August Trometer is a veteran iPhone and Mac developer -- along with his own stable of titles, he's also one of the developers behind the popular Yowza!! mobile coupon app, and the author of a book on web development for Apple's handheld device. He spoke not once but twice on the first day of the Voices that Matter iPhone developer conference in Seattle last weekend -- in the morning on "Designing a Killer UI" for the iPhone, and in the afternoon about what's new for developers in terms of code available on the iPad. After the second talk, he agreed to sit down with us and discuss a little bit of his thinking about concepts of UI design for both devices. In the interview below, he chats with TUAW about what developers can do to make better user interfaces for iPhone and iPad users, why he believes Apple had a plan Read More
Voices that Matter iPhone: "From iPhone to iPad" panel
Calendar16 Tue, 27 Apr 2010 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
To end the first day of the Voices that Matter iPhone conference in Seattle last weekend, a group of veteran iPhone developers sat down for a roundtable panel and talked about the iPad. August Trometer (Yowza!!), Brent Simmons (NetNewsWire), Kyle Kinkade (Tap Tap Revenge), Daniel Pasco of Black Pixel, Tim Wood of The Omni Group, and TUAW's own Erica Sadun were questioned by moderator Chuck Toporek about the differences between the iPhone and the iPad and a few of the pressing issues that both devices are likely to face in the future. Even though the panel ended the day (and all of the attendees and panelists were craving the eventual beer and pizza that would be available later in the evening), it was a lively discussion that offered both insight and frank opinions from these developers. 10 Essential Money-Saving iPhone Apps

by Luke Knowles is the founder of numerous money-saving websites including Coupon Sherpa, Gift Card Granny and Mr. Free Stuff. In 2008 Luke founded Free Shipping Day, now a red-letter discount date for online holiday shopping. Despite a recession allegedly in our rear view mirror, frugality remains a hot, dare I say trendy topic. Nowhere is that more evident than in the often expensive world of consumer tech. Those of you currently debating that iPad purchase know just what I mean. But remember, a one-time splurge could pay dividends in the long run if you do your homework. Take Steve Jobs’ previous technological wonder. The iPhone’s price tag might seem hefty, but just a cursory review of its money-saving potential might prove tempting to even the most fiscally conservative. Here are ten of our favorite apps for the frugal-focused. The first step to saving money is learning how to handle it. Read More
y Yowza!! — the free location-based mobile coupon application/service that comes from actor Greg Grunberg whom you may know as Heroes’ mind reader Matt Parkman — is adding Austin, Texas to the list of supported cities. Among the local businesses included in the update are the most popular places to eat and drink such as Eddie V’s Restaurant, Frank, Max’s Wine Dive, Odd Duck Restaurant, Roaring Fork and Saxon Pub; as well as clothing stores Secret Oktober and Gallery D, indie record store Waterloo Records and the Alamo Drafthouse movie theatre. In addition to adding a new city, Yowza!! also announced they’re out with the version 2.2. The main new thing of this release is support for custom, manually entered location. Apparently, users will need this feature when travelling and their iPhone’s location capabilities are turned off. In this case, they can manually enter a ZIP code. Now that I’m thinking, Read More
Planet of the Apps on CNBC – Quick Thoughts
Calendar16 Fri, 08 Jan 2010 18:07:47 UTC +00:00
Last night CNBC aired its ‘Planet of the Apps: A Hand-held Revolution ‘ program, and I got a chance to watch it after the BCS national championship game finished.  It was nice seeing the iPhone, the App Store, and the whole mobile apps arena get featured like this in an hour long show; it was fascinating to me to see how a ‘mainstream ‘ media source covered these areas. The vast majority of the show focused on the iPhone, App Store, iPhone developers, and studies done amongst mobile app users.  I ‘m a sad iPhone / mobile tech geek, so I actually made liberal use of the Pause button and took notes during the program.  Hit the jump for some of quick notes on what caught my eye during the program – Admob estimates that $200 million is generated each month from App Store sales. – A fart app got mentioned Read More
If you ever wondered just how much of an impact the iPhone may have had on the world around it, CNBC might have the answer. The network will apparently be airing a special called “Planet of the Apps: A Handheld Revolution!” that looks at how the release of the iPhone gave birth to a revolution in mobile technology. The show will feature a piece from “Heroes” actor Greg Grunberg, who describes his “second job” as an app developer (he helped write the Yowza! Mobile Coupons [App Store, free] application), look at the popularity and profitability of apps, interview app developers and examine how big a business apps truly are. “Planet of the Apps: A Handheld Revolution!” will premiere on Thursday, January 7th at 10 PM, and repeats at 1 AM. Yowza: A Video Interview with Heroes Actor Greg Grunberg
Calendar16 Fri, 20 Nov 2009 01:50:00 UTC +00:00
When Heroes actor Greg Grunberg tells you to download an iPhone application, you can't help but listen. Best known as television's mind controlling savant Matt Parkman, Grunberg demoed location-based coupon startup Yowza at today's Under the Radar Mobility Conference. Grunberg's iPhone app offers users deals from nearby stores, restaurants and gyms. Now that Foursquare has begun advertising location-based deals it'll be interesting to see if there will be overlap between the two companies. ReadWriteWeb caught up with Grunberg to find out what's keeping him out of the actor's studio. Read More

Five iPhone apps that can save you money
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Sep 2009 14:58:00 UTC +00:00
Keep BetterDeal on hand at the grocery store to figure out which size offers the best deal. As I often tell people, it's not the price of the iPhone that bothers me--it's the monthly fees! (Grumble, grumble, AT&T, grumble.) Alas, while there's no way to get around that $70/month minimum, at least I can use my iPhone to save money on other things: gas, groceries, books, DVDs, and even energy. Let's take a look at five killer apps that can help you pocket extra cash. I know a lot of people are partial to AAA Discounts, which serves up deals near your location. Great app, but only if you're a triple-A member. I'm also a fan of the suggestion over at Wise Bread to use Pandora instead of buying music, though why limit yourself to one music-streaming app? Grab Last.fm and Slacker while you're at it. OK, you've got my picks. Read More
Yowza! iPhone app makes coupon finding easy on the iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 12 May 2009 08:35:54 UTC +00:00
Actor Greg Grunberg, whom you may know as Heroes’ mind reader Matt Parkman, has created an iPhone app called Yowza! to allow users to find coupons for stores in their neighborhood. Users can search for coupons either by entering city name or zip code, or use nearby functionality which relies on iPhone’s location-based features (GPS or cellular triangulation). Once you find a coupon that suits you, you can easily retrieve it at the store’s register — cashier scans barcodes right off your device. New deals and stores are constantly added, and there are some deals negotiated specifically for Yowza! users. Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the application also has a feature that tracks how much you’ve saved, which is neat. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is Read More
Yowza
Calendar16 Thu, 07 May 2009 05:20:31 UTC +00:00
Yowza is a very interesting application that has become available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Created by Heroes star Greg Grunberg, the app is trying to change the way we use coupons and discounts in stores. We have all used a coupon at one point in our lives and if you shop a lot, chances are you have a whole booklet of the little pieces of paper. Yowza is an application that offers digital coupons that can be redeemed right from your phone, without the need to carry a wallet full of paper ones. The idea is that major retailers will sign on to their program and begin offering coupons for the masses. The app uses your location and then shows what coupons are available in the area. Using a coupon, users can also track their savings which are actually publicly hosted and the total savings of all Yowza users Read More

Great Idea! Needs more retailers though.
efice32 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This application is just getting off the ground, but it is a fantastic idea. There is tremendous potential here and once more retailers sign on with this app, it will be one of the easiest ways to save money out there. Great work guys!
Best. App. Ever. FINALLY!!
FreeLancer561 4.0 stars Version: 1.0

Amazing
DjinnAndTonic 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is amazing! Stores would be crazy not to jump on this, and I can't wait to see what stores you add next!
Very cool app!
AdamHurd 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Impressive speedy interface. Small but impressive list of participants at launch. Will definately stick with this and watch the list grow and deals get even better as yowza matures.
Great App!
BEJon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0

This rocks! Can't wait to see who you add next! Say Sweetwater Musical Instruments perhaps! :-) I see Guitar Center is coming.
Bleh.
anna_mcg 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been waiting for this app for a long time. I was so excited when Greg Grunberg announced it was released. But after I powered it on, it only gave me one coupon for one retailer in my area. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed. For the amount of hype, I'd figure they'd have more retailers lined up before they launched. I'll keep the app for now and hope to see more deals later.
Yow-maybe
unejeuneactrice 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I think this app has great potential, it just needs to broaden its scope. I was only able to find one store within a 15 mile radius of my location and when I checked other areas I frequent I found nothing. I realize this is only the first version of the app, I just hope that Greg and the others are able to follow through on what we're all hoping for here. If they do, it will definitely be a 5-star app, so far it's not quite there yet.
1 star for 1 store.
TheGavel 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Okay, this app sounds great. I would say it has to be used in a big city. Yet I live in one and the only thing is that when I logged on, it only had one store. Finish line. I noticed on the pictures of the preview on iTunes; it displayed stores like "Target". I have a Target, where are my savings? I'm standing in front of the door to target and,..... nothing. Oh and one last thing, why does it need my age and gender? Are we age and gender profiling now? Thanks guys, what if my Grandmother needed me to save something for her? or my Uncle ? Or my little niece thats 4? or possibly my Sisters baby? I'm pretty sure that three of those people don't need Finish Line shoes. I'm also pretty sure that my age should have nothing to do with me being able to look at ALL the savings. I hope this is not the case or the reason why you verified any of that information.
Severely lacking vendor support
Gr8ly Disappointed 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I live in Denver, and did a 15-mile radius search and the only thing that came up was The Container Store. Very lame! I deleted the application because it serves no use.
Potential is there
Dan Iwao 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Doesn't crash when open but needs to get serious about having more coupons available from a wider group of restaurants to retail stores.
Lchindri
Lchindri 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice thought but only finish line showed up. Once more stores join then it'll be great but until then just a waste
Maybe later
ThisBellaVita 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
One store in Washington state. Is Finish Line the only store onboard?
Only one store.
OutdoorLover 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The screenshots show a bunch of stores including Target, but the only coupon in my area (15 mile radius) is for Finish Line. I live in a medium sized city and there is a Target 2 miles from my house. What gives?
One store...generic coupon?
detzX 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm an open person but why launch an app that has one store in most areas. I did a search for all the places I travel to and Finish line is the only store that came up. Lame. I hope stores jump on but it was a bad idea to launch early because a lot of people are going to delete this app once they realize there are no decent deals. I have it two stars because the name is catchy and "Matt Parkman" is a co-owner.
Great app
rcgiphone 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great use of iphone give them time add stores An stores need work with app maker be. On it
Major Potential.
rivalsounds 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not much in the NY area yet, but Yowza needs time to grow...there's major potential for a killer app here.
Location services

I'd like to be able to input a zip code. I have location services off to conserve battery.
Has potential
Catul 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great idea, now just need lots of major retailers to hop on board - coming soon, I'm sure.
No-zah!! Not yet anyway
Joe in Los Angeles 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Too many of the places (& there weren't many) that it found offered no discounts. They were just ads. Sorry. If Yowza! Wants to be taken seriously by the coupon community, EVERY losing needs to be a specialized discount. It's the equivelent of getting a 20% coupon to Bed Bath & Beyond inside the Entertainment book. Why?
Good idea, launched prematurely - plus a technical glitch.
Ramatsu 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Same comment as other here have - I only show two locations for a single store (Finish Line - is this their only participating store so far?) - so hopefully there will be a LOT more, which will be needed to make this useful at all.
Get. Coupons for sf and sonoma county
Cdiz185 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great idea but right there is not much on it right now. And Alls I get our codes I haven't found 1 coupon with a barcode
Game changer?
Texterinexcelcis 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Simply a fantastic idea. Now all you need are some good old-fashioned sales reps to get enough merchants on-board.
Great potential
jpcaridi 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This has the potential to be an everyday use app. The interface looks nice and is easy to use. But with only one store near me in the NY area it's a little dissapointing. Let's get some more merchants to sign up!!
A lot of potential
HLHeavyD 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just saw this on geekbrief.tv. What a great idea and has a lot of potential. I only see on store in my search and I'm in the middle of phoenix. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely great, except for no content
Automatk 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm sure this app is brand new and still getting content on board, but I live in NYC and there is not a single piece of content yet. Come on... Don't roll out an app that offers nothing in the greatest commercial capital on earth!
Great Idea
MBJustice 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Saw this on GeekBrief.tv great idea. Would love for more local businesses to join.
Yawow
Nockname 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app will grow to be great
Awesome app to have
pd_denver 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app's concept is straight-up genius. When I first got yowza last week, it had 3 nearby locations - one of them I saved $10 at. To date I've saved nearly $70 and the people in the stores are always like "oh let me see that" when I show them the coupons. I checked today and there are more than 50 places in the system including a few mom&pop stores, golf courses, lotsa stuff. I wish the search -especially the zip code search- was a little more optimized for performance; it takes awhile for search results to load, and it gives the appearance that there were no results.
WOWZA!!
GamerN&D 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
How incredible is this! Works like a charm!
Fantastic app with lots of potential
Jordanburnette 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can see where things like Yowza!! are going to take off running. It has fantastic marketing (Greg Grunberg from Heroes is a co-creator) and the interface is stellar. The only thing everyone including myself if waiting for are more merchants. I personally do not shop much but with having an application like this with me everywhere I may find an awesome deal at a store I normally wouldn't shop in. Yowza!! FTW!!
It's revolutionary!!
ph0t0g1rl 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Before I found out about this app I talked to my mom about using a coupon I got in an email on my iPod as is. I said I thought that would be so cool to use a coupon without clipping paper. Save the trees and the moolah! Yay! It's so ingenious! With enough time every company will sign up with yowza and clipping coupons will be a thing of the past. The future is here with this app people! Download it. It's FREE!
More stores asap!!
Arminhammer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Interface is amazing. I know you guys are new but there really needs to be more content. Says a lot for the functionality that I'm keeping this even though it's incomplete. Good work guys!!
Could not use the coupon
nshah_78 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
My first time using this coupon and it did not work. I went to a local Pier 1 Imports store, bought some stuff and the total came above $30. Yowza showed me a coupon of $10 off of $30 or more purchase for this store. When I showed the coupon to cashier, they did not accept it at all. I am not sure how Yowza gets these coupons or of they work individually with these stores on discount coupons but I wasn't happy with this. I tried to explain to the store supervisor but they did not accept the coupon at all. It was a waste of my time, their time and probably other people's time who downloaded this app and relying on the coupons this app provides. How does Yowza!!! plan to correct these things?
4.5 stars rounded up
Juggalox13 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Pro: Free, great customer service resonse, easy to use, & easy to explain. Con: Currently limited coupons, limited search radius, & hard to bring up to store owners/managers. A few local store owners said they would look into working with Yowza! in the future. The search radius could be slightly larger, to show those who don't live in the cities or those who live in larger cities the deals before leaving home. Consumers should attempt to talk with store managers or owners about Yowaz! to help spread the savings. You could also bring up the growing number of iPhone/iPod touch users & that it'd be very eco-friendly to use Yowza! by using paperless coupons.
LOVE THIS APP - Use it everyday...
FreeLancer561 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
It does exactly what it says it does, SAVES ME MONEY. And it's free. I love the new features in Version 2.0. Love Tweeting my savings to my friends. I also love checking for new stores and I have even encouraged my local favorites to list deals with Yowza!! Thanks for such an easy app and one that has just about paid for my iPhone in savings.
Awesome!
TechnoDude101 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
This app is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Great app but not yet fully devloped!
AppleGeek 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
There are very few cupons available and is really only useful if you leave in a major city (NYC, LA, Chicago, etc.)
Looks good. I wish I could use it.
Teunis27 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
I gave this 3 stars because I like the idea and I think it has potential. Unfortunately, there are 0 stores/deals listed in my area (Minneapolis). It was free so I don't feel cheated but I'll uninstall it so I have the space on my phone. One thing that bothers me: The age/gender questions used to provide "better" and "more relevant" deals. I would rather have an option to view all deals and preferences that let me filter out those I'm not interested in. I don't want the app deciding for me what I won't be interested in.
Maybe useful if you live on a coast...
Elezar 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
I'm not sure what the use is of having the ability to search or add favorite stores in the new version. I only get 4 stores that show up at the largest radius. And two of those don't even offer coupons, just "deals" that they have all the time, like financing deals. After lsiyening to them talk about all the national companies they were in talks with, I'm really disappointed that 6? Months later, still nothing. Maybe if you're in LA or NYC, you'll get a decent selection of stores. Otherwise, the app really doesn't really do anything useful...
Great idea, not worth the mb of space taken up on my iPhone
KJESPOKO 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I have had this app for several months and have waited a long time to use it. Finally the day came where I could use it at Sports Authority. (1 of the only stores to offer a coupon) I got my item to purchase (A The North Face backpack), walked up to check out and pulled out my iPhone, the checker had never received such a coupon, so she tried typing in the code. Sure enough I couldn't even use the coupon with the item I was purchasing. There was a restriction on the coupon, which isn't Yowza's fault except that they put a coupon that had major restrictions on the app. It was rather embarrassing to pull out my iPhone thinking I would save $10 bucks, but to my surprise had to walk away $10 poorer. I then noticed a letter that stated that most major brand items did not work with any coupon. It makes no sense when most major brand items are what people want to save money on. Why put useless coupons on your app? I have now taken the app off my phone and will never try this again until I hear that there are actually good deals that work. I highly recommend you not waist your time or the 1.2 mb of space on your iPhone.
Excellent
Geome 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
I saw on guitarcenter.com that thy added discounts with yowza. Was going buy a bunch of audio equipmnt and it saved me 50 bucks. Awesome app if you visit guitar center.
Great Idea, needs some changes.
Veraxus 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
This is similar to another iPhone app, Cellfire. Both apps have one major problem, though - they don't include a way to hold the listed companies accountable for not accepting coupons. What these apps need is a built-in listing for each listed company's customer service numbers, or even an automated form, to allow users to report specific stores that aren't accepting the coupons. In Yowza's defense, they do list an email address for reporting this in the FAQ on their website, but it really needs to be built right into the app.
