You’ve got the new iPad, you have tried out your front facing camera with FaceTime, but now you realize that many of your friends don’t live in the iOS world. So, how can you video chat with your BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Phone friends? The good news is that there really are a bunch of options for video chatting with Android, Windows Phone and Windows and Mac PC users.  The bad news is that there aren’t, as of yet, a bunch of great options.   We will take a look at a good cross sampling to help give you some choices in the realm of video chat. The only caveat here is that you will need to pick an app tied to a service that your friends actually use or are willing to use. Easily switch cameras using the Skype app Fring is a popular Android video chat app that has Read More

As a bonus for this month, we've added a section with notable app updates and another featuring new tablet apps. New Apps for iPhone LeafSnap: Possibly the most ground-breaking app released in recent days, LeafSnap lets you identify trees by taking a picture of their leaves. Created by researchers at Columbia University, University of Maryland and the Smithsonian Institute, the app is like something you would see on TV, roll your eyes at and scoff, "as if that exists!" Yahoo Messenger Brings a Strong Video Chat Option to iOS
Calendar16 Thu, 19 May 2011 20:22:00 UTC +00:00
When Apple debuted the iPhone 4 with a front-facing camera it toted along a killer app that had been unavailable on mobile devices until then - FaceTime. Now users could do video chat from mobile devices and Apple was the only player in the game with that capability. Everybody else has been playing catch up. Skype quickly moved to add video chat, one of its staple products, and then added Qik Video Connect earlier this year. Now, Yahoo has gotten into the game with its new Yahoo Messenger app for iOS. The new Yahoo Messenger for iOS has been optimized for iPad and can do video and voice calls, text chat, presence, send SMS and share photos in real-time. Importantly, iPad 2 users can video chat to talk with PCs. As a communications app, it is a strong entry from forgotten source of innovation. The functionality of the Yahoo Messenger app Read More

Yahoo Messenger lets iPad 2 owners video chat with PCs

Yahoo! rolled out a new Messenger app for iOS that includes support for the iPad 2. The tablet-optimized app will let you make voice and video calls using the front-facing camera. Yahoo! Messenger has a wide install base, and you will be able to make video calls to any device with a camera and a compatible version of the messaging app. Besides video calling, Yahoo! Messenger will also send SMS messages for free. The SMS feature is a quick way to message to a friend, but you have to remember these messages come from your Yahoo! account, not your mobile phone number. Read More

Yahoo! Messenger for iPad is here
Calendar16 Thu, 19 May 2011 09:43:42 UTC +00:00
Yahoo! launched an iPad-optimized version of its iOS application. Presuming you already use Yahoo! Messenger on your iPad, no longer will you be looking at the scaled-up version of the iPhone app. The new universal iOS application is made to fully take advantage of the big screen Apple’s tablet rock. In addition to chatting with your buddies, Yahoo! Messenger also supports voice and video calls, as well as low-cost international calls to landlines or mobile phones with a Yahoo! Voice Phone Out account. Moreover, free SMS is also included and so is the ability to share photos and videos in real-time with other Yahoo! Messenger users. Finally, there’s the Windows Live Messenger support, allowing you to keep up with friends relying on Microsoft’s IM client (rather than Yahoo! Messenger). So what do you way – are you going to grab Yahoo! Messenger for your iPad or you prefer using a single Read More
There’s a new iPhone IM client on the block. Verbs, by #include tech software, is a simple and beautiful IM app that looks like it was designed by Apple itself. There are a ton of IM apps on the App Store (IM+, BeejiveIM, fring, AIM and Yahoo! Messenger to name a few).  I’ve used many, and honestly, most of them look pretty awful. I was so excited when I saw the Verbs design mockups several months ago, and the app recently received an update in the App Store that makes it definitely worth reviewing. While I’m not someone who constantly relies on instant messaging to communicate, I do see the benefit of having a solid IM app on the iPhone for occasionally hopping on Google Talk. The good thing is that Verbs has more to offer than just good looks… While the interface design of Verbs is stunning, it also packs some interesting surprises under the hood. Verbs Read More
by Samuel Gibbs on October 28, 2010 at 09:30 AM Yahoo launched its Messenger app with video calling for the iPhone a couple of weeks ago. It sadly omitted support for the forward facing camera that's available on the latest generation iPod touch. But all is not lost, touch fans -- Yahoo has just updated the app and corrected that oversight. Yahoo! Messenger for iOS now supports two-way video calling on the fourth generation iPod touch, matching the iPhone 4, as part of a free update. Hop on over to the App Store to grab the app. Yahoo! There was once a time when FaceTime was the only iPhone 4 video calling gig in town. Fring entered the ring first, but now Yahoo has joined the video calling party, with an update to their Yahoo! Messenger app. Unlike Apple's current implementation of FaceTime, Messenger allows you to video call over both Wi-Fi and 3G, but if that wasn't enough, you're no longer limited to iPhone-to-iPhone calling either. iOS to PC or Android is now also possible, making Yahoo! Messenger the first cross-platform video calling app to cover Android, iOS and the desktop. But how does it stack up to FaceTime in actual use? Read on for our quick test drive. Overall, I was a little disappointed. OK, it's novel to be able to video chat between a computer and an iPhone, but the small video combined with heavy lag was enough to make it not worth the effort between Read More

We’re keeping our eyes on three particular stories of interest today. Microsoft Unveils Windows 7 Phones Microsoft and its partners unveiled nine smartphones (and their accompanying ads) based on the new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7, at a press conference in New York Monday. Samsung and LG each announced two smartphones based on the OS: Samsung Omnia 7, Samsung Focus, LG Optimus 7 and LG Quantum; Dell unveiled one, the Dell Venue Pro; and HTC launched four: HTC 7 Surround, HTC HD7, HTC 7 Trophy and HTC 7 Mozart. Although none of the phones will have copy/paste capabilities until early 2011, there will be plenty of opportunities for gaming. Read More
By Staff, Monday, Oct 11, 2010 | On Sunday we told you that Yahoo! sent in their update to Apple for the Messenger app to allow for 3G video calling — well today the update is live in the iTunes App Store. Not only will you now be able to better communicate with others Yahoo! Messenger users on iPhones but you will be able to chat with anyone who has a front facing camera on their phones. Even bigger news than that is the ability to video chat between a phone and the computer version of Yahoo! Messenger. This brings a whole new potential to having the iPhone 4 as well as any smartphone with a front facing camera. Will you be downloading the newest update to this app? Does the potential for phone to computer video chat excite you? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! by Brian Read More
Oct 11th 2010 at 5:30PM The yahoo messenger site states that messenger for Mac does not support "video calling." It only allows for webcam conferencing. Therefor it does not work with the iPhone. I've tried it w/ Win7 and it works but the quality is really bad. I feel like I'm doing videoconferencing in the 90's. It looks like the window is 80 pixels x 60 pixels, but blown up to be bigger. Typo on your title. Messenger is spelled with only one "s." aim, skype where are you?! Does this not work iPhone 4 to Yahoo! Messenger for Mac? I can't seem to get it to make a video call between them. Nope. Tuaw should update the article to reflect that. The interesting part is this app is cross-platform, meaning Android, iPhone and desktop users can all voice and video chat with each other! Now if they only fixed it Read More

FaceTime Challengers Now Include Yahoo
Calendar16 Fri, 08 Oct 2010 12:29:30 UTC +00:00
Posted 10/08/2010 at 4:29am | by J.R. Bookwalter Back in June, Apple spent a great deal of hoopla touting the new FaceTime feature of the iPhone 4 -- but the market for video chat is heating up quickly, and now Yahoo has lined up to be the next contender in the App Store as well as on Android devices. Reuters is reporting that Yahoo is planning to update its popular Yahoo Messenger app to enable built-in video calling, according to the company’s vice-president of mobile for the Americas, David Katz. Yahoo’s video chat will be available as a free app for both the iPhone as well as Android devices. Yahoo is clearly taking aim at Apple’s new FaceTime, which is already being challenged by rivals such as fring and the recently released Tango -- although neither of those companies have the brand recognition of Yahoo. What all three companies do have Read More
FaceTime is one of the most visible features of the iPhone 4, with much of the advertising for the newest iPhone showing off the emotionally-rich video chat capabilities that FaceTime provides. But if your friends are on another network or don't have an iPhone 4, it's impossible to use your phone to video chat with them. Yahoo! and T-Mobile would like to change that. T-Mo announced earlier in the week that an upcoming Android phone, the HTC Slide, will come with two cameras arrayed much in the same manner as those on the iPhone. The Slide will also provide video chatting with any other phone equipped with two cameras, including the iPhone 4. Since FaceTime is an Apple-specific feature, how is T-Mobile going to do this? Through Yahoo! Messenger. The current iOS app doesn't appear to currently support video chats, but Yahoo!'s admission that the capability would be available for the Read More

Some of you may recall that last week, Yahoo! Messenger product manager Sarah Bacon had a few choice words for Apple regarding their app approval process only to find out that all of the delays were caused by Yahoo!, not Apple.  Bacon had to issue a retraction, stating that a lack of communication caused the confusion and that the update would be available shortly.  That somewhat controversial Yahoo! Messenger update has now officially made it through the approval process with flying colors. The Yahoo! Messenger v1.2.2 update is all about fixing features, not adding them.  The update supposedly fixed all of the login issues many users had complained about, along with app crash fixes, Buzz improvements, performance improvements, Push Notification sound changes, and  idle status removal, so now users will appear as available when signed in to the app but not actually in the app. Yahoo! Messenger is available for the Read More

Updated Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone “Pushes” AIM Aside
Calendar16 Wed, 22 Jul 2009 15:54:51 UTC +00:00
Yahoo announced today an eagerly awaited update to Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone that brings about support for push notifications, joining rival AIM. With the latest updates, Yahoo is continuing to push the bar (pun intended) and give AIM a run for its money (pun not intended). If you are new to chatting, the three major players in the market are AIM, Yahoo and Microsoft (what market are they not part of?). While AIM remains at the top of the mountain (offering great integration for MobileMe customers), rival Yahoo is making it harder for users to stay attached to AIM’s service. For those who aren’t completely satisfied with what AIM has to offer, Yahoo! Messenger is a great alternative or supplement and is a bit more robust, with support for adding users of Microsoft’s MSN Messenger service. Yahoo has been vocal about its dedication to the iPhone platform, and its support Read More
10 Instant Messaging Apps for the iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 15 Jul 2009 19:00:13 UTC +00:00
When push notification finally made its way to the iPhone, a lot of people were anticipating IMs pushed to their iPhone. At first, I scoffed at this idea. I’d always figured IMs were based around the “instant” part of the phrase, and someone pushing an IM to me might be disappointed if I don’t get back to them right away. Well, guess who’s been a big iPhone IM-er since 3.0 came out? Go on, you’ll never guess. Yep, it’s me. I’d like my crow with a side of au jus, and a loaded baked potato, please. First a quick word of warning: by no means are my comments here to be construed as any sort of a formal review. While I’ve tried to run all of these apps through their paces, I wouldn’t feel comfortable calling any of my comments a review — they’re more like first impressions. That said, while Read More

I have been waiting for Yahoo! Messenger to come up with a great app for the iPhone and iPod touch. This one is great! No glitches that I have encountered, it just syncs easily to your existing account. I am very happy with this app, and, unlike others IMing apps, this one is free!
Awsome

On the right track...

But why can't I message my hotmail contacts? Yahoo and Windows Live are supposed to be compatible, but this feature was obviously missed with this app. Without this, I can't message 3/4 of my contacts. This app will also be greatly improved when push notification is released with 3.0. This part had no affect on my rating because it is out of the developers hands.
Pretty good
SuperHaHa 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Would get 5 stars if u could add contacts, only one works. However, at least I could sign in , couldn't even do that on one connect
Great app
lordslug 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love the app. Some things I'd love to see is the ability to delete contacts via the app, also the ability to change my profile pic. As mentioned by another reviewer the ability to buzz someone would be a great addition. 
Nice but...

A yahoo! Messenger from yahoo! that's just that an IM client. Really good UI and nice add on to the other yahoo! apps. About everyone that's still complaining about no push notifications it's not yahoo's fault apple doesn't support push in the current firmware so stop COMPLAINING!!!! This app shows great potential and just imagine what this app will be like when firmware 3.0 is released. I simply can't wait. Great app better then that oneconnect and hope to see more add-ons and update in the future.
Works

Cowboys09 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Its good and all how it shows your avatar but you have to reset your account if you want to change your avatar. And it needs sound when you get a message so that you know that you got a message.
Only Landscape
XxLegendxX 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The app is GREAT but the only thing that it needs to be perfect is Landscape. Landscape mode allows you to type much easier. Please add landscape THANKS. Great App!!

Yeah... Now I can talk to my friends in other side of the world without staying up late at night just to talk them in ym because I have school in the morning and it's night there... Now I can ym them even when I'm in school so that means they're awake... Wee... And plus it works even if the one you're talking too is using computer!
Great application
Sunny sohi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0

Room for improvement
Go_Dawgs 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It works, and I'm glad to have it, but there is a lot of things that need to be improved upon...too many to actually go through and list, but the bottom line is I can instant messege with friends. I am hopeful that when apple releases 3.0 and push technology Yahoo IM will improve. All in all Yahoo instant messenger is a useful app that can be vastly improved upon. Totally worth the "free" download.
Yahoo Messenger
Ddtuonkiyfdvk 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's great. Just two suggestions 1: add landscape view, and 2: add ability to customize avatars. Otherwise the perfect messenger application. Thanks Yahoo!
Nice!
@pasq 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's about time! Not bad for a 1.0 version. The only thing it needs to get 5 stars is landscape mode. Why do so many developers ignore this on an iPhone app, especially when the whole point is to type and read???? I don't get it.
Great app, needs improvement.
PeterM11 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is a great messenger app. But it does have its flaws. I have compiled a list between a friend and I of everything we think is wrong with the app. If all of this stuff gets fixed it will be amazing!
Connection problems

Perfect Push
Zenon Tigerpaw 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Unlike my past review of Yahoo Messenger, I gave it a 4 stars cause of its lack of Push. Its a great messenger, no doubt, and is slightly designed better then AIM. Now with the new 1.2.1 (was supposed to be 1.2) update that includes Push and slew of other features we've been waiting for to make it as close to the desktop then other device. Now I can say this is the best mobile messenger experience ever.
PUSH IS WORKING! PUSH IS WORKING! PUSH IS WORKING! PUSH IS WORKING!
powermixx 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I just read a bunch of reviews with V1.2 that Push doesn't work. I just downloaded, tested and it's working for me. If this is your first app you installed with PUSH capabilities, you need to go to the PREFS and make sure Notifications is on. I had to do that for the AP Mobile app when I installed it (first push app I installed). I'm telling you push with this version works. I have a 3G. Very cool.
Push Notification works
Kullwraith 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
- Delete and download the Yahoo! Messenger application again to get the right version that supports Push Notification.
MSN contacts
pyh04 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Wish this app would let you see your MSN contacts like the desktop version does.
Cool. Needs some enhancements.
Mahurshi 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Push notifications! Finally! If you log in on the computer and log off, you will not get push notifications. You need to log in from the phone and close the app to reactivate push notifications. I wish it would default to push notifications no matter where you last logged in. It would be nice to have more options under settings as well. There seems to be no way to turn off the sounds from within the messenger.
Can't download w/o new iPod 3.0 OS
Cute Math 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.2
This new version is terrible! I can't believe that Yahoo has made it dependent on purchasing the 3.0 update in order to download their messenger ap! I have used it for 3 months and rated it a four star ap. I was happy with it except for the touchy horizontal/vertical feature, as noted in many previous reviews. I deleted and restored to factory defaults today, so I could reupload fresh copies of all my aps. I found to my great dissappointment that Yahoo has upgraded their messenger ap and now, you can not dpwnload it without first purchasing the new 3.0 OS for almost $10. I am so disappointed in Yahoo.
Won't connect
