun.
Thrashramy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Must buy, have gotten much enjoyment so far.
Junk update
ffattbboyy 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
All my 'longest words' and high scores are gone and I have to fill out a form to play normal. I understand the more practical layout but it looks cluttered. I want back the game I paid for instead of this new one that has been forced on me. I don't want to be part of a online club, I just want to play and track my own progress. I think that the update was sneaky in its lack of disclosure.
Boo 2.0!
Peter.G 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Lost all my high scores. Finger tracking is now really slow on my first gen iPhone. Required to get an on-line account to save local high scores? Why? When in airplane mode it still tried to connect on-line, obscuring part of the play field with an "uploading" message. Thanks for ruining my favorite game. Glad I still have the previous version on my computer.
This update blows
p. picasso 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
gone from 5 stars down to 1 star with this update. it's now clunky, slow, and what's with having to fill out a form everytime? no ease if use, just a pia
Don't upgrade
Dpgeek 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Original game was great - my favorite. After the update: lost my hi scores, longest words and finger tracking is so slow the game is unplayable despite multiple reboots. Lots of others with the same experience. FIX IT!
Don't update....... ;(
Trip5o 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
This was one of my favorite apps. Now all of my high scores are gone. My wife and I have been playing this game for months and now its all been wiped clean. I cant believe the developer did this. On top of the scores being gone, you now have to "log in" everytime you want to play! Such a pain in the a*s! Shame on you semi secret, fix it... NOW!!!!!!
Why fix what ain't broke
Thinwithin 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Worked great until new "update." Now doesn't work at all.
Re-install your old version!!!!
Thickhair2112 1.0 stars Version: 2.1
Guys and gals - at least on the PC you do NOT instantly lose your previous version when you backup with a new version. The OLD version is simply transferred to the PC's trash folder. Open your trash after updating your Touch or iPhone and you'll see the old apps that got updated. Simply slide them back into the iTunes "mobil apps" folder (after deleting or moving the new version), delete the new version off your phone or touch and it will then re-install the old version. I now "back up" most of the apps by simply copying the "mobil apps" folder but you don't really need to. Don't empty your trash until you check it after an itunes backup. Just grab the old versions that are now in there and keep them safe until you know you like the new version.
