Hands on with AnyPlay: Live Comcast video on your iPad
Calendar16 Sat, 04 Feb 2012 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Haven't heard of AnyPlay? That's not surprising. It's a small initiative slowly being introduced by Comcast into select cable markets. With it, you can watch live television over your home network on your iPad. So if your spouse is hogging the HDTV during your CW night, you can watch Supernatural using your local Wi-Fi. (Cablevision and Time Warner have similar apps on the App Store now.) AnyPlay consists of two parts: there's the standalone box ($10 one-time charge) and the iPad software, which is built into Comcast's existing XFINITY TV app. To get them to work together, you must sign into the app with your Comcast credentials and enable AnyPlay using the app's settings. On the hardware side of things, Comcast provides a media streamer box -- a Motorola unit in my case. Its job is to manage devices and convert cable signals into viewable video streams. Those streams currently must Read More
Comcast launches live TV on iPad
Calendar16 Wed, 11 Jan 2012 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
There's a number of live TV-streaming apps out there for cable subscribers, and Comcast has added its AnyPlay service to the mix. Part of the Xfinity TV iPad app, AnyPlay allows subscribers with Xfinity HD Triple Play to access live cable programming at home via the iPad. Those who are traveling can't access their cable but can utilize Xfinity's On Demand services. The service is restricted to the Denver and Nashville area for now with further rollouts planned. Xfinity's mobile app also just received an update with the ability to send free texts using the app and an Xfinity home phone number. Read More
Steve "finally cracked" the TV puzzle, says bio
Calendar16 Sun, 23 Oct 2011 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Author Walter Isaacson, who interviewed Jobs extensively has this interesting passage as quoted by Razorianfly: "He very much wanted to do for television sets what he had done for computers, music players, and phones: make them simple and elegant." "'I'd like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,' he told me. 'It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.' No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. 'It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.'" This will add to rampant speculation about Apple pursuing something beyond the Apple TV, which Jobs always referred to as a 'hobby'. I hope Apple moves ahead with it. I can't think of another consumer electronics device that would benefit more from an Apple upgrade. As it is today, handling a DVR, Read More
Cydle i30 is a digital TV receiver for iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 27 May 2011 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
Can't get enough of watching the local TV stations? Cydle has a solution coming for your iPhone. The soon-to-be-released Cydle i30 is a digital TV receiver "sled" for the iPhone. Featuring its own 1100 mAh battery, it'll snag that local PBS outlet, four Spanish-language stations, and three full-time religious channels that you just can't wait to watch. And yes, since your local network stations are required to broadcast their content not only over cable, but also through digital over-the-air broadcasts, you'll be able to watch just about any network show and enjoy all of the advertising as well. The advantage of the Cydle i30 is that it doesn't require a Wi-Fi connection or use your precious 3G data plan bits, and many times digital TV is about the only way you're going to be able to watch local sporting events or soap operas on your iPhone. Cable network apps such as Read More
Comcast’s Xfinity TV app for iOS has been updated to allow iPhone and iPod touch users to get in on the on-demand streaming video action. Before the update arrived late Wednesday, streaming was restricted to iPad devices. The update is a welcome one, but I can’t help but wonder why the iPhone always gets treated like a second-class citizen when it comes to streaming video. Time Warner Cable and Cablevision have yet to introduce iPhone versions of their streaming video iPad apps, and even Netflix’s iPad client predated the arrival of the iPhone version by around five months. The ABC Player tfor iPad remains restricted to that platform, and here in Toronto, where major networks CityTV  and Global both offer iPad apps, only Global also offers an iPhone version of the same content-streaming software — and its introduction only happened recently, months after the iPad app went live. Xfinity TV on your iPod, iPhone but Wi-Fi only
Calendar16 Thu, 19 May 2011 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
Version 1.5 of Comcast's Xfinity TV app for iPhone and iPod touch arrived on the App Store yesterday. The updated software allows Comcast customers to watch movies and TV shows on their iPhones or iPod touches while connected to any Wi-Fi network. Comcast added on-demand video streaming functionality to the Xfinity TV app for iPad in February. Since then, Comcast's library of streaming content has grown to include over 6,000 hours of video from 25 networks. The app, which also allows customers to remote control their DVRs and schedule recordings, has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times since it launched in November last year. The newly updated Xfinity app for iPhone and iPod touch expands the cable provider's goal to bring entertainment to practically any gadget with a screen -- televisions, personal computers, tablets and mobile devices. The launch of the highly-requested video streaming feature for Apple's mobile devices didn't Read More

Time Warner Cable iPad app lets subscribers view live TV
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Mar 2011 02:30:00 UTC +00:00
Do you subscribe to both cable and internet service from Time Warner Cable? If so, there's an iPad app you're going to want to install as soon as possible. On March 15, Time Warner Cable's new iPad app will become available, and it is the first app of its kind to give subscribers the opportunity to view live video on their iPads. Sure, Netflix and Hulu apps let you watch TV, but none of the content is live. At launch, the app is expected to host 32 basic cable channels in high definition. Time Warner Cable expects that number to expand soon. To use the service, you'll need to have your iPad connected via Wi-Fi to a Time Warner cable modem. Don't plan on using the app outside of your home; there's no streaming allowed to remote devices due to licensing restrictions. Unlike Comcast's XFINITY TV app for iPad, Time Warner's Read More
Fly or Die (TV Apps): IntoNow, Yap.TV, FIOS Mobile
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Feb 2011 16:59:11 UTC +00:00
Once you start watching TV with your iPhone or iPad, there is no going back. When the big screen becomes boring, you just switch to the smaller screen, where a whole world of Twitter, email, the Web, and apps stand ready to entertain your multitasking mind. In this week’s episode of Fly or Die, CrunchGear editor John Biggs and I look at three TV apps designed to enhance your TV watching experience, not distract you from it. We give each one a “fly” or “die” verdict and, as usual, a founder from one of the companies joins us as a surprise guest to subject themselves to our grilling. The three TV apps we evaluate in this show are IntoNow, Yap.TV, and FIOS Mobile. The first one, IntoNow, is like Shazam for TV shows. It lets you check into a show you are watching by simply listening to the audio signature of Read More

Comcast Is Bringing Live TV To Tablets
Calendar16 Wed, 05 Jan 2011 21:10:39 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on January 5th, 2011 Comcast is bringing live TV to the iPad. The future of TV on demand is undoubtedly live TV on any platform that you see fit. If someone wants to watch TV on their iPad, they should be able to watch anything they want at any time. Comcast today is taking the first step towards this TV watching future with their Xfinity TV app. Their press release is a bit tough to follow, but from the looks of it, Comcast is planning for customers to be able to watch “live news, TV shows and movies in their homes whenever they want.” While I’m not sure if this means that I can only watch live TV from selected networks (sports is curiously omitted), but anything live from the app would be an improvement and a step in the right direction. In the coming weeks though, Comcast Read More
posted by D. St. Charles on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 3:56 pm.   Originally submitted by News Bot Netflix has reached an agreement to stream content from the Disney and the ABC family of networks.  Previous airings of hits like Lost, Ugly Betty, and Scrubs will be available at launch, with a 15-day delay for new episodes of current shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Desparate Housewives.  The Disney Channel and ABC Family network will make available episodes of kid-friendly fare including Phineas and Ferb,  Wizards of Waverly Place and movie series Camp Rock and High School Musical. Comcast subscribers who use the conglomerate’s Internet services may be out of luck.  As pointed out in our forums, Comcast is fighting Level 3 Communications, the Netflix content delivery firm, from streaming to Comcast subscribers.  In preparation of a potential merge with NBC, Comcast is perceived to be trying to shut out Netflix, Read More
Comcast Xfinity App Turns Your iOS Device Into a Remote
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Nov 2010 17:30:47 UTC +00:00
The new Comcast Xfinity app is set to change the way you interact with your cable box for the foreseeable future. Sure your iPhone or iPad can act as a GPS, eReader, or game center but can you control your television with it? As of today, you can in fact, so long as you’re a Comcast Xfinity subscriber and own a compatible digital service. Or, you own an AppleTV, but that’s another article. Comcast has launched its new Xfinity app which allows users to browse digital content, watch On Demand videos and even change the channel right from their iOS device. How jealous will your friends be when you whip out your iPhone to peruse the cable guide and turn on the big game? Right now some folks may be wondering why they should care, considering the fact that they can just use their regular TV remote to browse their cable Read More
Cable giant Comcast has released its free Xfinity TV app for both the iPhone and the iPad (we first saw a prototype demo back in May). The app allows you to browse TV listings, including the massive Comcast On Demand library. You can filter shows by genre, network, resolution (SD vs. HD) and more. It also turns your iPhone or iPad into a remote. The main advantage here is having an on-screen keyboard, because as all cable and satellite users know, typing with a cursor is about as painful as it gets. You can change channels, and even notify friends with Comcast to watch a program at the same time. There are DVR controls and the ability to program your DVR when you are away from home, which is great. The glaring omission is the inability to stream content directly to the device. Comcast says that will happen in later updates. Read More

Xfinity app turns Apple iPad into remote
Calendar16 Mon, 15 Nov 2010 22:22:46 UTC +00:00
We saw early builds of this months ago, but Comcast has finally released the Xfinity app for the Apple iPad and it turns your “magical” tablet into one awesome remote control. According to the company, the new Comcast Xfinity Apple iPad app enables: Browse and discover video content from either TV listings or selections from the On Demand library in a rich user interface with colorful poster art and details. Use it as a TV guide so, in just a few finger taps, users can find what to watch by reviewing their TV listings and change the channel in real time. Program their DVRs to record TV shows, series and movies so they never miss their favorites. Sort content based on different filters like Networks and Genres such as Movies, Kids, Sports, or by HD content. Search by keyword or by title A-Z in TV listings or On Demand. Watch movies Read More
Comcast Releases Xfinity Remote for iPad and iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 15 Nov 2010 20:07:15 UTC +00:00
Posted 11/15/2010 at 12:07pm | by Cory Bohon Comcast is bridging the gap between your cable box and iPad with a new remote app called Xfinity. This remote application lets you not only link and control your cable box with your iPad, but will even let you invite friends to watch the same TV show you are watching. The application, which will work with both the iPhone and iPad, lets you browse your OnDemand content, search for content, and then switch directly to those channels right from your iPad. You can also schedule DVR recordings of your favorite shows, series, and movies. Anyone with the following requirements will now be able to say, "Good-bye" to their remotes: - Internet connection (Wi-Fi or 3G) - XFINITY TV or Comcast Digital Video service - Compatible cable/set-top box (for TV and DVR control) - Comcast ID or Comcast.net Email Address (and Password) The application Read More

Very Nice App
GigaMixer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Using the guide on this app is way better than current Comcast guide on the TV. Seeing all the cover art for the On-Demand movies and filtering alone, make this app worth trying. 10 X better would be the ability to watch live TV and On-Demand on my iPad.
Finally!
chiefcll 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
An easy way to browse tv listings and on demand - using an iphone or ipad!
Channel line-ups not accurate
Finale818 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app but my channel line-up isn't accurate. Doesn't display all my channels. I only get 2 line-ups to work with and they both are incomplete.
Dissapointing
Nashman222 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Until you can watch programs, this app is fairly useless. It also doesn't even provide the correct channel line-up for my area. A disappointment.
Error logging in
ed1chandler 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
... and it ain't me. I'd have thought this would be pretty high on the list of test cases. C'mon guys, fix it.
Could be better.
Spades1412 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
If I could view on demand content on my iPad, this this would be a 5 star review. This can be done from the xfinity website but not from the iPad. This app is just a big remote control.
Can't login
bucricket 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is probably cool, but I just get an error when trying log in!
Decent
lcornyn 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I want to view shows on my phone. Till then this isn't enough.
Nearly perfect
TWDubs 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
After using this for the last hour or so, I'm finally enjoying ondemand!! Channel changes are quick so is ondemand searching. Very excited that ondemand is coming to this app soon (per gizmodo)
Excellent!
JLP Seattle 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great way to browse for ondemand video, much easier than the traditional onscreen menu, and handier than having my laptop around. The channel tune works great too! Well done.
Getting There...
R. T. Rivera 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Comcast is certainly in the right direction but allowing access to content on the iPhone needs to come sooner than later.
could be better
Bucanero34 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Please let us watch complete shows, movies etc out device from our Xfinity account.
Nice try
Darin P. 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Falls short just like pretty much everything Comcast does. Nice idea, but 3 or 4 years late. Sharing content on other devices is where I expect this app should help. It doesn't. I can see content on a computer, why not an iPad or iPhone?
tv streaming coming soon
Nibio 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Tv streaming will be coming in December according to the press release.
Login error
Horse Tooth 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Error every time I try to login. Totally useless.
Nice, but...
KylesKeeper 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
First of all, if you can't log in, you're either an idiot or you don't have a compatible cable box. Nice app, but would be nice if we could set alerts for shows. Would be cool to get a push notification every time a new episode of my favorite show is about to come on.
Only for Motorola boxes
Stargazer418 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
To anyone with a Scientific Atlanta/Cisco cable box, this app only works with Motorola cable boxes. I'm sure this app works fine, but doesn't work with some cable boxes.
This app is rad
Cbonair 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very cool! Now I can have a smart remote to my tv.
Crashing
ItalianIrishDude 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Crashes when initially searching zip code on both my iPhone and iPad.
Awful
Opengl128 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Can't log in, errors out, useless.
Good Stuff!
lisidm 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I agree with many others when I say that this is a great step forward for Comcast over the existing OTT app. Can't wait to see where they go from here, streaming to iPad is an obvious next step!
Can't login...
Jordan821 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Saw this on engadget and downloaded right after. I can't log in though. Are we supposed to log on using the main account email or are secondary emails ok?
A joke
Mtnmedic64 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Installed fine and set up easily. Found a program in the listings and pressed "watch on TV" button, which changed the channel. Very cool. Unfortunately it hasn't been able do much of anything else. Certainly hasn't been able to change channels since. Piece of crap. Doesn't surprise me, given the source.
