So now that we're rolling into December, we're about to enter into the biggest season of the year for both app buying and app sales. Right before Christmas, Apple will "freeze" the App Store, which means listings won't get updated, and developers won't be able to change prices or release new apps, so iOS devs and publishers are working overtime right now to make sure everything is ready for the holiday. To that end, here's a few tools to help you find deals as quickly as possible. As always, we'll be reporting on as many deals as we can here on TUAW, and for up-to-the-moment discounts, you can also follow our Twitter account at @TUAW. But there are other ways to find big app price drops. EA has made it easy for its apps -- the company has put together a "Daily Deals" page that will highlight free and discounted apps Read More

When I originally played the outstanding game Osmos [$2.99/HD], the unhurried gameplay and soothing music lulled me into a calmer state.  People have made similar comments about the relaxing effects of Zenbound 2 [$2.99] and Spirits [$2.99/HD]. It's been a while since another game had this effect on me, but Wisp: Eira's Tale [$2.99/Lite] by Triolith Entertainment seems to exert a calming influence. There's no timer or score, just a little glowing fairy (wisp) named Eira who's lost in the forest and needs your help to return home. The controls are tilt-and-touch. Tilting your device moves Eira left or right. Tapping and holding the screen causes her to float upwards. Using these controls, you can search each level to discover three blue crystals and an exit portal. This is one of those games where you're constantly doing little taps and tilt adjustments to tweak your character's floating direction and speed. And there's nasty things to avoid. Apparently, an Read More

iPad Only App $2.99 Our Review By Kevin Stout on May 4th, 2011 Rating: :: PLEASANT Great music and slow-paced gameplay in this meditative game. Developer: Price: $2.99 Version Reviewed: 2.2.1 Device Reviewed On: iPad Graphics / Sound Rating: Game Controls Rating: Gameplay Rating: Replay Value Rating: Overall Rating: When I saw the first iteration of this game, I scanned through the pictures and reviews and wondered why it was so popular. It’s just wrapping a rope around various wooden sculptures, right? That’s what I decided, and so I never got around to playing it. When Zen Bound 2 was released and I decided to discover what was going on. My first reaction of the game wasn’t far off; it really does consist of wrapping a rope around various wooden objects. But I found out that it’s impossible to judge the gameplay experience of these apps just by their pictures. So Read More
iPad 2: Taking Advantage of the Gyroscope
Calendar16 Tue, 22 Mar 2011 03:40:32 UTC +00:00
posted by D. St. Charles on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 8:40 pm.   Much ado was made about the addition of a gyroscope at the Apple keynote release of the iPad 2. Apple asserts that the integration of the gyroscope, compass and accelerometer will improve games, maps and other apps significantly. The demonstration app Gyroblox ($2.99, available for the iPhone 4) was used to demonstrate the new hardware. Users who have downloaded the “game” have been disappointed. To better experience the potential power of the gyroscope, gamers may be more interested the suggestions of MacLife, which lists seven games which better take advantage of the hardware new to the iPad 2. However, some of the iPad versions of the games have yet to be updated for the gyroscope. The list includes Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD ($6.99), Jenga HD ($.99), Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus ($6.99, iPod Touch/iPhone 4 version), N.O.V.A. 2 ($6.99 – again Read More

Zen Bound 2 arrives on the Mac via Steam
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Nov 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Zen Bound 2, the second in the series of terrific iPhone and iPad games, is now out on the Mac platform as well, courtesy of Valve's great Steam platform. If you've ever played this one (and you definitely should), you'll know how it works -- wrap a virtual rope around a series of weird shapes trying to cover a certain percentage of the surface with paint. The gameplay's super intuitive and the whole experience is very zen, with solid colors and graphics backing up a great soundtrack and some intriguing realistic physics. The iOS version is universal at $2.99, and the Mac version comes in at just a little bit higher than that at $4.99. But the visuals have been upgraded a bit, and the desktop version will even make use of trackpad controls on the MacBooks and the Magic Trackpad if you want to play that way. Plus, the title Read More

Last week we posted about Secret Exit dropping the price of Zen Bound 2 [$2.99] and submitting an update to add universal compatibility along with all kinds of new visual effects and other tweaks. Zen Bound 2 now uses full OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics on 3rd generation devices and newer which means even better shadows and lighting effects as well as even more detailed paint spread. When playing on the iPad, the random framerate drops have been completely fixed, and the game even performs a little better too. Also, third generation iPod touch and iPhone 3GS users will see incredibly smooth visuals with full anti-aliasing, and Zen Bound 2 looks simply incredible on the Retina Display of the iPhone 4. If you were waiting for any reason, now is an absolutely fantastic time to pick up Zen Bound 2. It is filled with relaxing gameplay supplemented by one of the best Read More
Zen Bound 2 Universal Is Unbound
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Jul 2010 18:56:49 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on July 21st, 2010 Zen Bound 2 Universal brings pretty to your iPhone. Widely regarded as one of the prettiest games with the best tactile controls out there, Zen Bound 2 just received a Universal update which makes it… even better. We just got word from Secret Exit that this Universal update has been approved — it might take a couple hours to show up in the App Store. Zen Bound 2 Universal is an update to the current iPad release that makes it compatible on the iPhone. It supports all devices with OS3.1+ and takes advantage of the graphics capabilities of the iPhone 3G and up. If you are lucky enough to own an iPhone 4, the app gets the full retina display treatment, as well as extra tactile feedback upgrades that take advantage of the gyro sensor in controlling your rope. With the new update, Secret Read More

'Zen Bound 2' Drops to $2.99, Universal Update Submitted
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Jul 2010 17:15:08 UTC +00:00
We just heard form Secret Exit, developers of Zen Bound [$2.99 / Free] and the currently iPad-only Zen Bound 2 [$2.99] that aside from dropping the price of Zen Bound 2 to $2.99, they also just submitted an update to make the iPad game universal. Not only that, but if you're lucky enough to have an iPhone 4, the Zen Bound 2 universal update is coming packed with both Retina Display support as well as utilizing the gyroscope for increased accuracy when moving the rope around. Both Zen Bound games are not games as much as they are experiences, the music pairs wonderfully with the relaxing gameplay of just wrapping a piece of string around a 3D object, and everything down to the in-game menus are simply beautiful. The original Zen Bound actually started as a PC game, but paired with the multi touch interface of the iPhone (and iPad), Zen Read More
While we're all busy fiddling with multitasking and obsessively organizing our apps in to folders, developers are hard at work to fully utilize all the other things under the hood of iOS 4. Firemint and Secret Exit are among the first studios taking advantage of iOS 4's new anti-aliasing capabilities. Anti-aliasing is used to minimize jagged edges found in curved and diagonal lines displayed utilizing the grid of square pixels that make up the displays we use today. Using anti-aliasing, the GPU of the iPhone intelligently decides what color to display on pixels that border the edges of 3D objects to make them blend in to the background and appear more crisp. As you can see from the above image, the A on the left has no aliasing, while the edges of the A on the right have been blended with the background color. This is a gross over-simplification of how Read More
Zen Bound crashed into the iPhone scene in early 2009, and since has developed into a very great game, expanding into more levels, and getting even better. Now, Zen Bound 2 – an iPad exclusive – pounces on to the scene. What’s new? How much more 3D-rific is it? Oh I’ll save you the “horror” and just say Zen Bound 2 straight up EXPLOITS the iPad of its full graphic and animation capacities. If you think the original was epic, this is even better! Recap Zen Bound is a 3D puzzle game, where you tie rope around virtual wooden figures, which paint the figures a colour. Your goal is to paint the figures to AT LEAST 75% in order to pass that level, and you earn another flower for each milestone you break (75%, 85%, and 99%). This game is simple, and placed a central focus upon the sheer graphics rendering Read More

Posted 04/29/2010 at 1:56pm | by Ray Aguilera With 185,000 apps and counting, the App Store is a vast warehouse of digital goodies for your iPhone (and now iPad too). But like most mega-marts, the sheer size of it all makes the good stuff harder to find. We’ve scoured the Store, and found the best apps to help you use your iPhone to it’s fullest potential. Whether it’s games you seek, or productivity tools, we’ve got you covered. As it turns out, there really is an app for that, no matter what that is. The iPhone and iPod touch brought back fun to videogaming, with developers focussing on innovation, affordability, and novelty. Touchscreen and accelerometer controls also force designers to think different, resulting in games that are a glorious collision of classic and cutting-edge gameplay and technology. --Craig Grannell Steph Thirion · $2.99 Eliss is the perfect game for the iPhone’s Read More

A must have
ZC tooth 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I absolutely loved the iPhone version. I thought it was magical and a truly unique and beautiful "game". When I found out zen bound 2 was coming to the iPad, it became one of the reasons/justifications for buying one! Secret Exit did not disappoint me in the least with this installment of the zen bound magic. Beautiful game Secret Exit. Thank you!
Stunning
Ithen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Zen Bound 2 is to Zen Bound 1 as Zen Bound 1 was to every other game of it's time: a massive step up in terms of gameplay and graphics. Though it does get a little repetitive at times, thees always another level with another shape or design to mix things up a bit. The Thing that really sold me though was the graphics. I can quite honestly say that these are possibly the best you will see on the iPad for quite some time. I might even go so far as to say that they are on,y a little ways away from rivaling modern computer game graphics. If you are at all hesitant to buy, just do it, you'll be glad you did.
Update: Crashes even after restart / reinstall
BastiRuehl 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
UPDATE ... Thanks to the developer I know now what the problem is: there is a bug when you don't have English as language selected on the iPad. The bug will be fixed and then it will work again. Great job guys!! —————— I'm not the type of person that writes bad reviews because he doesn't have a clou how something works or what needs to be done to run an application. But in this case I'm really disappointed and have no other choice... I've tried everything: reinstall, restart of the iPad - nothing. Everytime I start the game it instantly crashes and it takes me back to my home screen. If anyone has a clou what else there might be to do I'm more than happy to give this game five stars - a friend of mine already got it and it works and it is a great game. I just don't get what the problem is with my iPad? A disappointed zenbound fan
Great game
samtheshepherd 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
ZenBound 2 on the iPad is even more beautiful than it's iPhone counterpart. The frame-rate could be better, but its not bad. Definitely recommend this game.
Relaxing fun
caltabs 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is not some high paced frantic puzzler. Rather, it's a relaxing intuitive game you can take as much time as you want to perfect. Simple enough for anyone to pick up and immediately know what to do, but takes skill to master.
Good game
afrycl 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is a good game: 1. great artwork 2. great music 3. not mindless gaming, you have to think 4. A little pricey but there are 100 levels
Great!
Dis-Cult 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
Incredible graphics, physics are awesome, soundtrack fits perfectly with tone of the game.
Beautiful, but crashes my iPad
phillipsdf 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This app crashed on start, and once I got it going it was beautiful - until it actually crashed the entire iPad. First app I've seen do that. Not cool.
Beautiful game!
Wildor 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
While I wish the framerate could be a tad smoother when rotating the items, this game is just so fabulous and relaxing. It's not about high scores or beating anything. Just relax, and enjoy this one. I loved it on the iPhone and I love it on the iPad even more. Wonderful.
