5 Green Apps We’re Excited About for the iPad
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 15:06:57 UTC +00:00
Easter Sunday was a minor blip over the weekend that will now be remembered as the official launch of the iPad — who cares about Easter egg hunts when there were lines snaking around city blocks, and gadget-fans fiercely giving their early impressions of the device. While there could be a variety of effects of the success of Apple’s iPad on the energy consumption associated with computing (Greenpeace’s and other’s takes here), applications developed for the iPad could also play a role in promoting low-carbon lifestyles like better fuel economy and home energy efficiency. We’d been hoping that some of the iPhone apps developed for next-generation connected cars and home energy efficiency would be available for the iPad launch, but there’s actually very few. The lone official one we’ve seen that touches on home energy is Control4′s, which enables the user to control a thermostat and lighting (as well as audio, Read More

ZipCar turns your iPhone into a virtual keyfob!
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Sep 2009 01:13:34 UTC +00:00
If you live in a major metro like New York City or San Francisco, you’ve probably seen a ZipCar parked in your area. Now that ZipCar’s long-awaited iPhone app is live, you can control those cars straight from your iPhone’s touchscreen! Yes, this is the future, welcome home. We’ve been expecting the ZipCar iPhone app ever since Apple showed off the virtual keyfob application at the iPhone 3GS announcement at WWDC 2009. During the keynote, attendees were shown an iPhone app that could not only reserve cars and pinpoint every available ZipCar on a location-aware map, it allowed the user to honk a particular car’s horn and lock or unlock the doors – all from the iPhone. The integration of the iPhone app into ZipCar’s network of rental cars was so well executed that we half expected the app to launch with some sort of ignition control feature. Alas, you’ll still Read More
First shown at WWDC, the free app can extend reservations, browse available models, and find your car—on a map, or by honking the horn remotely. It's a polished effort, but you still can't forget your Zipcard. Here's why: The RFID-equipped member card is still needed for the ignition system, and to unlock the car at the start of a session. That's a bit of a let down, but I guess it does make sense. Once that first step is out of the way, that's when you can use the iPhone to lock/unlock the car remotely. Zipcar says it's working to add a visual snapshot of car availability (like you get on the Website), greater flexibility in reservation changes, and more detailed instructions to your parking spot. If you have an iPhone (or iPod touch) and use Zipcar, this should probably be a no-brainer to test out. If you do, let us Read More

Zipcar App Finally Hits the iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 28 Sep 2009 22:44:47 UTC +00:00
It was one of the apps shown off at Apple’s WWDC Keynote speech talking about iPhone OS 3.0 back in June of this year, but Zipcar has taken its sweet time making an official appearance in the App Store. The application is finally here (iTunes link), so urbanites who’ve been waiting to make a trip to Costco to load up for the winter, you’re in luck. For those who aren’t familiar with Zipcar, it’s a car-sharing service that allows members to rent a car during the day for running errands, etc. Cars can be picked up from convenient parking lots located throughout the urban areas served by Zipcar and dropped off again in another designated area. Zipcar members pay a monthly subscription fee and hourly and daily rates for use of the car. The Zipcar app was one of those touted as taking advantage of new iPhone OS 3.0 features to Read More

First Look: Zipcar app for iPhone hits the road
Calendar16 Mon, 28 Sep 2009 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
The company's teaser page still says "coming soon," but eagle-eyed reader Jason spotted the free Zipcar app [iTunes link] in the store today. We've been waiting for this app for quite a while, and it's exciting to see it in action. The app provides Zipcar members with a location-based search for nearby Zipcar locations, allowing them to drill down to the individual garages via a map view. Reserving a car is as easy as clicking one big green button, and the app allows you to sort available cars by time, type and model to make it easier to find the one you want. You can see your upcoming reservations and cancel a car if you don't need it after all. Once you get to your car, you can use the virtual keyfob to help find it in the garage by honking the horn (nice touch); while you still need to use Read More

Finally after a whole summer of waiting! I just installed the app and haven't got the chance to test it out but I'm sure it deserves 5 stars! Even though I have my own car Zipcar is great for the emergency or random spradic car needs when I take the subway
Brilliant App for a Brilliant Service
Drew Post 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Zipcar is a great alternative to owning a car. I use my membership in London, NY, and back home in California. It's perfect.
So cool!

Very useful!

Been using zipcar mobile website to book cars for a long time. This app is way better! Using your current location you can view all the available cars around you. Love it. Zipcar is awesome!
Crashes.

Minus Two Stars For Requiring My Zipcard
whenderson 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was going to write up a long detailed 4-star review about this app, because it's clearly fairly well polished and executed and it deserves that. But I won't.
Why do I still have to carry my zipcard bla bla bla... get over it
Mocmylov 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
You still need your zipcard because of the rfid chip in the card. you need to swipe you card so the system knows when you actually got to the car. What if you have a reservation, and fifteen or thirty minutes before, you "accidentally" push the car unlock button? it will unlock your car, and charge you for those extra thirty minutes. And you don't want to carry your zipcard because you only bring your iphone? Last I checked you have to have your license with you too, so what's one extra measly little card? You only need it for the beginning of the reservation anyway, then you can just keep it in your pocket or wallet, where it should be.
A modest start
nsuhor 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Zipcar is a fantastic service. It's extremely thoughtful in execution. I'm in a Zipcar at least once a week in Portland, Ore., and love having cars available in the cities in which I travel to most frequently.
great features, even better than expected!
woohoo3 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
does everything i wanted and then some... i wanted a Zipcar app that would use gps to find the nearest cars, then let you browse them by availability and book them. well, it does all that, plus has some extra features like locating the car by sounding the horn and can do remote lock/unlock, all using the iphone (as long as you've used your zipcard at least once on the car). and it integrates your contacts, to quickly look up addresses. the app's still a bit crashy, but it's just the first release, and it looks like they're already planning updates. overall, very creative and useful (just like the Zipcar service itself).
Nice App, but....
mattinDC 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
What's the point in having the unlock features if you still have to carry your ZipCard? This makes no sense at all. Require a password or something if you must, but c'mon!
Good but missing critical elements
BillRSD 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It was with great excitement that I downloaded this app. Unfortunately there are some quirks I do not like. They don't make the app unusable but feel they should be in a v1 app. 1) Does not find your location. It essentially knew I was in San Francisco but not where I live, which has a Zipcar facility next door. 2) Even though I might need a Zipcar nearby I typically reserve it from near my home. The app does not use the default locations you can setup on their website. 3) Something I love about the full Zipcar site is it let's you see when the car is reserved for. For example, I know there are times when I might need to extend the reservation and want to see availability before picking a car. The iPhone enhanced website never had this so I figured the Zipcar app with all the UI capabilities would have this. Honestly #3 is my biggest gripe but overall am happy to see the app available and hope Zipcar is busy at a v2 app that encompasses the full experience of their full website.
Nice work, Zipcar!
DewSweeper 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
So easy to find my usual Zipcars with the embedded bookmarks. Check out the bookmark link by the search box. That gives you your saved addresses from the website. Allows you also to choose an address from your iPhone contact list, or choose a specific neighborhood. Nice that you can honk the car without scanning your card first. Not a big deal to me that I need to scan once prior to starting my trip. Looking forward to the next version where they say we'll have more options to change the reservation time. Hoping they'll give us account info access too. Overall, I think this is a great app on it's way to becoming a killer app. Thank you, Zipcar!
It just works!
Dayhill 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I just downloaded and used the app to reserve a car for this Wednesday. It worked like a charm!
Why do I still have to use my Zipcard?
runner3293 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been excited about this for months, but I thought the whole point was that people could use their iPhones instead of carrying around a Zipcard. Now I find out I still have to keep up with the card (which I don't want to carry around since I don't use Zipcar every day).
Worth the wait
softlyfocused 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sheesh people, is a little card really all that much of a burden? I was thoroughly impressed by the capabilities of the app, and I think the remote lock/unlock/horn functionalities are great for when you have a car reserved all day and only want to get your card out twice.
Great job guys!
jasonmgilbert 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Excellent app! Works perfectly!
Not Perfect, But Pretty Sweet
WaterConsNYC 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I would strongly recommend following through the tutorial on ZipCar's website to better understand the logic used by the app. It helped me a great deal. One tricky thing, or maybe it's just me, is that rather than not list any cars at a location if there aren't any available at your selected time, the app lists vehicles and says they don't match your criteria. You could mistake that failure to match criteria as failure to match Type or Model but it's just telling you there aren't any available during your selected time period. Once again, the website tutorial is very useful and will also alert you to functions you may not realize are incorporated into the app. If you spend much time on the road, a very valuble tool.
Works Great For Me!
Boston Jazz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have found this app to work great, and am not experiencing any crashes. Sure, there are some features I'd like to see added, but this app is FREE and giving it some real world experience allows ZipCar to learn what features members really need... Rather than loading the app from the get go with things that just aren't necessary. As for tapping the card 1st on a rental before being able to use the iPhone to unlock it, this could very well be a personal safety feature for members. Plus, ZipCar wants everyone to check out the exterior of a vehicle for damages at the start of each rental... if you don't you could be held liable for damages caused by someone else. This app works very well for a first issue for a car share service.
About time
phillyboi5 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been waiting since June, and I'm not disappointed.
please give us our saved locations back!
fo-sheezie! 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
been using mobile zipcar site for a year, and was excited to see the app.
Great Idea. Poor Execution.
Bootlegged 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The first release of this app is a bit clunky and needs refinement. The requirement to use your physical ZipCard first is obnoxious. What's the point of the app then? To lock/unlock the car doors as you're walking towards or away from the car? I guess, but that requires you to 1) Unlock the iPhone 2) Enter Passcode, if enabled 3) Search for App 4) Open App 5) Wait to load 6) Search for the right screen to lock/unlock because it's buried in the app 7) Push the lock or unlock button. AMAZING!! We waited nearly 4 months for this "Easy Button." I'd rather just pull the card out of my pocket when I get to the car and wait a couple seconds for the car to lock/unlock. Loading times on 3G network are too slow for this app to be a convenience. Works great with wi-fi, but who has wi-fi outside in the parking lot of the grocery store? The app also won't automatically detect your GPS location. You have to hit the GPS icon for it to kick-in. At which point the app becomes handy in that it detects with Pins where cars are available near you. But then you have to spend time figuring out how to open up your search criteria and then close that function. Needs to be more clear cut. ZipCar, it's an app. Apps are supposed to be a convenience for the customer. Focus the next iteration on user friendliness and speediness.
Requires Zip Card Still! Minus 2 stars.
Gfw123 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Why on earth do I have to still carry my zip card? That is the whole idea behind this app, a zip card and web site replacement; do it all in the palm of your hand kind of thing. With this release I just have an app that that make funny sounds.
great start, room for enhancement
ZipFanBoy 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
should provide more acct info - credit balances, billing info, etc etc. also should have good interface for reporting common issues pre and post reservation. overall great first stab at the app with plenty of room for future enhancement!
Still need your zipcard to unlock
Bringo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
You still need to lug around your zipcard! That is a major bummer. I was hoping to get rid of one more item that is hogging my wallet.
Not just the need to carry the ZipCard
metaomni 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
... but that doesn't help. I think people would be less irked if the app wasn't introduced as seemingly not requiring you to bring your card around. More than that though, the app is slow and clunky, full of a lot of bugs, and lacks a lot of really important information (billing, ability to change times more, saved locations, quickly accessing current location, etc.)
Delivers Short
cathiet 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
While there was a lot of hype around this application, I feel strongly that it delivered short of expectations. While it is a definite improvement over the web mobile application, there is still considerable room for improvement.
Username? Riiight
DulcetTone 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Why must it ask me to recall my username? Use my phone number, as I don't have my email history to look up a username I've not entered in 2 years
Mobile web version of the site is better than the app.
entspeak 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was so excited to hear about this app when they announced it and, after finally having an opportunity to use this app for the first time, I am quite disappointed.
